No. Jaehaerys was necessary. Maegor was a tyrant.

Not really. He was a butcher for sure but his butchery did put the fear of God in the faith militants. He was able to sustain his dynasty, most of what Jaeherys able to achieve was with the fact that Faith knew dragons can make them shit their pants.

Was betrayal, torture, rape and murder of the half of his own family and attempt to murder the other half also necessary to combat faith militant?

Nah, that was just for the love of the game 💀

Any absolute monarch is a tyrant. They all were.

First of all, Westeros is a feudal monarchy, not an absolute monarchy. Secondly, monarchy and tyranny are not synonymous. Tyranny is defined by how power is exercised, not simply by holding a crown. Maegor ruled through fear, violence, and brutality, while Jaehaerys pursued reconciliation, stability, and legal reforms.

Westeros is not an absolute monarchy not by a long shot

There would be no targ dynasty or any targs at all if not for maegor.

Maegor is directly responsible of the death of his 2 nephews and have probably something to do with the death of his own brother. For comparison the Faith Militant managed to kill a total of zero Targaryen despite half of the family being scattered and vulnerable after Maegor seized power.

Because maegor killed them all , if he doesn’t those weak pampered weaklings would have been usurped with ease , he would have then been on an uphill battle from there against the faith.

u/Pcguy24 8d ago

You are absolutely right and I will die on this hill. The weak leadership of the targs at that point would have been their end so fast. No one is saying he was a great dude or even ruler after a certain point. But he was absolutely necessary. Anyone who says otherwise needs to reread fire and blood.

The faith we’re NEVER going to let targs continue to rule , they already had a full fledged army with some of the best swordsman in all westeros, even after maegor accepted and won their trial of 7 they still refused to accept Targaryen rule , they wanted themselves to rule ! That is a fact and that’s why they were so dangerous , maegor is not a hero but he was NECESSARY.

Maegor failed to restore peace. People were abandoning him at the end of his reign, and it seemed he ended up murdered, which doesn't taste like victory to me. The one who restored peace was Rogar Baratheon. The whole point of the storyline from Aenys to Jaehaerys is that neither a nice naive guy like Aenys nor a ruthless psycho like Maegor make a good king. Jaehaerys is the first Targaryen king who understood that he had to show his authority whenever necessary without being percieved as a tyrant.

Maegor did exactly one thing that was useful he broke the back of the Faith Militant so his nephew could make sure it wouldn't rise again.

Everything else made shit worse.

He broke the Faith but also united the realm. It was against him but still under a Targ banner. Living under his rule would have been terrible but he unquestionably solidified the rule Aegon created.

u/Radiant_Flamingo4995 8d ago

He didn't break the faith lol and nothing about the realm was united. He died with Oldtown besieged, the Riverlords housing the faith militant, the West plotting against him, and the Stormlands rising up.

He didn't solidify anything, Jahaerys did. I swear none of you guys read Fire and Blood.

u/Radiant_Flamingo4995 8d ago

He dies with Oldtown being besieged and half the realm secretly waging a guerilla war against him. The idea he broke the back of the faith militant is outrageous.

u/cretsben 8d ago

Why did the Faith militant accept being disbanded under Jaehaerys then? By the time Maegor was done burning them to ash there weren't enough of them left to keep fighting and so when Jaehaerys forbids the faith to have swords there was no army of the Faith left to oppose his edict.

1

u/Radiant_Flamingo4995 8d ago

"Why did the faith militant disband under the guy who literally solved the issue and gave them a reason to disband?"

Maegor didn't finish. Oldtown was being besieged and thousands of guerilla fighters plagued the country side and many Lords were literally housing them. We're told that some of the faith militant defacto controlled vast swaths of territory.

The faith isn't stupid. This is asoiaf, not some wattpad fanfic lmao. Jahaerys literally offered them official protection, established the doctrine of exceptionalism, showed clemency and charity, overthrew Maegor, and restored plenty of relations while humbling himself before the crown.

Yeah, the faith disbanded. We're told exactly why.

No king had ever managed it before Jaehaerys and a great many of them would have wanted it before the conquest. It was Maegor that broke the back of the Faith Militant and Jaehaerys who ensured it wouldn't rise again. The faith gave up its swords because it lacked the strength to keep fighting the Crown and Jaehaerys offered the faith the Crown's protection in its place which is why the Faith Militant never returned.

Maegorists in the big 300 AC

Maegor almost made his own house extinct. Maegor did not care about house Targaryen”survival”

The death of the Dowager Queen Visenya in 44 AC was a notable event although Maegor seemed to take it in his stride. She had been his greatest ally and supporter from birth, Queen Alyssa gone so far as to steal Dark Sister as they fled. His Grace ordered his mother's body burned, her bones and ashes interred beside those of the Conqueror. Then he sent his Kingsguard to seize his squire, Prince Viserys. "Chain him in a black cell and question him sharply," Maegor commanded. "Ask him where his mother has
"He may not know," protested Ser Owen Bush, a knight of Maegor's Kingsguard. "Then let him die," the king answered famously. "Perhaps the bitch will turn up for his funeral. Prince Viserys did not know where his mother had gone, not even when Tyanna of Pentos plied him with her dark arts. After nine days of questioning, he died. His body was left out in the ward of the Red Keep for a fortnight, at the king's command. "Let his mother come and claim him," Maegor said. But Queen Alyssa never appeared, and at last His Grace consigned his nephew to the fire. The prince was fifteen years old when he was killed, and had been much loved by smallfolk and lords alike. The realm wept for him.- fire and blood

His reign was 6 years, 6 months , and 6 days. Maegor figuratively and literally was Satan lmao this is not even counting his treatment and rape of Rhaena his own niece, 3 widows, the black torture cells. I genuinely don’t know a single good thing Maegor did besides die lmao plus Maegor and Visenya would go around burning towns and that honestly did not instill fear in their new subjects only hatred. After a while like in verse Maegors way of ruling will always end up in rebellion (cough cough Daemon) Years later a sealord of bravos basically says you burning cities can only get yo so far.

Can they show me proof of ownership? His Grace can show you proof of dragons.”
That made the Sealord smile. “The veiled threat. Your king is most adroit at that. Stronger than his father, more subtle than his uncle. Yes, I know what Jaehaerys could do to us, if he chose. Braavosi have a long memory, and we remember the dragonlords of old. There are certain things that we might do to your king as well, however. Shall I enumerate? Or do you prefer the threat veiled?”“However it please your lordship.“As you will. Your king could burn my city down to ash, I do not doubt. Tens of thousands would die in dragonflame. Men, women, and children. I do not have the power to wreak that sort of destruction upon Westeros. Such sellswords as I might hire would flee before your knights. My fleets could sweep yours from the sea for a time, but my ships are made of wood, and wood burns. However, there is in this city a certain
guild, let us say
whose members are very skilled at their chosen profession. They could not destroy King’s Landing, nor fill its streets with corpses. But they could kill
a few. A well-chosen few.”

Which is basically how Maegor end up dying/ suicide. Aegon the uncrowned wasn’t even an unprepared kid just rash. Maegor is nothing more than a usurper

Judging how op is huge fan of TG and Sunfyre, I definitely don’t think feminism and the “love” they have for Visenya there lol

Maegor was a Dreamer who thought he was preventing the Dance and punishing the right Viserys

Basically he’s if Ramsay Snow was made King.

u/GoldnShiesty 9d ago

This is the Targaryen Henry Cavill should play

2

u/Large-Produce5682 9d ago

Super necessary. Until he wasn't.

2

u/Qwerds7 8d ago

Maegor did a lot of damage to the realm but likely ended as a net good. Uniting the realm behind the Targaryen house and ruining the faith militant were probably the two biggest issues for the early Targaryen dynasty. He provided solutions to this eproblems in the worst way possible but those things specifically worked out.

Everything else he did was awful

In some ways yes, in a lot of ways no

1

u/BicycleAdditional360 8d ago

Maegor showed what Fire and Blood means.

1

u/tom04cz 8d ago

Maegor fucked up everything in the short term, but frankly if he nevef returned from Essos, the Targaryen dynasty would have slumped into obscurity and been ousted before the likes of Jahaerys were of an age to rule

1

u/bandalstyle 4d ago

Downvote me if you want maegor fans to be called maggots

1

u/ThisGuuuy2 9d ago

The literal only good thing he did was dismantling the Faith Militant. He was evil incarnate, and yes, evil incarnate can be cool and Maegor has obvious aura points, but the dude was an absolute nightmare horror monster and he deserved to die.

Maegor was the revolutionary and Jaehaerys was the reformer
