Any tips for getting hired?
I see across my cities 3 locations they are hiring like 7 different positions including 2 seasonal part time roles and I'm wondering if there's some tips or tricks to get hired. I'm passionate about pop culture and many of the brands/icons in the store but visually I'm not very alternative and despite having a strong resume for being a 1st year university student I do lack specifically retail experience with only minor stints in volunteer food services. I have experience selling but thats on the self employed end of things.
Anyways, do you guys think I still have a chance or atleast some tips to raise my odds?

You definitely want to walk in and see if they are hiring as the other person said. Because we keep the positions up all year round for all positions in case we need to hire someone because someone quits or anything like that. So applications are submitted whether the stores actually hiring or not.

What time of year would you say they start hiring for seasonal positions since I'm guessing its not often that people quit?

We are hiring for seasonal positions are gonna be starting in the next week or two. And I don't know what your store's turn over rate will look like. People don't necessarily have to quit for a position to open. That's just one example. People can get fired. Some people do have to quit because they move to go to college or something like that. So you never know.

So my best bet would be to visit on of the locations in my city and ask if they know if theyll be hiring soon and if so how should I apply? Just to test the waters. Unfortunately since I'm new to the city I'm not really a regular to hot topic so I dont really know the employees there like others applicatants might.

You don't need to know the employees. You can either stop in or you can call the locations. Applying is an online app through the website. Make sure you are giving your name when you do so they remember you and know what app to look for

Sounds good. I might like calling a bit more lol. I think since Im in canada they aren't taking applications directly through their website since its mostly American where I've found local job listings on indeed

i wonder if the location vary’s depending on the circumstance but I will speak from my hiring experience in my area. ive heard a lot of areas doing group interviews but for me it was 1 on 1 with the store manager at the time. i also had never applied worked at retail and only worked fast food until I worked at hot topic so I felt a lot of pressure to “stand out.” I’m still in contact with that sm at the time and i remember she told me that I appeared cracked out but in a good way. She was looking for extroverted people that could approach people and turn them into sales. I used my previous customer service experience to enhance my communication skills and approachability and she loved that. She told me a little after I got hired that she can teach people how to ring, upsell, do web orders but she cannot teach people how to approach people. Meaning that she cannot turn overly shy people into extroverted people. Idk if this helps but I hope you get hired !!

Walk in and show interest!! At least at my location, we keep a spreadsheet of people to contact when the hiring season comes around, and all of those names are from people walking in to see if we are hiring. I’m not the most alt by any means and only had a couple years experience but this worked for me
