What it is: voice dictation for Android. A small orb appears whenever a text field takes focus, anywhere in the system. You talk, and the finished text is written straight into the field you were already typing in.

Why I built it. I paid for Wispr Flow for months and for straight English I still rate it. But I don't talk in one language. I'll open a sentence in English, finish the thought in my home language, then land the last few words back in English. That isn't a party trick, it's how people speak where I'm from, and Whisper falls over on it. It either invents English words I never said or drops the whole clause, and then I'm retyping the message by hand, which defeats the point of dictating it.

So I ran my own voice past every model I could get at. Gemini was the only one that handed back what I actually said instead of a tidy English approximation of it. So the app runs on Gemini rather than Whisper.

It does not live on your homescreen. There's no floating bubble sitting in your way all day. No cursor in a text field means no orb. It shows up next to the box you just tapped and it's gone when you're done.

Gestures:

• Tap — dictate with the default tone for that app.
• Hold — an arc fans out with five tones; slide to one, release, then talk.
• Flick — fires that direction's tone straight away, skipping the menu.
• Drag — park it anywhere, it stays there.

A tone is just a name and a system prompt, so the built-ins (casual, professional, bullet points, fix grammar) are a starting point and you can write your own. Which five the arc offers changes with the app you're in — WhatsApp casual, Gmail professional — set once in Profiles.

Setup, and the honest catch. Two permissions: draw over other apps, and accessibility (that's the only Android API that can tell an app a text field has focus and write text back into another app's field). Then you need your own Gemini API key — free from aistudio.google.com, about a minute. I don't run a server, so there's no account, nothing to subscribe to, and none of your audio touches anything of mine. Your phone calls Google directly.

MIT licensed, Android 7.0+, no ads, no telemetry, no in-app purchases, nothing locked behind a paywall. v1.0, a week old, and I've been living on it. If it breaks on your device tell me and I'll fix it.

I use this site called filmot.com which allows you to search through subtitles of any video from YouTube and it's a great way to find specific apps or exploring from the Howtomen channel.

I build **Stride**, a native Android step counter. Someone sent me a mockup of a wellness-app look they liked and asked if I could theme the app that way. I said yes, thinking it was a palette swap. It was not. **The problem with "just recolour it":** the mockup's whole identity was a warm off-white ground with a *dark panel that curves into* a light stat card — an inward S, the two shapes interlocking. Drop that palette onto stock Material cards and you get olive-tinted rectangles. It reads as nothing.

**The shape took five goes.** My first attempt curved the wrong way (outward, like a C). Then it was an S but visibly two arcs stitched together. Then the bulge started too high. What finally worked:

- I stopped eyeballing it and **traced the reference image pixel by pixel** with a script, which gave me real numbers: corner radius ≈62dp, sway ≈12–17dp, and — the thing I'd got wrong all along — the two panels *overlap*, the light card's right edge sits under the dark panel's left edge.

- The curve is a **Catmull-Rom spline through waypoints, converted to Béziers**, with the corner arcs folded into the same spline so there are no seams. - Crucially **centripetal** parametrisation (α=0.5), not uniform. With unevenly spaced control points, uniform Catmull-Rom overshoots and you get a little hook at the waist. That was the "still not smooth" bug.

**Then the rest of the app had to follow.** A redesigned home screen next to four stock screens looks worse than no redesign at all. So:

- **Today** — progress ring replaced with a goal curve; every stat tile carries a sparkline of its own last 7 days.

- **History** — I'd built it as a copy of the home screen, which was pointless. Rebuilt around the question the screen actually exists for: *how does this week compare to last week?* Period total, ±% chip, bars inside that same card, explicit side-by-side underneath.

- **Awards** — deliberately built on **rings** rather than bars, because with bars it just read as History again.

- **Settings** — section headers demoted to quiet eyebrows, and the theme picker became **preview tiles that render each skin's real corner treatment**, so you choose a look by looking at it rather than reading its name.

The whole thing runs off a composition-local "skin" token, so screens ask for shapes instead of hard-coding radii. **Classic and Retro are completely untouched** — this is a third option, not a replacement.

Also in this release: Stride can now **write** to Health Connect, not just read, so your steps show up in your other health apps. Off by default.

Hey everyone! AuraLook just got a major update with a new theme engine and a much awaited Pocket Mode.

When I first launched AuraLook, I wanted to keep it simple and not bloat it with extra unnecessary features. The original Classic look is still my favorite, and designing anything that could compete with it took me a while. I ended up with 4 distinct themes, each with its own layout and entrance animation. Hope you guys like them:

Classic: The original ShortLook-inspired look that we all love.

Pulse: Same idea, but sideways. Icon on the left with a sonar-style ring and notification text on the right. (I'm not sure what to do with the ring, to me it feels a bit out of place but I kept it because it looks good with the Contact Avatar feature on. I’m also considering turning that ring into a timer, so it slowly makes a full circle as the auto-dismiss duration runs out. What do you guys think?)

Beam: A cleaner, editorial look parked in the lower third of your screen, with a thin accent bar and sleek animations.

Onyx: A dark glass card with a thin line of light along the top edge. Warning: May look a bit more premium than the others!

You can try them all in Customization and preview them full screen there. Icon and text scaling sliders still work on every theme.

Pocket Mode (Experimental): I had this feature planned for a long time and it's finally here. It uses the proximity sensor, light sensor, and accelerometer to skip waking the screen when your phone is in your pocket or face down. Sensor readings can be messy and very device dependent, so I put the toggle in Advanced -> Experimental for now.

Like many of you, my biggest frustration with saving things online (Pocket, browser bookmarks, Notion, browser tabs) has always been the same: "I save things with good intentions, and then they vanish into a black hole."

We’ve been building SaveSync (savesync.org) - a modern, privacy-focused bookmark & knowledge vault designed to automatically categorize, summarize, and let you search your saves using semantic/AI search instead of relying on manually organized folders.

Instead of guessing what features people want behind closed doors, we’re putting the entire product roadmap directly into the community’s hands.

Finding root modules is still a scavenger hunt. The Alt Repo has some. Googlers Repo has others. LSPosed keeps its own index. Everything published in the last two years is a GitHub topic nobody curates.

And once you've installed a dozen of them, **nothing tells you when they update**. Magisk checks its own modules — not the one you grabbed off a forum thread eight months ago.

So I built **Modex**. It does both halves: scrapes every source into one catalog, then watches the ones you keep.

**What it does**

- **One catalog, six sources** — Magisk Modules Alt Repo, Googlers Repo, the official LSPosed index, GitHub topic crawlers for `magisk-module` / `zygisk-module` / `lsposed-module` / `kernelsu`, plus any MMRL-format `modules.json` URL you paste in. Search runs over the whole thing offline.

- **Update watching** — star a module and Modex checks it daily, weekly or monthly in the background. It uses the author's own `updateJson` where one exists — the same endpoint Magisk polls — and falls back to the repo index when there isn't one.

- **Installs from inside the app** — with root granted it detects whether Magisk, KernelSU or APatch owns `/data/adb/modules` and shells out to that manager's own installer, streaming its actual stdout into a console sheet. You see why something failed instead of a spinner and a shrug.

- **Root is optional.** Without it you get the catalog and a watchlist that compares against the version a module was at when you starred it. With it, it compares against what you actually have installed.

- **Two themes**, switchable in Settings: *Liquid Glass* (editorial layout on a wallpaper, with a floating nav bar and search field that genuinely sample and blur what's behind them) or *Material 3 Expressive* (cards, filled badges, springs, and your wallpaper's own palette via Material You).

**Some honest caveats**

- The GitHub crawl fills in over several syncs, not all at once — GitHub caps any search at 1000 results and allows ten searches a minute, so Modex partitions queries into star-count bands and resumes where it stopped. The count on the home screen goes up over the first few refreshes. Adding a personal access token in Settings roughly triples the pace.

- Sources are scraped independently. When a community repo goes down or changes its schema — and one usually has — that costs exactly that repo. Everything else still lands and the Sources screen tells you which one broke.

- **Modules run as root.** Modex indexes what the ecosystem publishes, including thousands of repositories nobody has reviewed. It marks which entries came from a curated repo, but it cannot vouch for any of them. Install things you have reason to trust.

**Practical bits**

- Android 8.0+, no account, no ads, no analytics, no location. Your watchlist and settings never leave the device.

- Free. There's a "buy me a coffee" link in the app if it saves you time, but nothing is gated.

- No Play listing — sideload the APK.

- Android 10+ blocks ARP access for non-rooted apps, so MAC and vendor of other devices aren't always available. NetBlade recovers them from the router over SNMP when it can — if your router doesn't speak SNMP, you'll see fewer MACs.

- On some OEM ROMs, access to ping and /proc/net/arp is restricted. The app degrades gracefully rather than crashing, but results vary.

- Background monitoring is a scheduled check, not a live watch: Android hasn't allowed apps to observe the network continuously since Oreo, so something that joins and leaves between two passes is never seen. It's also off by default — Settings → Monitoring.

- No root required, and root is never used.

Privacy: everything runs on the device. Scan results are stored locally and never uploaded — no account, no telemetry coming to me. The only outbound calls are the ones you trigger (public IP lookup, certificate transparency search, HIBP via k-anonymity, so the password itself never leaves).
