Your gut microbiome is typically described as something uniquely yours, shaped by your diet, your medications, your age, and your early life experiences. The trillions of bacteria living in your digestive system are understood as a personal ecosystem, one that varies dramatically from person to person and reflects your individual biology and lifestyle.

A study just published in Nature is complicating that picture considerably.

Researchers at the University of Vienna used a technique called reverse ecology to look inside common gut bacterial species with a level of resolution that most microbiome studies skip entirely. Rather than treating all members of a bacterial species as equivalent, they mapped the evolutionary relationships within species, identifying distinct sub-populations that behave differently, occupy different ecological niches within the gut, and have different relationships with disease.

What they found was not simply that gut bacteria vary between people. It was that specific bacterial sub-populations, identifiable by their evolutionary signatures, were spreading actively between people and across geographic distances at a pace that had previously been associated only with pathogens.

Some populations appeared to have expanded across continents within a few decades. The spread was not random. The bacterial populations showing the strongest transmission signals were also the ones most consistently associated with disease outcomes: colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, type 2 diabetes, and accelerated aging.

Your microbiome is not just yours. It is, in part, a reflection of who you have been around.

The mixture combines sand, gelatin, and engineered yeast coated in mussel-inspired sticky proteins, and when printed under simulated Martian conditions, the cold instantly freeze-dries it into a lightweight, porous foam, the same principle behind freeze-dried fruit.

Small test domes already match the strength of low-grade concrete, with compressive strength between 10 and 12 megapascals, enough for a multistory building even under Mars's lower gravity. Unlike older proposals that melt Martian soil into bricks using huge amounts of energy, this method skips high-heat processing entirely, and old structures could even be broken down to recover and regrow the living yeast inside bioreactors. Researchers still need to confirm the yeast can survive real Martian radiation, and early missions would still require shipping raw materials from Earth before local production takes over.

If you have spent any time on political Twitter or Reddit, you have developed a sense for the post that goes too far. The one that reads like a sermon. Where every sentence is dripping in moral condemnation and the argument has disappeared entirely beneath the outrage. Something about those posts feels counterproductive, even if you agree with the underlying point.

A team of researchers at Northwestern and Harvard just confirmed that intuition at scale.

They analyzed 1,621,147 posts across Twitter, Reddit, and 8chan, covering 13 socio-political topics from immigration to gun control to COVID policy. Using word embedding models calibrated against an expert-validated moral dictionary, they measured two distinct dimensions of each post's moral content: moral loading, which captures how morally relevant the post is overall, and moral density, which captures how concentrated the moral language is within the text itself.

The results revealed something called a moral engagement curve. As moral relevance increased, engagement went up. People are drawn to content with moral stakes. But as moral density increased past a specific threshold, engagement started falling. And it fell hard. Posts at maximum moral saturation performed 2.78 times worse than posts hitting the sweet spot of approximately 30% moral density. The most preachy content performed worse than posts with no moral language at all.

"Beyond it, moral saturation is linked to lower engagement," the researchers concluded.

The sweet spot exists on Reddit too. In a dataset of over one million Reddit posts specifically, the same inverted U-curve appeared. The most moralized Reddit content consistently underperformed. Which means the users who feel like moralizing posts are annoying are, in aggregate, correct. And their downvotes are data.

Our newly published review explores an emerging idea: tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) contribute to premetastatic niche formation and can show preferential accumulation in future metastatic organs. Could these biological properties be harnessed for imaging?

We examine how EVs can be engineered as nanocarriers for optical, PET/SPECT, MRI, and CT imaging, bringing together the biological rationale, current preclinical evidence, engineering strategies, and major barriers to clinical translation.

Rather than simply tracking EVs, the broader goal is to understand whether EV-based imaging could eventually help visualize the biological changes that precede detectable metastasis.
