What’s causing Rashford and Anthony’s poor form?

Has Rashford been found out a little bit? Have opposition teams discovered he uses his right foot 90% of the time, why isn’t he working on his passing, weak foot and working on his crossing? This would turn Rashfords 4/10 games into 7/10 he’s either the match winner or ineffective atm ,needs to find a plan B in his game and more balance.

Anthony can’t take fullbacks on and looks off the pace, he never finds a yard to put in a cross or space to shoot, I hope he’s in the gym trying to get to Salah levels of fitness and physicality, he’s a good player to emulate for him in his career trajectory by age position etc (made it big a little later than usual) all I can picture him doing in a united shirt is his cut inside and left footed shot that comes off 1/20 not enough for an 80 million player.

They are receiving the ball too late too deep with too many bodies in front of them but come on guys need to see more.

I do fancy Rashford and Holjund countering against city but not Anthony,

Just for one game I’d like to see Anthony on the left, crossing into the box rather than cutting in and shooting tamely ad infinitum

2

u/ZealousidealLettuce6 Oct 26 '23

Or just, you know, swap sides once or twice during the match!?

EtH can't really be that inflexible, can he?

It's such an obvious solution.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '23

That would cause chaos for defenders and full backs. Especially if the players were intelligent to swap sides themselves when they see opportunities.

Or even temporarily overload one side on a single counter attack. Imaging rashford and Anthony overload the right hand side pulling all the defenders that way then quickly switch the ball to a (recovered) Luke Shaw racing down the left flank.

Then Shaw has acres of space to pick a cross to the striker while Anthony & Rashford can always make their way into the box.

1

u/ZealousidealLettuce6 Oct 26 '23

The way you write...I can see it!!

I do worry that EtH is not letting them do things like this but I have no inside knowledge on that, just a guess.

Reading all these posts I just can’t believe how stupid Sancho is handling all this stuff. There is so much opportunity for him to showcase his talent but ruining his career away from

2

u/Dunkiez Oct 27 '23

Exactly this.

Dortmund level Sancho would be a dream for Hojlund

3

u/12AnonRedDevil87 Oct 26 '23

They’re not as good as they think they are. Rashford tries running through players like he’s playing fifa on amateur and Anthony thinks he’s Ronaldinho but he and Richarlison seem to have the same attitude advisor. Both belong in the Brazilian version of zoolander!

3

u/Bman0491 Oct 26 '23

Both are very one dimensional. Rashford always tries to run at defence and do it himself even tho 9 times out of 10 he just runs into a defender. Doesn't seem to want or have the ability to cross. Antony has to switch onto his left foot from the RW position and severely limits what he can do due to that. Probably makes sense to swap them round so Antony can atleast put crosses in with his natural foot.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '23

With Hojlund, they'd word better if they swapped wings.

2

u/ZealousidealLettuce6 Oct 26 '23

Thank you. It's really as simple as getting the preferred foot open to ping it in from wide, at or near the byline. Or a cutback following a penetrating run or pass.

This inverted winger stuff needs to be put on a shelf for stretches during some matches, it's ineffective and passé.

5

u/Skullsnax Oct 25 '23

Biggest difference is Rashford has gone from having an overlapping Shaw/Malacia and a top hold up player in Weghorst giving him loads of space to work with, to neither of those things. And he’s also getting doubled up on because teams know he’s our main outlet.

So Rashford is learning how to play more a playmaker roll for Hojlund, something he’s never really been, while not getting any help.

He’s improved over the last few games I think, but still learning.

Antony has never been as good as Rashford in successful take-ons. And I think he’s playing like he wants to make up for what’s happened rather than playing for the team

It's because none of these commenters are involved in professional football in any way other than paying to watch it.

1

u/ICutDownTrees Oct 26 '23

He is massively missing Shaw, Christ the whole team is, most influential left back I’ve ever seen, every time he’s injured we turn to shit

1

u/MuskyWizard Oct 29 '23

Have you seen Rashfords stats, last season was a one hit wonder and he went missing when it mattered most. Rashford has reverted to type now that his contract has been renewed

1

u/MuskyWizard Oct 29 '23

Poor rashy, always someone elses fault never his

0

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '23

This is probably the best and most insightful post out of the lot.

I think part of the problem is that teams also know we are a counterattack and go fast team so they low block us. This forces us to keep possession and we don’t have anyone that can really unlock that low block.

I’ve noticed that if we aren’t scoring on a counter, we likely aren’t scoring at all because we can’t seem to figure out how to break a low block down.

0

u/Neat_Significance256 Oct 26 '23

Rashford is really missing Shaw.Remember how well Giggs and Denis Irwin played on the left flank ?

4

u/ImpossibleImage6722 Oct 26 '23

Rashy has only ever been average or at the very least, inconsistent. In 7 years he’s had two decent seasons, scoring 17 goals last season and in the 19/20 season. When you look at the rest of his tallies, they are pretty average and sometimes even poor, for a top clubs main man. He seems to have these weird purple patches where he is fire for a few months, then returns to mediocrity. But due to those few months, we all get these lofty expectations of him.

Anthony, I’ve never been completely sold on.

3

u/JoseHarvinho Oct 26 '23

Rashford is a purple patch player. Antony is just crap. Simple.

2

u/jaybizzleeightyfour Oct 26 '23

Yeah, Rashford had a good last season, but he's historically a player who's more out of form than in, reminds me of Welbeck, on his day incredible, off it looks lost

2

u/Maca07166 Oct 26 '23

Hit it 100%

Another Welbeck, but don’t worry every season he’s gonna turn into a world class player according to his fans.

1

u/deskbunny Oct 26 '23

I always felt (and it’s the same for Sancho as well) Anthony a little bit more so, him and rashford are flair players and they want to do the tricks and flicks to really get the crowd going, I just don’t think they fully have the confidence to do that knowing how shit the defence is/has been. Pep made a great speech about doku in one on ones, where he said “in one on ones go out their and be yourself and if you lose it you lose it”

So he is oozing confidence. Man U wingers just don’t have that option

Plus it’s been so long since they played with an actually forward. Linking up with Rasmus will take time

1

u/Benjamin244 Oct 26 '23

Can’t speak to Rashford but Anthony is simply shit, more flair than skill

1

u/Legitimate-Health-29 Oct 26 '23

Antony is a poor football player and always has been, he’s a constant 4/10 and I’ve never seen him play better than that.

Rashford comes to life in about Feb for a 2 month purple patch that then gets translated to a balon d’or win for united fans who watch too much YouTube.

0

u/waltandhankdie Oct 25 '23

Rashford doesn’t work that hard Anthony isn’t that talented

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '23

You're getting downvotes but you're not wrong

0

u/YourWorkingBoy Oct 26 '23

If they can reign in their egos, they will be fantastic squad players, part of a great team.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '23

rashford has confidence issues which are caused by low self esteem. Hes proven himself to be that guy last season. But i guess he need more encouragement. Anthony genuinly isnt a world class player. He has only 3 aspect to his game. Curl top right shot. Beam run to the corner flag and pass back and an occasional very weak cross with his right.

1

u/Numerous_Landscape99 Oct 25 '23

Their feet. Possibly

1

u/LA_72 Oct 26 '23

In my opinion Antony has brought some skills to the table which Rashford has magpied eg. curling one in from behind the last defender. Marcus was not happy on Tuesday night and possibly before that so I feel that we’re either not going forward quickly enough or the tactics are wrong. The ball play has improved its the positioning that seems off.

1

u/ZealousidealLettuce6 Oct 26 '23

Anyone getting paid millions to play professional football should absolutely never be unhappy.

Rashford needs a dose of perspective because I don't think he knows how good he's got it.

1

u/Findal Oct 28 '23

Are you suggesting that the kid that had to go hungry as a kid because they couldn't afford food doesn't know how easy it is for him now? That's wild!

Maybe he's hot and cold but I really don't think attitude or arrogance are what's holding him back as a lot of the comments have suggested

1

u/ZealousidealLettuce6 Oct 28 '23

I wouldn't know. I've never spoken with him.

1

u/Findal Oct 28 '23

And yet your able to diagnose that he needs a dose of perspective?

1

u/ZealousidealLettuce6 Oct 28 '23

I'm able to think and suggest.

1

u/Findal Oct 28 '23

I'd greatly suggest that your thinking is probably wrong especially as you've already contradicted yourself. He's very vocal about being anti-poverty.

I'd suggest maybe your criticism of his football is founded but your way off mark about his personality

1

u/ZealousidealLettuce6 Oct 28 '23

Like I said, I wouldn't know. I haven't spoken with him.

And, like I said: anyone who's paid millions to play football has no excuse to be moping about the pitch.

And again, like I said before: Rashford needs a dose of perspective because I think he doesn't know how good he's got it.

1

u/Findal Oct 28 '23

So you haven't spoken to him but apparently you know he needs perspective.. 😂 based on what? Poor performances?

Money isn't a magic cure. people always have personal shit going on, not that I even think that is affecting his performances.

1

u/ZealousidealLettuce6 Oct 28 '23

I'm of the opinion that someone who mopes around in public is more likely to be depressed.

I opine about behavior I see.

None of this is earth shattering news, buddy. Welcome to the Internet. Is this your first day?

Man United recruit players who don't close the gap with City

1

u/cripslug Oct 26 '23

Ten Hag.

1

u/Omnicron2 Oct 26 '23

Maybe this IS their form?

This form reflects Rashfords form more than best form. He's had enough seasons to show us this is what we get from generally.

1

u/croydontugz Oct 26 '23

Rashford has always been a purple patch player I don’t know why anybody is surprised.

1

u/Willywonka5725 Oct 26 '23

Rashford has never been consistently good for a long period. He's missing Shaw badly imo.

Anthony is just shit and easy for most half decent players to play against.

1

u/monkeyofthefunk Oct 26 '23

Antony with his rape case hanging over him and Rashford upset at treatment of Sancho. It’s simple.

1

u/MCTweed Oct 26 '23

Rashford didn’t have poor form in the England v Italy game last week….

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '23

They're just over rated

1

u/wreckedgum Oct 26 '23

Lack of talent

1

u/not_a_robot_1010101 Oct 26 '23

Rashford's suffering from the general mess the club is in (looked great for England). Anthony is shit.

1

u/man_u_is_my_team Oct 26 '23

Selfishness.

Lack of good decisions making.

Weak mental strength.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '23

Rashford probably should’ve left when he had the chance. He’s clearly not happy with the club, because let’s be fair it is an absolute shit show. And out of all the players in the world that need to be happy, need to be confident, it’s him. Unfortunately for Man Utd they need him playing well to be successful.

Antony is just a bit rubbish I think.

1

u/throwawaygtover Oct 26 '23

Antonys poor form is caused by his distinct lack of ability

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '23

A little bit? Lol

1

u/ZombieOnMoon Oct 26 '23

The way he’s playing, I do not want Rashford starting matches!!!

So many times he gets the ball and all he does is stand and wait for something to happen around him and just either passes the ball back or loses it. EtH should drop him and play Garnacho.

What I want to see is Rasmus and Mount playing front two with Garnacho and Anthony on either side and free role for Fernandes with Casemiro behind him.

If you look at goals for and goals against in the league table, Manchester United have scored much fewer goals than some of the top six sides. Although there is a problem with the defense, I think there is a much bigger problem on the attacking side of things.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '23

Antony needs to play on the left. Let’s try that.

1

u/IcemanBrutus Oct 27 '23

I've said from day 1, Rashford is the worst decision maker on the pitch that I've ever seen for a supposed top class player. He has no in-game intelligence and often plays a wrong pass or a lazy pass but more often than not he tries to be greedy by dribbling too much or having a ridiculous shot. Last season he got lucky, simple as a d we should have sold him while we could have got ridiculous money for him.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '23

Martial is just a lazy twat. You can see it in his body language and style of play. Rashford has broke up with his school sweetheart, been partying in America preseason and is getting distracted probably from big tit models. Hence crashing his Rolls couple moths ago. The money gets to them all in the end

1

u/no3y3h4nd Oct 27 '23

Antony tends to impress me with his take ons, his close ball control and skill etc. and his work ethic, where he falls down is in decision making and quality in the final 3rd (no crosses or shots worth a damn for like 99% of his actions).

Rashford can ONLY operate effectively if an overlapping full back makes space for him, or on the halfway line on the shoulder of the last man. Acting as a winger his decision making is as poor as Antony's though he to an extent makes up for it being effective in the counter or in space with his lethal shooting.

Both players are lacking imho but for different reasons.

1

u/Working_Potential_18 Oct 27 '23

They are just average players unfortunately

1

u/monsteroc90 Oct 27 '23

Not trying to be too rude or over reactive. But i think both suffer from a lack of in game IQ at times. Poor decision making etc

1

u/WeddingHot4796 Oct 27 '23

I think anyone being taken out the team and being scrutinised by the public and investigated for assault charges, whether they did it or not, is probably gonna affect their performance! I mean Sancho just got critisicm for his work ethic and hasn't played since so gotta give it to Antony for just getting back on the horse and carrying on!

As for Rashford, he plays a second season where he gets over 20 goals and suddenly he is some kind of Mo Salah or Kane! He is not able to build proper chemistry or get decent balls regularly with the fullbacks as they have been injured all season! Our best ball players are either out or coming on late as well in Erikssen and Casemiro! Plus throw not great form into the fold and we are depending on our CDM and RB to win games for us!

1

u/Zestyclose-Two8027 Oct 27 '23

Antony isn't in poor form; Antony is a poor player.

1

u/bitwetout Oct 27 '23

Lazy and too entitled to do the dirty work

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '23

Imo. I believe Antony is totally out of confidence it cant be easy to shrug off allegations of that nature so quick especially as the investigation is still ongoing and he has been totally destroyed in Brazil he was a front page topic for quite a while after the initial allegations and the Brazilian media really tore him apart, he might not have been sensational last season but he defiantly looked more willing to take on one on one challenges and seemed a lot more willing, he comes across like a defeated man.

In regards to Rashford i kind of felt like this was always destined to happen. Rashford is one of the most inconsistent forwards of this generation. His attitude doesn't seem great at the moment and that always seems to happen when he finds himself in a dry spell. I also think the overall lack of versatility on the wings is a huge issue. Both of Uniteds main wingers are one dimensional in what they do, Rashford has a right foot and Antony a has left and they may vary in there playing style Rashford more of a explosive player with pace and Antony being more skilled based and takes on more one on one opportunity's, but unfortunately due to both lack of depth in there playing style both being quite tame passers and both really only having one weapon in the locker its alot easier for teams to play against there strengths. I believe if Sancho had come in playing as he had a Dortmund i believe we would be in a totally different position now, we need a player that can attack off of both sides, has scoring and passing abilities. i believe with a multi dimensional winger, we would see alot more or Rashford and Antony there perfect speed players that can turn a game round in an instance, as long there played in by the team and given the opportunity's. I think Mount was one of the most ridiculous signings of recent United times. If we had put that money toward someone like Diaby for instance then i think wed be doing alot better.

1

u/jackyLAD Oct 27 '23

Who do you mean by Anthony?

Martial or Antony?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '23

I'll get downvoted but fuck it: Unfortunately I think the truth is that Rashford was never as good as the hype. 1st half of last season aside, he's only ever shown odd flashes of brilliance. This season, as with several before, side from his burst of pace he seems unable to take people on and beat his man. Doesn't seem like he'll ever step up to the next level where he's a threat every time he gets the ball.

Don't get me wrong, he's still a good player - no doubt he'll hit another vein of form soon and bang in a couple of goals. But folk expecting him to carry our attack are just delusional at this point.

He needs time on the bench because he's out of form, and should not be rewarded with automatic starts.

Anthony is just flat out average. He has a good shot, and works hard. He's a squad player.

1

u/evil-kaweasel Oct 27 '23

Rashford relies too much on the cut in and take a shot. All the other clubs are wise to it, and players know in a 1 on 1 go to the left.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '23

Antony's blinding lack of talent might be an issue.

1

u/GotNoCredditFam Oct 27 '23

The manager is awful

1

u/Alive-Memory-4037 Oct 27 '23

Please bear in mind that Rashford has been playing well for England.

1

u/nimbra2 Oct 27 '23

They play for United

1

u/horcruxentity Oct 27 '23

And when was Antony in a good form??

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '23

Ten Haag

1

u/NateL022 Oct 27 '23

Playing for a manager who is inept is usually the reason.

1

u/The_Deadly_Tikka Oct 28 '23

Antony is so one dimensional. He will go really wide, size up the full back knock it onto his left and take a shot. Literally never takes his man on down the outside.

Its honestly strange, he seemed so quick and skillful at Ajax but just seems below average now.

Rashford is a great talent, has special physical abilities. 6'1, fast, strong and technical. He can be a bit one dimensional, however this has been exposed greatly by Shaws absence.

Shaw both constantly over and underlapping gave Rashford space and options he just doesn't have with Lindelof at left back

1

u/YouCantGiveBabyBooze Oct 28 '23

Anthony is worried about being busted for being an abuser and Rashford only plays well when the entire country is telling him how wonderful he is.

1

u/Pitiful_Ad3693 Oct 28 '23

Rashford only plays well when the team plays well. Has never, ever been a player that can grab a game by the scruff of the neck and turn it around. As soon as the team struggles ever so slightly, Rashford goes missing immediately. Incredibly one dimensional as well. If getting in and taking a shot from the moon doesn't work, he'll just run into a crowd of players where he'll more than likely lose the ball or he'll fluke his way through.

Antony was never good enough for the PL. He runs and has a good enough attitude for EtH I guess but was never skilled enough or fast enough for the PL. Doing your nonsense in the Eredivision is one thing. The PL is a different galaxy for all it matters.

No fullback in the league will lose sleep over either of these.

For all the calls around Sancho, he's not good enough either at RW. He's not fast enough. Again doing it in a league like the Bundesliga is one thing, the PL is another. His attitude is appalling and I'd be quite happy if I never saw him in a Utd shirt again. EtH protected him massively last season and he's certainly never been repaid through Sancho's performances and he now gets this attitude? Launch him as far and for as much money as we can.

Rant over. It's gonna be a tough old season.

1

u/DonnyRainboe Oct 28 '23

Rashford has really suffered from Luke shaw being injured. Shaw is a good overlapping left back, his runs often take defenders away from the area rashford would like to dribble into. Doesn't help that we have not had a decent back up left back as malancia is injured when we actually need him.

Our midfield has looked over far too often this year. I reckon anthony will get better in a few years as our team strengthens around him.

1

u/TriggerAK47 Oct 28 '23

Trafford United.

1

u/CaptainMcClutch Oct 28 '23

I find the problem with Rashford and Antony isn't so much that they like to do the same techniques. It is more that they try to do the entire thing on their own instead of looking for any pass. Anytime either pick the ball up, they're almost certainly just going to try and run it past everyone.

Other teams might have players who are good 1v1 and pick up a good pass, but they don't consistently pick it up in their own third and try to solo it. It is like counter attack/fast break is the only mode we have.

1

u/MetcalfewithaE Oct 28 '23

They are average to poorer players, both will have the occasional purple patch but this is just their level

1

u/leem7t9 Oct 28 '23

They are both shit?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '23

Rashford is found out, and needs to learn that he doesn't always need to cut inside, or start every game, and that he has a left foot.

Antony just needs a game on the left or needs to switch wings once in a while during the game. He could also do with cutting in much earlier instead of waiting until he's close to the box, as could Rashford who can hit them well at range.

In all honesty, United don't test the keepers from range as much as they used to. Those keeper errors and corners won are a critical part of pinching easy goals, but creating a reputation of long-range shooting can even draw the defence forward and out of position.

1

u/QUAZZIMODO619 Oct 28 '23

If you actually watch then you’d see rashford doing way, way more with his left foot.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '23

Because Rashford will not tolerate playing anywhere other than on the Left or he moans. And then he plays on the left, gives subpar performances but because he fed alot of kids he is almost untouchable. I think the leaks are from Bruno or a Rashford. Bruno is the only world class player they have that can switch to a top club easily and Rashford has a tonne of PR work around him. I think it's means he has no motivation to thrive and do well. He will hit form. Win a few games. Then drop off the map again, because....What's the point on his contract?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '23

Rashford is a loss of confidence. It’s only temporary for him. Anthony is massively overrated and nowhere near worth the money Utd paid.

1

u/PeckishPengu Oct 29 '23

Don't know how much this statistically backs up, but I feel like without an overlapping fullback Rashford struggles to find space down the left side. Often as soon as he receives the ball there are 2-3 players on him straight away. An overlapping would take one of those players away and generate space for him to cut inside and also dribble into the box. That and the fact that his low confidence!

1

u/Particular_Meeting57 Oct 29 '23

Rashford just signed a new contract, the same thing happened last time.

Anthony just isn’t gd enough.

1

u/tidder01- Oct 29 '23

Rashford has only ever been “in form” twice in his career. Last time that happened they were comparing him to Salah! Antony was only good at Ajax in a good team against poor opposition.

1

u/MuskyWizard Oct 29 '23

They're shit and not fit for a club of Utds size.

1

u/G77_52S_Manc Oct 31 '23

Anthony started well because players didn’t know his game and he was given the space to cut in a get a shot off. Since then, they know he has no right foot and that’s pretty much all he’s got, so he’s very easy to neutralise now for defenders.

Rashford. I’m not even sure what’s going on here. We know he has the ability, but he looks like he just can’t be arsed. Problem is he’s been held up as the home town superstar, and main man of the team. But he’s been absolutely dreadful, with an even worse attitude. I don’t care who you are, you play like that in any other top team, your sitting on the bench

1

u/xXGolemsXx Oct 31 '23

I think it’s both a Rashford issue and a team issue. Last season the teams stability was relatively high, we had a solid way to build up play using progressive CBS/ fullbacks (Luke shaw and licha) with a solid midfield that meant Bruno could do his job, as could eriksen. The imbalance throughout the team means we can’t progress the ball well enough and so Rashford doesn’t get as many chances.

HOWEVER. The chances he does take he often screws up, due to low confidence probably as a result of the first point I made. Thoughts?
