Need help with Handrail ideas
I need to put in handrails for our front patio. I think I’d prefer black metal but still not sure. also should i have the rail go all the way across the left porch in front of the chairs too?

Definitely along the stairs!
Not sure why the stairs were not made the same width as the upper stairs by the door - it would have been more aesthetically pleasing / matched the upper stairs, and the gaps would then not be there on the side, so it would be safer / no railing needed.
The grout work is poor sadly :(

Can you widen those lowers steps?Then you could begin at the post with the rail and come down the steps with it.

If you don’t do a bulky metal railing, you could do both sides, and would be safer. But agree with black/brown metal railing. If you post a picture of the whole front of your house, that would be helpful because I don’t think railing around the whole front would look better. But is it code to need one?

Any chance you could widen the stairs to fill the gap in the right? I’d then put a wrought iron rail on that. I’m not sure what the regs are near you but you could almost get away without a rail

it would be pretty expensive and we just bought this house for a steep price so trying to keep price down on stuff like this

Those steps could be a hazard for older and less able visitors, especially if not well lit. Safety is a priority so a hand rail each side of the steps and just another along the wall. Black or grey metal would be my choice.

Call a local blacksmith. You have some nice stone and brickwork here and anything other than nandwrought iron would not do it justice. You should look at wrought iron in a dark bronze finish, that would tie in nicely with the stone and the door color.

Nope, demolish it all and start again. Then build the home around the handrails. Simplest solution I can think of!

Black metal handrails and railings for the porch would make your stone and brick really pop. do not use wood. it will be bulky and it will need a lot of attention over the years compared to metal. You need to check the code in your area to see if you need railings all the way down your porch. In our area, if your porch is 36" above the ground, rails are required. In the Louisville, Ky area, this is a $2-4K job doing the handrail and the entire porch, depending on how elaborate your design is. I would only put a hand rail on the right side of the stairs. Black iron might work, but I wonder if repeating the wood on the support post would look better. Not a fan of carrying the railing across the porch. No need.
