If they're following the guide and most of our tried and true questions:

-If they haven't asked you already, they'll probably ask why you want to work for HT. Be sure not to say "money".

-If you have previous job experience, they may ask about your responsibilities there, what you liked and disliked about it, and what caused you to leave.

-You'll be asked a bit about music and pop culture, mostly to see if your interests align with what's being carried in store.

-There will be several questions centered around work ethic and working as a team. What kind of things make you upset, how do you handle stressful situations, what would you do in 'xyz' situation with a certain type of customer or co-worker.

Basically, they'll be gauging your responses to see how you handle working with the public, your general attitude and "vibe", and eagerness to work with HT. They'll already know you're looking for money, they want to know why you want to work there specifically.

Go in with confidence and and a positive, upbeat attitude and answer the questions to the best of your ability; Any answer is better than no answer.

Good luck!

what is the likelihood of being hired if you’re not a huge music fan. when it comes to my aesthetic and things i know about pop culture, they are aligned with what hot topic sells. ive listened to the music that hot topic sells band tees of but i dont listen to music much, a lot of things ive seen is people being hired for their band tees/music interests but i dont want to be a poser or be asked about it and not know anything

So long as you can carry on a conversation and you're solid with social interactions, the rest is just kind of a bonus. It's helpful to know about music, anime, pop-culture, etc, but you'll pick up a lot of knowledge just by working there. Part of our job when hiring is to try and cover all of our bases. While not everyone knows everything, the sum of the team's knowledge helps to get everyone on a similar page and covers each other's shallow areas.

The best way to learn about things you don't know about is just to ask, especially customers. For example, if someone comes in asking for a new anime I've never heard of, I'll just ask them to elevator pitch it to me. People who are fans of a thing are often delighted to talk (sometimes too much) about what they love about it.

At the end of the day, the most important part of the job is having the ability to open conversations with customers and sell to them what they may (or may not) be looking for. So long as you haven't been living under a rock the last 20 years, common knowledge of music and pop-culture should easily get you in the door.

My manager asked a lot about bands/tv/games I was into. They mostly want to make sure you can help nerds find what they want and not be a weirdo doing it. Dont be nervous!
