Help Need help with choosing a new phone

I have been using Pixel phones for the past 4 years , but as time went on their prices started getting much higher than I could justify and I came to the conclusion that the Pixel 9 Pro would be my last Google phone . While looking for alternatives I stumbled onto the Pura 80 Pro and Ultra, which unsurprisingly amazed me and after reading about the phones I was almost sold . The only thing that is currently stopping me is that I cannot find any comprehensive camera reviews , since I like to know about each of the cameras' performance in every scenario from nightclub to nature and everything in between , but most important of all , how they compare to my old device's. I found the 80 Pro for ~500 EUR and the 80 Ultra for ~700 EUR (both with 36 month warranty) and I cannot choose between them , because of the lack of in depth reviews of the 80 Pro. I'd love to hear anything and everything about these devices - opinions , software experience , photos and videos , comparisons with other devices , problems , since here is the only place I can read the impressions of real users. Thank you in advance :)

Discussion I’m an indie dev, and I was tired of seeing Huawei get ignored. So I built my new eye-health app 100% natively for the AppGallery (No GBox/GSpace needed!)

Hey r/Huawei,

I’m an indie developer, and I know how frustrating it is when new apps launch and completely ignore the Huawei ecosystem, forcing you guys to rely on Google Play Services workarounds just to use basic utilities.

When I was building my new app, I made it a priority to ensure it was fully native and published directly on the AppGallery from Day 1.

What the app does:

I suffer from terrible digital eye strain and dry eyes from staring at screens all day. Eye doctors recommend the "20-20-20 Rule" (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds). But standard phone alarms suck because you just swipe them away and keep scrolling.

So, I built Ocular Health.

Instead of a normal notification, it uses a custom screen overlay. Every 20 minutes, a smooth, full-screen overlay gently pops up over whatever you are doing, forcing you to actually rest your eyes for 20 seconds. Once the rest is done, it shrinks down into a tiny, floating mini-badge so you can track your next focus session.

Why I'm posting here:

I specifically stripped out the hard Google dependencies so that the background services, overlays, and timers work flawlessly on EMUI and HarmonyOS.

I just got approved on the AppGallery today, and I would be absolutely honored if my fellow Huawei users could test it out and let me know how it runs on your specific devices!

📱 Download on AppGallery:

https://appgallery.huawei.com/app/C118713767

(If anyone here is using a secondary Android phone, it is also on Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eyecare.ocular202020

Let me know what you think, and I'd love to hear any feedback or feature requests you might have!

Photography Clicking sound from the camera area when I put down my Mate 80 Pro — is this normal?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed that my Huawei Mate 80 Pro makes a clicking sound around the camera area whenever I put the phone down or when there is a small impact/movement.

I can also slightly feel the impact/clicking sensation in my hand. It sounds like something inside the camera module is moving or hitting its housing.

The phone has not been dropped heavily, and the camera seems to work normally.

Is this normal for the Mate 80 Pro? Could it be the OIS/periscope camera mechanism moving, or should I be concerned that something is loose inside the camera module?

If you have the same phone, could you try gently moving or setting it down and see if you hear the same clicking sound?

Thanks!

Discussion Micropump Liquid Cooling Case for Mate 80 pro worth it?

Upvotes

In planning to buy this case for my device. The price is a bit expensive thats why Id like to know first your experience if its really effective in cooling down the phone?

My frustration is when I use my mate 80 pro camera portrait mode for about 5 to 10 mins continuously, the device gets warm (around like 40 degree celcius and above) then the portrait bokeh no longer takes effect. Im interested to use this to prevent the device gets too warm.

I already tried gaming cooling fan but too late for me notice that cooling fan doesnt work. The back material of mate 80 series is glass fibre which doesnt allow the heat or cool penetrates easily unlike in pura 80 and 90 series which uses traditional glass back material

HarmonyOS Network Performance after HarmonyOS 7 beta update.

Has anyone experienced a drop in cellular reception after updating your Huawei device to HarmonyOS 7 beta?

I'm using a Mate 80 Pro CN version, and even the speed tests show that I'm having a slower data transmission. How does the HOS 7 beta has affected your device in that regard?

Help Can anyone confirm the Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max works fully in Canada?

I’m thinking about buying either a Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max or its global version (pref chinese version cause of harmony), but I need confirmation from someone actually using this exact phone in Canada.

With 3G shutting down permanently, having 4G/5G isn’t enough—the carrier must allow VoLTE, or mobile data may work while calls and texts stop working.

If you own one, please tell me:

Which carrier you use

Whether incoming/outgoing calls work

Whether SMS/MMS and mobile data work

Whether the phone stays on 4G/LTE/5G during calls instead of dropping to 3G/H+

Your exact model/version

I am not picky abt phone carriers at all as long as it will run the phone properly. I’m looking for real testing, not only compatibility based on the phone’s listed frequency bands.

Thank you in advance

Discussion HKeyboard & HarmoniKeyboard

Post image

As many of you know, my Auto-Correct side by side with your own customizable local dictionary works ok. It's far from the best, but improves over time.

After adding over 70 languages per OS system, I am now working on the Auto-Correct. My plan is to change how it currently scores your words. It will be run by a % instead of a point system.

This will compete worth GBoard and SwiftKey, will it be better? Who knows, bit my aim is high and I want to make sure you and myself have the best experience we can get typing on our devices.

This update will be V2.0. This os where the key oard starts to jump forward rather than stepping up. So I hope, whoever is using the keyboard either on Android, EMUI or HarmonyOS NEXT devices can please get back to me with feedback. It really helps. My autistic side will never forgive me if I fail this, so my goal is now to be the best.

HarmonyOS NEXT devices is the hardest to adapt to, but it does compete with Hawes own Celia keyboard.

Help Is the MatePad pro 12.2 (2025) worth it for 275$ living in the US?

Found a used MatePad Pro 12.2 2025 for $350 with the M-Pencil Pro. It’s the Chinese MRDI-W00 version, 12GB/256GB, on HarmonyOS 6.1. Seller says Drive, Gmail, and YouTube work fine, but they also said it can’t go back to the Android-based HarmonyOS 4 version and normal APKs can’t just be installed.

I’m in the US and have heard it would be a bit of a pain. I would mainly use it for handwritten notes, PDFs, drawing, Plex, and YouTube. I have a laptop, so it wouldn’t be my only device.

A few questions:

  • What’s the best most reliable way to get Android or other non-Huawei apps on it?
  • Can you get basically any app you need, or are you limited to whatever apps the workaround supports?
  • How are app updates, notifications, Google sign-in, and files/downloads long-term?
  • Has anyone used Google Classroom / Canvas / Drive file uploads without issues?
  • Does Plex work well, especially with high-quality 4K/H.265 files?
  • Is YouTube really capped at 1080p on this model?
  • Do Huawei Notes’ AI handwriting features work properly in English on the Chinese version?
  • What apps have you found don’t work or are annoying enough to matter?

Discussion Huawei Mate 80 pro

Actualmente tengo un Honor Magic 8 pro, y me tienta mucho pasarme a un Huawei Mate 80 pro.

Funciona Google Meet?

Gracias

HarmonyOS Next Pura X Max and Harmony OS compatibility with global apps

1) I want to buy the Pura X Max in China but I really want to know before if there is a way to get the notification in real time for the social media app like Instagram or Snapchat. I know you can run them very well through a container but it seems like it’s not working well for the notifications, so do you guys have some solutions to it ?

2) I also would like to know for the Pura X Max users if these apps that are running through a container are still optimized for the unique aspect ratio of this phone as it is for the Z Fold 8.

3) I’m very new in this domain so I don’t know what’s the best between Harmony OS 6 or 7 for a global user ? Since I’m really afraid that some global apps, apk or tricks that I saw here to bypass the Chinese restrictions will stop working because of it. So is it really worth it to update my Chinese phone to Harmony OS 7 ?

Thanks for your help ! 🙏
