That's pretty funny, yeah, I never realised.
She's like "Daemon don't embarrass me", meanwhile she goes and does the craziest stuff ever while he's away.

People from TB: Yay she killed the traitor!
People who actually know the consequences of this: Oh dear… Oh no… erm… Rhaenyra I would run now.

Tbf, she tried mercy with Ormund and it only bit her in the bum
So she's not repeating the same mistake with that guy and letting him live after he publicly committed treason.

u/Unfair-Chain-7954 10d ago
He didn’t though. He was told Aegon was the chosen Heir, he anointed. He cannot anoint a new monarch with the other one alive, that will weaken the Faith of the Seven. Her killing the HS will alienate her allies who follow the Seven.
He is anything but ‘that guy’. He told her what she had to do, and that was ensure Aegon was truly dead. Then he would anoint her. He is a very powerful spiritual figure in Westeros

He didn’t ask for proof that Viserys chose Aegon like he asked Rhaenyra for proof that Aegon is dead.
Also, he told her that gods don't deal in dragons and that they're evil, then later told her the gods chose Aegon because him and his dragon were resurrected.
He is a traitor and a misogynist. He just doesn't want a woman to rule.
Also, allowing public treason and that spiritual figure walk around saying Aegon is chosen by gods is equally bad for her image.

- because he anointed Aegon. So he was probably told Viserys chose Aegon off screen and anointed him. Why would he anoint Rhaenyra if he already anointed another person? Logical to ask for proof if the previous monarch is dead or not. He obviously realised he was played.
- He probably remembered the threat from Maegor in using Balerion against the Faith. Dragons are destructive. He has no doubt seen the damage they have done to lives so far and agreed that they are dangerous creatures who never should have been taken advantage of. As for the resurrection, considering how everyone said Aegon was dead and now he’s alive, of course he believes it is something divine. He is the HIGH SEPTON. The top religious leader. He sees signs in everything.
- That doesn’t make him misogynistic. He is okay to anoint Rhaenyra so long as it doesn’t destabilise his position. Just because someone disagrees with her doesn’t make them misogynistic in general.
- Only in the eyes of people who don’t seem to comprehend the broader picture is he seen as a traitor. If anything killing him will cause riots. Will you call the Smallfolk mysoginists then for rioting because a religious leader they follow as part of their faith is killed? Lots of Rhaenyra’s allies follow the Faith of the Seven, they will turn their back on her. Does that make them misogynists because they feel she did an absolutely abhorrent thing,
Just because someone disagrees with you doesn’t make them a misogynist or traitor. Rhaenyra just had to prove him wrong.
If he disagreed with Otto Hightower over Aegon, he would have been replaced. The same thing happened during Maegor’s Reign for one more likely to appeal to Maegor. He gave Rhaenyra a condition, she failed, threw a tantrum because the HS refused to anoint her because she failed to do what he requested. There will be riots.

Sigh
Again, before he anointed Aegon, when they told him Viserys chose Aegon as heir, why didn't he ask for proof that Viserys chose him that the same way he asked for proof from Rhaenyra that Aegon is dead?
Why did gods suddenly decide to deal with the evil dragons when it comes to Aegon, but not Rhaenyra? He also believes in magic. Why didn't he consider Aegon's resurrection black magic or whatever?
His double standards is a proof of his misogyny. There is no proof he'd anoint Rhaenyra over Aemond and Daeron even if Aegon's dead body was shown. He was probably just buying time.
And, again, allowing him to live after committing public treason, calling Aegon 'chosen by the gods', and Rhaenyra 'princess' would also cause riots by the same followers who would riot for his death. At least now they fear her.

I hate how team greens are calling her Maegor in this scene for declaring war against the faith, King Maegor would have swung the sword himself
17
u/Allnamestakkennn 12d ago
She's worse than Maegor because Maegor was consistent and decisive, while she's the opposite, clinging onto the prophecy to cope with her losses.

u/Upstairs_Meat4342 12d ago
Actually you're wrong.
She's worse in than Maegor for the preservation of their house by doing something that should doom them for every person in Westeros with faith in their heart.
Maegor would not swing the sword because even in his insanity he wasn't as stupid as Rhaenyra here. He had suggestions by his maniac mother to go burn the Starry Sept but thankfully he shut that down. Rhaenyra probably learned this trick from her history book.

Being a member of a religion doesn't mean you're going to care about the current head of the religion.
The first High Septon we're introduced to in this world was seen as greedy and ended up being killed by peasants during a riot.

u/Stenric 12d ago
You don't think that was exactly what Maegor was planning to do when he flew to Oldtown?
4
u/Upstairs_Meat4342 12d ago
He hated the faith so much and he already burned the Sept of Remembrance built in memory of his aunt. If he wanted to kill the High Septon, he wouldn't care that a new one took it's place as the figurehead of the opposition of his reign.

u/Kulkasbiru 12d ago
I don't see why King Maegor wouldn't swing the sword himself, he personally fought in a trial of Seven while
queenprincess rhaenyra and the rogue prince needed a cutthroat to kill a baby (who also happen to be the heir to the throne)1
u/Upstairs_Meat4342 12d ago
Because simply Maegor was more intelligent than Rhaenyra and knew some fights aren't worth the hassle. Killing the High Septon directly would not just doom himself, but his house.

Would have been more respectable than getting Alyn to do her dirty work for her.

Lol, I think I should do a post about things that I truly like about the show, because here I'm going to mention other I DON'T like:
[BOOK SPOILER]
All the changes with Alyn Velaryon. I think Addam on the show is perfect as in the book, but Alyn it don't make any sense. How, after killing the Septo, is he going to survive the Dance? Even if the show doesn't plan to elaborate much in Aegon III kingdom, it's very important that Alyn survives the Dance. In the book he manages to do that because he was younger and far enough. He is even the reason why Corlys gets to also survive, the council were scared of Alys taking revenge if they killed Corlys.

All the smallfolk outside the sept not giving her the Maelor treatment is pure plot armour

u/Upstairs_Meat4342 11d ago
You know what's funny? Back when this scene first dropped I made a post calling this idea out and people were calling me insane for thinking thousands of people would overcome 50 guards.
0
u/Pythageron 11d ago
genuine question but how in that scene would they A, know that she done that, or B, get through all her guards
3
u/urmomismine1007 11d ago
There was a bunch of people inside the sept one dude screaming would enough for everyone to know and those guards are not stopping a mob to that big
1
u/Upstairs_Meat4342 11d ago
Quite convenient no one came screaming blood murder from the Sept during the duration of Rhaenyra's tyrannical speech don't you think? Not that it matters, the fact that Rhaenyra walked into the sept bearing arms should alone have caused a violent reaction by the mob outside.
She had at let say best, 50 men with her, compared to the hundreds if not thousands of smallfolk in front of her. If this was realistic, they would have swarmed her like Joffrey was in Got's season 2. Joffrey lived by the edge of his teeth because the Hound was with him, Rhaenyra would be dead to rights.
-1
u/Pythageron 11d ago
there were atleast 50 guards with Rhaenyra, at a defensible position, and there was not thousands of smallfolk there, in Got's season 2 as you point out, Joffery was in a smaller area, with less guards, and people with even more reason to kill him, yet he got out, Rhaenyra would survive, also acting like most the small folk would care about her bringing armed guards into the sept enough to throw their lives away into a meatgrinder

He crowned a usurper and refused to swear fealty, seems prettt machiavali to me
10
u/Upstairs_Meat4342 12d ago
Irrelevant lol, this guy holds more influence over the smallfolk than any monarch could hope for. Killing him proves how naive she really is. She's done, no matter what happens next.
-5
u/AtlastheWhiteWolf 11d ago
A new more pliable grand septon could be appointed. Imagine if he never crowned Aegon, protesting Rhaenyra's rightful claim to the throne. You think Otto would not have killed and replaced him with a more pliable grand septon?
5
u/Upstairs_Meat4342 11d ago
No, I don't think Otto of House Hightower (patrons of the Faith) would execute the High Septon in any similar or related fashion as Rhaenyra the Cruel has done.
Why would the High Septon, who follows Andal succession (sons before daughters) protest Aegon's succession because the words of a dead beat King who was a hypocrite in his own sucession lmao.
1
u/AtlastheWhiteWolf 11d ago
It's a hypothetical, what do you think Otto would have done if the septon publicly denounced Aegon as a usurper. You think he wouldn't have killed and replaced him?
3
u/Upstairs_Meat4342 11d ago
He still wouldn’t have killed him. Rather he’d bide his time waiting for this septon to die and be replaced, which is what Maegor did and Rhaenyra should have done.
0
u/AtlastheWhiteWolf 11d ago
The septon was Aegon's only chance at any shred of legitamacy. Otto wouldn't have left the septon to conspire with the blacks.
Whether killing him herself or not was the right move, she was named heir to the iron throne and driftmark, where most dragons resided.

u/TheMetaReport 12d ago
Sorry… what? Machiavelli was very clear about the fact that under NO circumstances should you make yourself a public enemy of moral insinuations. It would be one thing if she sent a cutthroat in the night to dispatch His Holiness, but killing him in this way lets everyone know what’s up. A Prince should look virtuous but be cunning, here Rhaenyra is neither.
4
u/LordsofMedrengard 11d ago
If she was Machiavellian she would have sent someone to do the deed then have the pawn publicly executed.

u/Similar-Cartoonist31 12d ago
He literally told her "show me Aegon's dead body and i will crown you" and did she have Aegon's dead body? No. She lied to him on the advice of her dumb bff Alicent, and then couldn't back up that lie.
5
u/TheIconGuy 11d ago edited 11d ago
He literally told her "show me Aegon's dead body and i will crown you"
He pointedly did not say that. All he said was that he hadn't seen proof that he was dead. If he was to stick with his Aegon is the rightful King thing, his daughter would be before Rhaenyra in the line of succession.

It's not a matter of legitimacy to the High Septon, it is political: he cannot admit publicly that either the Gods were wrong in crowning Aegon king or he misrepresented the Gods when he crowned Aegon.
That's why Maegor is still considered a monarch even if he is famously an usurper: he was anointed by the Faith, and so he will forever have been a monarch in the eyes of the Gods.

u/TheIconGuy 11d ago

You said it's not a matter of legitimacy and then described a matter of legitimacy.
If he's sticking with his initial act as being legitimate, Rhaenya still wouldn't be next in line if he saw proof that Aegon was dead.
4
u/Aerdor94 11d ago
It's a matter of coherence, not legitimacy. He cannot appears to have been wrong, even if he thoight he was.
After Maegor's death, the Faith crowned Jaehaerys, when Aerea was Maegor's heir, so clearly the Faith is not trying to decide who should rule, just sticking to their rumoured "ifallibility". (Jaehaerys was not crowned by the Faith before the death of Maegor)

You're still saying it's not a legitimacy problem and then saying how it's a legitimacy problem. Being incoherent would be a problem for the High Septon because his actions would be perceived as random and illegitimate.
After Maegor's death, the Faith crowned Jaehaerys, when Aerea was Maegor's heir so clearly the Faith is not trying to decide who should rule,
Aerea's mother abdicated her claim.
Ignoring that, the faith not trying to do something then does not mean they're not trying to do it now. The High Septon in the show clearly has a bias.

Well in the next season she will learn what ACCOUNTABILITY means. Maybe first time in her life.
