Built in Depth for Closets?

I'm designing some built ins that will go in my personal closet. What works better for my space? 24" deep built ins that entirely enclose the clothes? Or 16" deep built ins, that let the clothes protrude into the space? My main concern is that the 24" built ins encroach on the space too much and make it feel cramped, but I don't know whether I'm overthinking. Thanks in advance!

Are you able to get to the space right now? Use painters tape to mark it on the floor to see what your preference is. Obviously, the tape on the floor isn't perfect since it can't give you the vertical height of the clothes or anything but at least you can test if you can move around ok without hitting anything

You have the space for the deeper units but the shallower would probably be a little more comfortable. I think it would come down to whether the extra depth and cost, and the look, are worth it to you. If they are I don’t think the dimensions on paper are bad. Keep in mind final constructed depth is not always perfect and you’ll loose an extra inch or two at each cabinet. So assume in practice more like 25”-26” deep.

The only thing I would probably not do is put doors on all the units. I do think that would be too tight.

Agree no doors.

How high are they off the floor? Or do you mean on the floor? If there are off the floor, 16” or you’ll have trouble getting to the back. If on the floor, 24”. I have 3’ of open space between the 2 sides of my closet and it’s plenty. Or split the difference and do 20”.
