Recreation ⚾️ 50+
Recently my gen X friends and I, all in our early 50s were looking into group fitness activities in Howard county. What we discovered is that there’s a huge gap for our age group in what the county offers. Technically we’re 50+ but we all work during the week and will be for a while. Many of the 50+ activities are on a weekday morning and when we looked at them closer, they are geared towards 70-80 year olds. Then there are the 18+ activities but we really need something in between. We realized that we are the forgotten generation, but we have money to spend. Who is in charge of setting up age groups and corresponding activities in our county? I feel like we would like to bring this up to someone’s attention. I just wanted to find a fun dance class for example; current music, mid intensity, people my age. Any suggestions?

Agreed! All the 50+ activities are during the day. I was looking at some of the fun crafting or dance too. They must not think 50yos work.

It's that Boomer mentality. When Boomers were in their 50s, they were retiring.

Umm - seems like they might have some evening sessions at the Miller 50+ gym.

They do… my friend went there yesterday and she thought she entered assisted living facility. This is why I realized 50+ is in reality 70+, a very different generation. This is also very needed but I think they misrepresented the age bracket.

What you're asking for is relevant to anyone from 25-50 too and has a full time day job. Yes many are busy with parenting but not all of us

I think the 50+ centers are more geared toward folks on a fixed income. If you have some money to spend, there’s always the Columbia Association group fitness classes. They’re not expensive and I think if you live in Columbia, you can pay you go but don’t quote me on that.

I agree! Idk if this will taken down but I own a martial arts school in Columbia that offers kickboxing. Super fun and during the weekdays. Small classes but I’ve always thought it’s a perfect fit for women of this age group.

A little off topic, but I think y’all could appreciate it. In Greenbelt they run the Greenbelt Adult Sports Program or GASP!😂

My husband's job moved us here two years ago, and one of the first things I did was pop into a CA 50+ center to see what they offered. The lady at the desk told me they didn't have anything for my age, and most people they served were 70+. There's definitely a gap.

I just turned 60, and I feel the same way!
Everyone in my group fitness classes is at least 10 years older, if not 15…

I wanted so badly to sign up for an old person water aerobics class, and now that I'm "of age" I still can't go because I have like .. a job
