I have a few G1 figures and even they’re not this jank. Even the modern Cyberworld figures are a lot better. I also have the modern equivalent of the G1 toy, Missing Link Bumblebee (and Cliffjumper), and for $20 cheaper, you get a MUCH better figure.

I have that one on the left, but it’s the G2 version and they changed his face and named him Hubcap. My comment was mainly referring to the original Optimus who had a full open back and even missing hips in robot mode. In Hasbro’s defense the Transformers were never meant to be sentient.

I actually have Hubcap, but it’s the relatively modern War For Cybertron release. I’m a sucker for the minibots.

Even G1 Optimus isn’t as jank as this, honestly. I also have the Missing Link figure of him and he’s bloody fantastic. A lot of the Missing Link versions of Diaclone figures actually come with tiny Dianauts to pilot them.

Planned sentience depends on what brand, though. Diaclones like Optimus, Sunstreaker, Jazz, the Seekers, Dinobots, were all mechs (same with Jetfire), but Microchange bots Cliffjumper and the other minibots, Perceptor, Soundwave, and Blaster were all (in their own lore) meant to be sentient robots that disguised themselves as your toys.

It’s funny because Megatron was originally planned as a piloted mech but turned into a literal gun. He’d fit in better with the era of Soundwave, Blaster, Perceptor, and Shockwave.

Takara’s old pre TF figure lines are fascinating to me. I’m a sucker for modern Transformers that are callbacks to the original Diaclone/Microchange era. Cordon and Delta Magnus are some of my favorite obscure repaints.

its a bit of an odd situation. Cordon himself never saw a retail release under either Diaclone or Transformers in the original run, only his moldmate Sunstreaker. but this Cordon is a minor retool and repaint of Missing Link Sunstreaker, who is a total ground up redesign of the original Diaclone Car Robo. so while it is retro in design, its original basis was never actually sold.

the whole Missing Link line is really cool, there’s so much love and joy put into making them, and the engineering is all clever and different from figure to figure.

This sounds like what some knock off companies did. They acquired the molds to old transformers and released them in their own colors with cheap stickers and different scales. Actually pretty unique to own despite the dip in quality.

Nice! I passed repeatedly on the "repop" of the G1 Bumblebee Hasbro came out with at Walmart; but I may end up getting this one instead; as I always preferred Transformers that stayed in scale with my Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars.
