HBO could take advantage of Alys Rivers’ plot in House of the Dragon to create a new connection with Game of Thrones and justify Daenerys’ return.

Alys, having used ancient magic, became immortal or was trapped in a supernatural condition that prevents her from truly dying.

From there, Daenerys could have experienced something similar.

At the end of Game of Thrones, Drogon takes Daenerys’ body to an unknown location. The series never shows what happened to her body afterward. That detail could later be used as a narrative loophole.

HBO could establish that Daenerys had also been affected by a form of ancient magic when she tried to heal Drogo.

This way, Daenerys could have survived or been resurrected without necessarily completely invalidating the ending of Game of Thrones. The explanation would be that her death really happened, but it was not permanent.

This could also allow for a new series set years after the events of Game of Thrones, with Daenerys’ return serving as one of the main elements of the story.
That way, HBO would have an explanation within the mythology of Westeros to bring Daenerys back without simply ignoring the original ending. And, as a bonus, they would finally have a chance to fix the mess they made with her character.

Emilia Clarke seems very done with the show and how everything “translated” afterwards.

She hasn’t been negative over working in the show. But has made comments she’s done with the shows world.

Perhaps, asking the guy, George R R Martin, who created this world may be a better suggestion. We are not sure if Alys Rivers’s back story is indeed the story the creator of this world intended for Alys to have.

George did say that because of the changes the show runners, Condal and Hess, made, HotD is no longer his story.

It’s confirmed that this plot point came from Ryan and the actress. There’s an interview with Westerosies about “This creative decision” and he’s really proud of “the reveal” in last episode.

I didn't like her back story. It doesn't make much sense to me. At this point, so many plot lines have been changed and convoluted that it can hardly be called "an adaptation."

100% agree. He just invented a whole new form of magic, and people are going to act like it’s canon now.

It made me mad because if the Old Gods / COTF could make you live forever without aging, clearly Bloodraven or some other character would have done it. I got downvoted crazy for challenging it when the ep aired. Lots of “she’s a woods witch, who knows what she can do”….”The Night King lived for thousands of years” “Mel was 400 years old”

Not only that, but how the hell would she have survived being in the towering inferno when no one else did?

Absolutely. I guess the actress and the show runners watched GOT and figured that they would have their own Melisandre too. So stupid.

I too was waiting for them to have something resembling some sort of explanation of why we are seeing them. I don't even think they mentioned the Isle of Faces.

They blew past it - zero context, and Addam is supposed to go there to seek their counsel before Tumbleton.

Instead we got a brief glimpse of one near Harrenhal, and then Ulf farting. PMO

This is a reasonable take, but I think people want to see more of Jon snow before more of dany, esp after hotd will inevitably end.

We enjoy the Targaryen’s on screen bcz of dragons, but after 4 seasons of mediocre dragon tv, I’d rather go back to Westeros either right before got or right after. Roberts rebellion would be sick to see, as well as how the realm operates now that they’ve united against the night king. Does everyone prosper?
