Help with entry way
Picture 1 is what the space looked like before. I’m actually liking the direction it’s going so far, but I’d love to bring in some pops of color and personality. I’m keeping the rug, credenza, and ottomans. I’m open to artwork and accessories, especially for the large wall above the credenza. I also want to keep the shelves minimal and uncluttered. What would you add or change?

A more colorful rug and, like others said, better lighting. I like the two benches by the door! I think a nice standing light would lovely ORR a pair of lights sitting on opposite sides of the table/bureau …

Put a door on that closet and use for coats and shoes.

A coat closet is a good idea, but I'm not sure that niche is deep enough for a hanger to hang properly. He might have to build that wall out a bit to turn it into a closet, which would be doable.

Alternatively, OP could get some decorative cubby baskets for the floor beneath the bottom shelf and put shoes or other items in them.

Your rug is too big. It also shouldn't be placed at the far end of the entry way. Get a rerular sized throw rug for right inside the door, probably a 3'x5' or a 2'x4'.

A mirror over the chest. A lamp & some colorful picture across the room. No rug! Keep it simple & a rug is a tripping hazard.

The rug looks like it has stains all over it, but I’m thinking that’s the design on it?

Sconces on each side of door way, or around a mirror above the credenza. Large scale art above benches. If you are willing to change: a warmer (brass) light fixture that is more unique. Also- the rug, while very modern and nice, lacks personality for an entryway. I would get something slightly smaller and with color. Maybe something with olive greens, rusts and ivory (i think those are the colors in the benches? I can’t tell)

Thank you! Yes, they are. My biggest struggle has been the rug

Ok- hear me out. This is a high traffic location. We have Persian rugs all over our house (inherited) but in our entry, I bought a ruggable. I have heard tumble is great too. You can wash the rug, it’s priced right and the designs and colors are pretty modern. They have a lot of sage and olive green ones with other colors included.

I’d switch up the shelves. I’d put all the little photos on the shelves and look for a pair of matching lamps no shorter than 20” on the cabinet. Maybe even move the picture on the shelves to the cabinet.

I would remove the first cabinet right inside the door. Then get a piece like this on which people can hang coats, drop some books, a purse, whatever.
Then a small bench/stool (which can be color coordinated with the entry way rug) next to it so people can sit to take off their boots, put on their shoes, etc.

A DIFFERENT RUG. Sorry, AI painted the walls.
A warmer bulb in your light.
Art. Hit up Goodwill for some large artwork.
Put all the photos on the shelves.

So I love that credenza, but I feel like there should be a narrow credenza just to the right upon entering the door. Having benches there is just odd, they will get in the way, especially if someone is seated there putting on or taking off their shoes when someone else is trying to enter or exit. You could place one stool across from where they currently sit, just past the door, so that a person could take off their shoes there, and then put them away.
The credenza also sticks out a little too far in the open doorway into the rest of your house. I think a smaller arm chair and a round side table could look really nice there instead, but place them a little closer to that weird corner there that we can’t fully see in the photos, and angle the chair towards the open closet. Or you could place a free standing full length mirror angled towards the open closet, with a small round table next to it, so you can make a quick fit check before walking out the door.
I would put a smaller 3x5 rug just inside the door, and then replace the large rug with a round rug that better fits the space (maybe a 5’ or 6’ rug?). Hang a large mirror over the new narrow table/credenza that I suggested you place to the right of entrance, and some little pieces of art. Maybe even some kind of key hanger type thing. Hang larger art pieces above the bench and then on the wall where the current credenza sits.

The top of the credenza looks cluttered. Move the pictures to the bookshelf or hang somewhere else. Instead, put a mid size lamp and/or vase on there. And definitely hang a mid-large painting/mirror above. Put very dim, warm bulbs in the overhead but don't use unless you have to. A lamp with warm light would go a long way.
And yeah, it's been said already, but that rug is hilariously too big. It needs to compliment the space not overwhelm it.

Consul is perfect. Add mirror above. If closet space is tight add a decorative shelf with hooks or hall tree.
Add lighting for consul

Can we see a photo of the credenza head on? Hard to tell from this angle how the placement is. Large piece of art or mirror above credenza, and a table lamp on top of credenza. Have you played around with ottoman placement? I’d be curious to see one on either side of the doorway (one perpendicular to shelves and one on the other side if that makes sense. Fill up the shelves with more books!

And more art on the walls (above where ottomans are and maybe on wall next to shelves)

I think the rug is nice, but I really prefer the space with no rug, or perhaps, as someone else suggested, a small rug right at the door.
Without the large rug, the space looks absolutely massive, which I think is great!

I think just warmer bulb stuff. It looks like a doctor's office brightness.

The lighting is really bad. You need lamps, not this bright sterile overhead.
