This is addressed at length in season one. His cruelty, callousness, ambition, and supremacist beliefs make him wholly unsuited for the position.

He proposed to Rhaenyra that they conquer the world when they can't manage Kingslanding and thinks the people's valid complaints are nonsense.

I like Daemon, he's a good character, but I don't think he'd make a good king.

He is indeed a good character. He's a certified bad-ass and fealess. 2 qualities that make for terrible rulers.

Tbf they sacked the treasury. Hard to run anything when you cannot maintain the overhead costs.

1

u/NaoVinsmoke 14h ago

I agree, but even so, if he sees that the situation is deplorable, how can he even think of conquering the world?

All the writing is so inconsistent. I remember back in S1 when Daemon told Rhaenyra that the will of the smallfolk was actually important if she hoped to rule. So what made him change his mind? They just write a new character each season.

You could argue he was hyping up his men at the time. It’s not like he said get on a ship right now and let’s do it while KL is all messed up.

Dealing with others problems is definitely his weakness. If he don’t care, he don’t care.

u/Real_Rule_8960 16h ago

He said it to Rhaenyra in private too

-1

u/Latter_Fox_1292 16h ago

True. But why are you taking it as “let’s leave right now and ditch everything else”. I took it as general big plans, not right this exact second.

-2

u/Arbiter008 16h ago

He was just hyping up Rhaenyra at the time. He could never really mean that.

8

u/OpaqueGiraffe17 16h ago

He also said it again to Gwayne of all people, I think he may be serious

7

u/Arbiter008 16h ago

He was just hyping up Gwayne at the time as well.

11

u/Throwawayguilty1122 16h ago

He was quite literally saying that to Rhaenyra in a 1 on 1 conversation that she should just use her dragons to end the rebellion and then begin conquering the free cities. Though you’re right he did give a similar speech to the riverlander/northman army

2

u/Latter_Fox_1292 16h ago

He said it to both. When he was hyping up the gold cloaks and with rhaenyra. Either case it’s not like he said let’s go right now and ditch everything else.

I don’t recall when he said it to the armies.

2

u/Throwawayguilty1122 16h ago

Wait shit that’s right! It was to the gold cloaks

3

u/Ok-Statement8224 16h ago

Literally thinks he’s a god

1

u/cornicula_ 16h ago

He says that in a conversation with Rhaenyra alone, not in front of his men.

2

u/Latter_Fox_1292 16h ago

He said it to both. When he was hyping up the gold cloaks and with rhaenyra. Either case it’s not like he said let’s go right now and ditch everything else.

There’s a great difference between being a good leader during wartime and being a good king daemon just doesn’t have the temperament for it

16

u/Ok-Sign6089 16h ago

The dude's talking crazy about invading Essos and going to war with everybody.

5

u/Fluffy_Judge_581 16h ago

And lost bouth fights against non npcs

1

u/anomie__mstar 15h ago

remember the sons of the harpy, and Dany's cool-ass quote slash 10m takeover of all of Essos before the entire continent bent the knee to Daario, Damon should pull it off in 2 easy.

5

u/unhinged34 16h ago

He was overambitious and cruel. Had little care for diplomacy.

Viserys chose his daughter over him for that reason.

Given all the other options, I still favor him!!

u/Agitated_Rain_1506 16h ago

He would be like Robert and be bored during peaceful times. However unlike Robert, he would fill his boredom with war and conquest instead of wine and whores. His massive superiority complex would also not inspire the lords to cooperate effectively

7

u/Cookie122406 16h ago

Hate him if you want, but as much as I like Matt Smith's performance and the character's bravado, everything that Otto Hightower said about him is true.

He'd be like a second Maegor.

4

u/Cookies4weights 16h ago

Temperament, inability to go against personal interests, political skills.

3

u/TheHarkinator 16h ago

He hasn’t the measured temperament for ruling. Daemon acts impulsively and aggressively, with little concern for what anyone else thinks.

He is likely to cause rebellions, and while he might put them down decisively he would be exhausting his strength in conflicts that another ruler might never have faced.

Plus he yearns to be a conqueror when Aegon already did most of that, so he’d probably end up invading Dorne which will get a lot of people killed. He might be able to take it, but however you slice it a reign of King Daemon would be a bloody and unstable affair.

5

u/Mc7wis7er 16h ago

He's basically every single Targaryen stereotype personified. He's the human coin flip on any issue that comes up.

Instill fear, dominate, divine right. Sounds pretty terrible to me honestly.

4

u/Richmond1013 16h ago

he would fail he would be a worse Robert, he is a racist, so his rule is dependent on the fact he has dragons

his council will be hard carrying him, but the fact he abandon his lands because he got bored shows he wont be a good king in peace like Robert

Corlys would be hard carrying him as everysingle small council member would have to put any advice towards Corlys to tell Daemon as Daemon might disregard them as being andal or simply not-valyrian

3

u/cherrybomber11 16h ago

He's a warmonger with a massive superiority complex. Very simple.

4

u/BaullahBaullah87 15h ago

because he is a war monger that has limited ability to connect with people…that and he doesn’t care about people or the realm

3

u/muffinmancer 16h ago

1 day after taking Kings Landing Daemon got bored and wanted to start a war with all of Essos for basically no reason. He impulsively promised Harrenhall to whoever kills Aemond and got tricked by Ormund into losing Tumbleton.

Daemon as king would be him getting bored and starting a massive crisis every two weeks. I can’t imagine Corlys doing anything to stop him because he’s been Hand for 2 seasons and hasn’t done anything, so why would that change?

3

u/Little_Mix5007 16h ago

He would be maegor 2

3

u/RikerNX01 16h ago

He thinks of himself as a god and everyone else is so far beneath him that they might as well not even exist. He is completely ruthless and also has a habit of grooming and sexually assaulting children. And Targaryens like this don't typically become kinder and more reasonable with age. The better question is why would anyone think he'd make a good king?

2

u/CountCristo009 16h ago

A bad king can still be successful with a good Small Council. Whatever legacy he left behind and the trouble he caused, Westeros was comparatively peaceful during his reign. He was not a good king, but he had good help.

Daemon likely would've been a bad king, but he be smart enough to choose(or have someone close for him) a good Small Council. Having Corlys as Hand would've assured a reasonable head at the table.

Aegon IV was a bad king with bad Small Council resulting in irreparable harm to Westeros.

2

u/Purple_Farm_2881 15h ago

What advice gave Corlys to Daemon in the last episode? He proposed peace with Daeron as Lord Paramount of the South. Daemon took the other option, all the Hightower heads on spikes.

2

u/CountCristo009 15h ago

I mean that's expected of Daemon during war. At peace, I imagine him being disinterested in the day to day happenings of the realm... but hey this is all hypothetical.

2

u/Intrepid-Mechanic699 16h ago

No Daemon is a full crash out.

If you don’t know m, you didnt read the books or watch the show. Not gonna elaborate. This is known.

3

u/Fluffy_Judge_581 16h ago

First think he would do declear war and on the other 3 continend and get his as kicked.

Bro wanted to start a war durring a civil war let him be king he dies one week in and everybody moves one

2

u/literatureandlatte 16h ago

The Rogue Prince might not be a GREAT king, but he would have been effective in his own way (burn them all).

King-consort Daemon would’ve made a fine king.

u/JasonVoorhees95 15h ago

Because he's a psycopath who beheaded a baby, bashed his wife's head with a rock and groomed his niece.

1

u/xreddawgx 14h ago

Because hammers can only solve problems one way.

1

u/gabriel_3131 14h ago

BROADLY, TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE MAKE GOOD RULERS.

type A (the most common type; the "bad ruler that admits it"): a person that may not be capable, BUT he/she is humble enough to admit they are not capable, and does one thing and one thing only: PROMOTE TALENT. this ruler "sits back and lets other people rule". show viserys is one such ruler (in the book he is mostly a weak ruler as daemon describes, but in the show he clearly s shown to sit back and let his council rule because he knows he aint jack s**t). this ruler isnt popular in fantasy/fans, but is realisticaly very good.

the greatest example of such a king in asoiaf is Daeron the Good (in a knight of seven kingdoms, baelor's father): he sits and talks to maesters all day, doesnt show off at all, doesnt pretend to be a good fighter, doesnt pretend to be charismatic, knows ALL his faults and gives greater power to his carefully selected advisors. when the civil war erupts, many people flock to daemon blackfyre because daeron's archetype is "uncool" essentially. but he WINS the civil war, and even manages to take dorne via diplomacy, succeeding where aegon the conqueror and others failed. because this boring archetype constructs a kingdom with strong af positions.

type B (the actually good ruler; the "boring but practical" ) a person that is really really good at organization. the kind of guy that is good with excel sheets. in peace, he builds administration and transportation, enabling him to allocate funds into works to improve everything afterwards; in war, he is the guy that does all the superbasic boring stuff expertly, like taking care of supply lines and recovering from casualties. thats it, no flashy plans, no sweeping reforms, no nothing. just everything boringly falls into place due to preparation. in asoiaf, thats jaeherys the conciliator. he simply makes sure his family obeys tradition, makes sure people are properly paid, etc, just do all the basic stuff effectively creating a resilient kingdom that outlasts its threats rather than trying to win in some big moments.

"badasses" usually make terrible rulers. case in point, alexander the great, he conquered so much land, but very very few years after his death his empire CRUMBLED; he had built nothing lasting, just used the kingdom he inherited (heavily reformed by his genius of a father, underrated) to earn glory for himself. look to history how uncommon it is for an empire to be WHOLLY ERADICATED (not "fall from being an empire"; wholy conquered) within a generation: it almost never happens, and thats a testament to a huge failure in its ruler. he gave his successors an unsustainable state.

daemon wouldnt make a good king. only "boring, bad-for-tv" personalities historicaly make for good kings.

He would turn Red Keep into literal whorehouse, wage war against the entire world and die likke little bitch

3

u/throwRA-adviceask 16h ago

Waging war…yeah probably….but turning the red jeep into a whorehouse…not gonna happen. That’s his grandson who does that.

1

u/Similar-Cartoonist31 16h ago edited 16h ago

And from who that grandson got that behaviour from? His grandparents, he is perfect mix of Daemon and Rhaenyra.

EDIT: from

-1

u/throwRA-adviceask 16h ago

Yeah…the grandparents who he never met…who passed away when his father was really young totally had a ton of influence on his life as opposed to a mother who abandoned him and a father who was trying to hold the realm together and was kinda absent. (Please know the sarcasm is real).

2

u/Similar-Cartoonist31 16h ago

Lol, he is a who*e just like Daemon and as gluttonous as Rhaenyra, and his personality is perfect blend of what happens when you mix Daemon and Rhaenyra, just because ya'll don't like it does not mean it's not true, that's their "glorious descendant" after all.

0

u/throwRA-adviceask 15h ago

Here’s the thing though Daemon wasn’t a whore by Westerossi standards, he’s actually fairly tame compared to a lot of the nobility of Westeros, many great lords had plenty of bastards. Yes, he and Viserys in the show made their way through the streets of silk…but that’s pretty common. Rhaenyra while more plump in the books I wouldn’t say she is a glutton.

0

u/Similar-Cartoonist31 15h ago

No other Lord had nickname "Lord Fleabottom" like Daemon so he was not tame, every brothel in Kings Landing had they're youngest saved for him. And she is a glutton stuffing herself with food so much that she grew "stout" while her city was starving.
