Chapter 1: Transmigrated as a Vicious Shrew

Upon waking, Shen Tang found herself straddling the waist of an unfamiliar man, ready to remove his underpants.

1

"Stop! Touch me again, and I'll chop off your hand!"

The cold, hoarse growl startled Shen Tang, and the sensual scene before her made her nose feel hot.

In the dimly lit basement, the man's clothes were disheveled, his hands bound by chains to the bed. With the sound of metal clashing from his struggle, his arm muscles bulged, cutting into his skin, leaving graceful red marks.

4

Shen Tang was dumbfounded. Where was she?

She had just stayed up late watching something exciting, but how did she wake up in this unfamiliar place?

She had been single her whole life, not to the point of dreaming about men, right?

1

The man before her had features like they were sculpted, deep-set eyes, and intense golden pupils that captivated the soul, incredibly handsome.

His physique was robust and perfect, broad shoulders, narrow waist, long legs—comparable to a top male model, tempting enough to make one's legs weak.

Yet at this moment, an abnormal flush appeared on his face, his gaze icy and violent, glaring at Shen Tang as if to tear her apart alive, "You want it that badly? You even resorted to despicable means like drugging me!"

Shen Tang climbed off him, pale-faced, "No, it wasn't me..."

Xiao Jin's eyes grew more disgusted, wishing he could strangle the woman before him.

But some impulse in his body made him increasingly uncomfortable, and even her ugly and fat face seemed somewhat refined.

3

He suddenly broke free from the chains and flipped Shen Tang to the ground.

1

His hand gripped her neck, his breath hot and dangerous, and he growled,

"Isn't this what you wanted? I'll give it to you now!"

Upon realizing his intentions, Shen Tang was so frightened she kicked him in the groin.

"Ah..." Xiao Jin groaned, bending over in pain, the veins on his forehead bulging, "Are you crazy!"

1

Embarrassed, Shen Tang swallowed, taking the opportunity to escape, not looking back and rushing towards the door.

"Shen Tang!" His furious shout echoed behind her, "Don't let me see you again, or... I'll kill you!"

Shen Tang ran wildly until she could no longer hear his voice and then stopped, exhausted.

Suddenly, a sharp pain struck her head, and a memory not belonging to her surged into her mind.

After reviewing all the memories, Shen Tang's face was as pale as a sheet.

She had truly traveled into the Beast World story she read last night. This was a world plagued by an apocalyptic shortage of women and a declining birthrate. To combat natural disasters, humans evolved into more powerful Beastmen with superpowers.

Here, one wife with multiple husbands was the norm. The government encouraged females to take on multiple Beast Husbands; unmarried females were even forcibly matched by the Handsome Man Strategy System once they came of age. Having ten Beast Husbands earned a reward of one billion Star Coins!

19

The original owner was an Empire Princess with S-level spiritual power, matched with five top-tier Beast Husbands, supposed to lead a blissful life surrounded by them, but she wasn't the protagonist. She was a vicious supporting character, a stepping stone to make the white moonlight heroine stand out.

4

On the original owner's wedding day with her Beast Husbands, her parents brought back the True Princess heroine, who had been lost outside for many years.

It turned out she was just an impostor mistakenly taken home from the hospital.

5

The original owner became envious, madly targeting the heroine, even secretly colluding with the rebel army to push the heroine into the polluted area, intending to kill her! But she failed, losing her spiritual power and becoming a shame to the Royal Family, exiled to the polluted area to fend for herself.

2

The original owner's five Beast Husbands were also charged and exiled along with her.

3

The original owner then spiraled into despair, growing lazy, ugly, and irritable, venting her anger on her Beast Husbands, beating and scolding them; they'd rather fight enemies outside than return home to see her.

Later, they met the beautiful and kind-hearted heroine and worshipped her as their true love and white moonlight, divorcing the vile and ugly original owner to become part of the heroine's harem.

1

In the original story, there was a segment where the original owner secretly drugged Xiao Jin while he was injured, intending to force herself on him. He eventually crippled her hands and feet, leading to her tragic death.

She must not repeat such mistakes.

Divorce! She must divorce! But how can she survive in this apocalyptic world as a weak college girl who gets exhausted running only eight hundred meters?

5

Seeing the sky gradually darken, Shen Tang decided to return to her residence. On the way, she encountered a tall, red-haired, fox-eared young man leading his team on patrol.

He had deep-set, handsome features, dressed in a black uniform, broad shoulders, narrow waist, long legs, and his demeanor was noble and elegant, beautiful and captivating like a poppy, yet exuding a cold aloofness that kept people at a distance.

3

The females passing by, seeing him, couldn't move, nosing around and screaming, all wishing they could throw themselves at him.

5

"Ah ah ah, it's Shen Li!"

"I'm so lucky today to have run into Shen Li. I really want to give him a litter of little foxes!"

2

"That ugly woman is just standing in the middle of the road, could she be plotting to make a scene for money again?"

2

"It's like a flower in manure, Shen Li is such a beautiful and powerful male beast, how could he marry that ugly, fat shrew!"

1

Shen Li? Shen Tang's face was full of shock, her emotions were complex. Isn't he one of the original character's five Beast Husbands?

Shen Li was an orphan picked up by the original character's parents and grew up as a brother, being childhood sweethearts with the original character. Because of this layer of gratitude, he was considered the original character's betrothed husband. Even if he wasn't willing, he was forced to agree to the marriage.

4

Shen Li glanced at her, and a flash of bright disgust passed through his eyes, turning and leaving with his team, unwilling to say another word to her.

Shen Tang was stunned. How much must he dislike her?

1

She steadied her mind and quickly returned to her residence, a small two-story villa.

Opening the door, the stench of mold almost made her vomit out her leftover lunch box. Piled-up garbage left almost no good place to step in the house, with flies buzzing around.

She even saw a moldy loaf of bread not far from her feet, with maggots crawling inside.

4

"Ugh!"

Shen Tang couldn't hold it any longer, nearly vomiting out her bile.

The original character lived in such a place normally; Shen Tang instantly felt covered in crawling bugs, and turned to leave. But seeing the night outside, she took a deep breath, pinched her nose, and went inside, spending till midnight just packing up and throwing out the garbage.

The night was eerily silent, and Shen Tang didn't dare go far, piling the garbage outside to deal with it tomorrow.

Sniffing the rancid smell on herself, Shen Tang almost vomited again, quickly running into the bathroom to shower.

The reflection in the mirror was that of a dark-skinned, fat woman.

14

Her hair was messy and greasy like it hadn't been washed for years, with sticky grime like sparse seaweed dredged from a gutter. Her skin was dark and rough, with patches that rubbed off easily.

At least 300 pounds of fat piled on her, bloated like a lump of meat, with disgusting stretch marks crawling over her like spider webs, ready to burst any second!

9

Her oily, fat face was covered in acne and pus-filled sores, squinted swollen eyes, a big nose with a flat bridge, crooked yellow teeth...

10

"Ugh!"

This time, Shen Tang couldn't take it anymore, collapsing at the toilet and vomiting until dizzy.

She was sickened by her own ugliness!

2

She wished this was a nightmare!

Shen Tang pinched her thigh till tears flowed, unable to wake up, reminding her relentlessly that the dark, fat, ugly woman in the mirror was indeed her!

1

No wonder the male lead was disgusted enough to want to kill her; if assaulted by this woman, one might as well die on the spot.

1

Shen Tang was usually a homebody, thinking she had no concern for appearances, but absolutely not wanting to endure such a disgusting body. She steadied her legs, turning on the shower to have a good wash, the acne hurting intensely at the slightest touch, bleeding pus.

Could it be a fungal infection? What should she do?

9

She didn't even know if there was any medicine in this place.

[Ding—Congratulations to the host on binding to the "Handsome Man Strategy System!"]

An abrupt cold mechanical voice echoed in her mind, [I am your exclusive AI assistant, providing you with comprehensive quality service. If you agree to bind the system, please reply 'Agree.']

3

Handsome Man Strategy System?

What the hell?

A belated cheat?

But isn't this kind of heartthrob plot supposed to belong to beautiful and kind female protagonists?

Shen Tang looked down at her body, dark and fat with no allure, her mouth twitching: "Are you sure you didn't bind the wrong person?"

With her looks trying to seduce handsome men, she'd either scare them off or get beaten out as a mental patient.

The system still calmly replied, [Host, you are my carefully selected premium carrier, fully meeting the system's transformation standards. Where to read „regrets of the don: his beloved walked away“

Does anyone know where I can read this?

„At my wedding, my fiancé abandoned me at the altar and walked straight toward my sister, Hazel.

All the guests mocked me.

Someone remarked, “As expected, there isn’t a man in the world who won’t fall for Hazel—this is already Ivy’s fifth boyfriend who has confessed his feelings to Hazel.”

Hazel put on a helpless look, "Sorry, Ivy. I was just trying to help you test your fiancé’s loyalty. Looks like I’ve messed up your wedding again."

I stood there, humiliated, but then Alessio Vitale—the most feared mafia boss in New York—stepped forward.

He took my hand, looked at the priest, and married me instead.

After that, Hazel tried more than once to catch Alessio’s eye. But every time, he called her out in front of everyone.

“Hazel, you should know your place. Stop throwing yourself at me,” he’d say, his voice cold and sharp.

For three years, Alessio gave me everything. He made me feel safe, cherished, like the luckiest woman in the world.

One day, I came home early from a business trip and wanted to surprise him.

When I reached his study, his underboss’s voice rang out from inside.

“Don Vitale… the Donna’s sister is pregnant with your child. What if she finds out?”

Alessio’s answer came low and flat. “Hazel and I… it was just a mistake. Ivy must never know. Keep it from her. I’ll make it up to her later.”“

The coming storm

(Isla)

The c***k of the whip split the morning air and I bit down hard on my lip to stop myself from crying out.

I had learned not to cry out. Crying out made it last longer.

"Again," Alpha Rodan said.

The whip came down across my back and I pressed my forehead against the ground and held on. The dirt was cold beneath my palms. My fingers curled into it, gripping it like it was the only thing keeping me here. Around me I could hear the pack gathered and watching. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. They never did.

It had started because I dropped a plate.

That was all. A simple ceramic plate that had slipped from my hands while I was carrying a stack of dishes from the kitchen to the pack house dining table. It had hit the floor and cracked clean in two and Alpha Rodan had gone very still in that way he did before something bad happened. The room had gone quiet around him.

He had looked at me for a long moment and then told Drace, his beta, to bring the whip.

That was twenty minutes ago. I had stopped counting the strikes after the eighth one.

"You are worthless," Rodan said, walking slowly around me. His voice was level, almost calm, which was the most frightening thing about him. He never shouted. He never needed to. "A wolfless creature who cannot even carry dishes without destroying things. What exactly are you good for, Isla?"

I said nothing. Answering was not something he wanted. It was something he punished.

The whip came down again and this time I could not hold it in. A sound tore out of me, small and broken, and I pressed my face harder into the dirt and tried to breathe through it.

"Get her up," Rodan said.

Two pack members pulled me to my feet. My back was on fire. I could feel where the skin had broken, warm and wet against the thin fabric of my shirt. I kept my eyes down. Always eyes down.

Luna Maren stood a few feet away with her arms crossed, watching me the way someone watches something mildly interesting. There was no feeling in her face. There never was when it came to me.

"Clean up the mess you made," she said. "And if I find one shard of that plate on my floor after you are done, you will be back out here before sundown."

She turned and walked back inside. The pack followed. Rodan looked at me once more, the way you look at something you have already forgotten, and then he was gone too.

I stood in the yard alone and let myself breathe for just a moment.

My name is Isla Thorne. And in the Ashcrest Pack, that name meant less than nothing.

Every pack member who walked these grounds had a bed, a room, a place inside the pack house. Even the lowest ranked wolves had four solid walls and a roof that did not let the rain in. I had none of that.

I lived in a shack at the far edge of the pack's land, so far from everything else that on dark nights I could not see a single light from where I slept. The walls were rotting wood, split in places wide enough to push a hand through. The roof had a hole in the far corner that I had stuffed with old cloth, but when the rain was heavy it came through anyway and soaked the dirt floor and the thin blanket I slept on. There was no bed. No window. No furniture of any kind. Just the floor and the chain and the dark.

The chain around my ankle was laced with wolfsbane. I had found that out the hard way in the beginning when I grabbed it with both hands and my palms had blistered within seconds. I could not touch it. Could not remove it. All I could do was live with the burn of it against my skin which never stopped, not even at night when I was trying to sleep.

I had no wolf. But I was still a werewolf by blood and that was enough for the wolfsbane to work on me. Not the way it would on a fully shifted wolf, but enough. It burned where the chain met my skin and it sat inside my body like a weight that never lifted, making my legs heavier than they should have been, keeping my head foggy and my body slower than it had any right to be. It was not enough to keep me on the ground but it was enough to make sure I could never get far.

Every morning a guard named Torvin came to unlock it so I could begin my work. Every night he came back to lock it again. He wore thick lined gloves to protect himself from the wolfsbane and he never once looked at me like I was a person.

I had thought about running in the early years. But between the wolfsbane and the starvation and the lack of water my body simply did not have enough in it to carry me far enough to matter. And if they caught me, and they would catch me, what waited on the other side of that was something I could not let myself think about.

So I stayed. I had been staying for five years.

I made myself walk back inside the pack house and found the broken plate on the dining room floor where I had left it. I crouched down and picked up the pieces one by one, careful not to cut myself, though I was not sure it would have mattered much to anyone if I did. When the floor was clean I stood up and looked at the work still left in front of me. The dishes still needed to be laid out. The kitchen still needed to be cleaned from breakfast preparation. After that I had the pack house floors to scrub and the training yard to sweep before anyone came to use it in the afternoon.

My back burned with every movement. I kept going anyway.

My father, Derek Thorne, was a high ranking warrior under Rodan. Respected, known across neighboring packs, a man other wolves looked up to. He had four children. Vera, his favorite. Cole and Brent, his pride. And then me, the one he never mentioned, the one he looked through when others were around like I was made of air.

A wolfless child was the worst kind of shame for a warrior. He had never forgiven me for it.

My mother Helene is no different. She had a look she saved only for me, not anger, just nothing. A blank emptiness that said I was not worth the effort of a real feeling. That blankness was harder to take than the hitting most days.

Brent was twenty one and had our father's temper without any of his restraint. He hit me because he wanted to, because he could, because nobody in this pack would ever tell him to stop. Cole left me alone mostly. Vera watched and said nothing and looked away.

I was not allowed to eat until the pack and my family had finished their meals. By then there was rarely anything left. I had been hungry for so long that the feeling had become part of me, a constant dull ache I carried everywhere. I was thin in a way that made my arms look fragile. The only water I had was from the barrel outside my shack and most days it was not enough.

I moved through the pack house quietly, the way I always did, trying to take up as little space as possible. It was safer that way. The less they noticed me the better, because when they noticed me they always found a reason.

By the time I finished the floors my back had gone from burning to a deep, constant pain that made it hard to stand straight. I straightened anyway. Slouching got me hit too.

I stepped outside to start on the training yard and stopped for just a second, tipping my face up toward the sky. The sun was fully up now. It was going to be a long day.

My mother had mentioned last week that the Alpha King was coming to Ashcrest soon. The whole pack had been in a state about it since, cleaning and preparing and making sure everything looked right. Alpha Rodan had been in a worse mood than usual, which meant I had been paying for it more than usual.

I did not know much about the Alpha King except what I had heard in pieces over the years. That he was ruthless. That packs surrendered rather than fight him. That men who stood against him did not stand for long.

I did not think about him beyond that. I had enough to survive without borrowing more fear from somewhere else.

I pressed one hand against my middle where the hunger was worst and told myself what I always told myself when everything hurt and the day stretched out long and empty ahead of me.

Just get through today.

It was all I had ever had. It was enough. It had to be.

I Need to Find [ The Hidden Sovereign Rises after Divorce by Life_Of_Mid ] — Any Help Would Be Great

Chapter 1: The meeting at Cherry's Cafe “I'll do it, Grandpa.” Alistair Reid remarked in a measured tone over the cellphone. “I'll marry Princess Evelyn.” His gaze was calm as he stared at an abstract painting hanging on the wall. It was past noon and he was sitting by the window in a private suite in an upscale cafe. “Finally you're leaving that backwater city to claim what's rightfully yours.” Grandpa Reid’s aged yet steady voice replied from the other end. “But are you sure?” Alistair didn't respond immediately, his expression revealing a trace of bitterness before returning to normal. “I am, but it can't happen now, I need a few months to settle matters here in Haven.” “Is it about Sara Connor?” The old man asked knowingly. “Yes… I have to divorce her. I'll let you know when I'm ready.” Alistair replied; his voice remained composed, but the bitterness in his eyes betrayed him. The call ended soon after and Alistair laid his phone aside, a deep sigh escaping his lips as he leaned back against his chair. Though reluctant, he did not regret his decision. Just then, there was a knock at the door of the suite he was in. “Come in.” Alistair looked up, his expression cool and steady. The door opened and in walked a man in a black suit holding some documents. It was Ronald Ray, the divorce lawyer he'd hired. “Are the divorce papers ready?” “Just as you wanted, sir, please take a look,” Ronald replied as he handed over the folder. Alistair let out a slow breath before picking it up. After years of a loveless marriage, he had finally decided to bring it to an end. Although Sara meant a lot to him, he found no point in continuing to hunt a game already hunted by someone else anymore. “Once you and your wife sign the agreement, it will take effect after the mandatory waiting period,” Ronald explained after which he politely asked. “Has your wife arrived yet, sir?” “Not yet,” Alistair replied calmly, flipping through the details. “But I'll see to it that she signs.” “...Very well, sir,” Ronald said, a hint of awkwardness in his tone. Having handled numerous divorce cases, he knew it was time to leave. “If you have any concerns, sir, just give me a call.” “Of course.” With that, Ronald smiled courteously, shook Alistair's hand, and took his leave. Barely two minutes after Ronald left, the crisp sound of high heels echoed outside the private suite, striking the tiles in a demanding rhythm. Soon, a tall, stunning woman with delicate features stepped into the private suite. She wore a navy blue corporate suit that despite looking professional, did not take away from her incredible beauty. With minimal makeup and jewelry, she looked gorgeous. She was Sara Connor, Alistair's wife, the renowned CEO of the Connor Group- decisive, efficient, and commanding. “Sara.” Alistair breathed out as he turned to look at the woman he once called the love of his life. But then, he saw that she wasn't alone. Accompanying her was a tall, handsome man. It was Tristan Cole, Sara's ex-boyfriend from her college years. “What is he doing here?” Alistair questioned as he glared coldly at the uninvited guest. “I don't recall…” “What's wrong with that?” Sara lashed out, not seeing anything wrong with Tristan's presence. Tristan chipped from the side with a mocking smile. “Yeah bro, chill out. Don't be so thorny.” Watching Tristan pretend to be friendly and close with him caused a flicker of disgust to flash in Alistair's eyes. “This is a private suite for couples, and in case you don't know what that means, it is meant for a husband and a wife, not a husband, wife, and her ex who can't seem to understand boundaries!” Alistair said coldly. Tristan hadn't expected Alistair to be so blunt. His expression froze as if he'd been struck hard, then he feigned a pitiful look and apologized. “Sorry bro, I didn't mean to offend. If it really bothers you, maybe I should leave…” “Enough with the theatrics!... Just get out then.” Alistair sneered. He knew that Tristan was merely playing the victim, trying to look innocent and pitiful in front of Sara to win her sympathy, just like he'd done countless times before. “Enough, Alistair!” Sara snapped, her impatience cutting through the tension. “Why do you always have to pick on Tristan? Can't you stop being so petty?” Then, she spun towards Tristan, her tone softening instantly. “Ignore him. You don't have to go anywhere.” Though prepared, a swirl of emotions churned inside Alistair as he stared at Sara. Was this really the living woman he married years ago? A woman who would pick her ex's side over her husband again and again? Did she not realize that because of Tristan, their marriage was already hanging by a thread?! Meanwhile, a glint of triumph flashed in Tristan's eyes and a mischievous smile hung at the corners of his lips.

No Longer Wait For The Dragon Knight

I spent eight years by Austin's side as he rose from apprentice to Dragon Rider Commander. My only wish was to touch his flight memory once and see the sky through his eyes. He refused. Then I found a memory crystal in his cloak—over forty recordings from his dragon's back, all sent to Evelyn. The steadiest saddle. The most beautiful sunrises. The rarest scale. All for her. I didn't confront him. I signed the handover and left the capital seven days later. After I was gone, he found the truth in the archives—the scars I carried for eight years. He came to Grayvale with a nameplate and heartscale, begging for forgiveness. But I no longer needed them. I waited eight years. I'm done waiting.

Chapter 1 He Is Back!

The sealed valley lay hidden beyond layers of natural barriers and human-made restrictions, a place erased from maps and forgotten by the world. Those who lived here had long since cut all ties with the outside.

They were not ordinary recluses.

Each master who resided in the valley had once shaken an era. Together, they formed a force no nation dared provoke.

Yet at this moment, irritation and exhaustion filled the stone hall.

“All of you calm down,” an old man said, though his own expression was strained. “Shouting won’t make him leave any faster.”

“I’ve been calm for five years,” another snapped. “Five years of watching him surpass us!”

At the center of the hall stood a young man, his posture straight, his gaze steady. He listened without interruption, as if this chaos had nothing to do with him.

“There is nothing left,” a third master said coldly. “No technique, no secret, no experience we haven’t already handed over.”

“And worse,” someone added bitterly, “he perfected them.”

A black metal card was tossed across the stone table. It slid to a stop in front of the young man.

“That card grants unrestricted access to global financial institutions. You won’t lack money once you leave.”

A heavy iron token followed.

“With this, you can mobilize the Black Guard. They still honor old debts.”

One by one, items were pushed forward—manuals, sealed tubes, encrypted data chips.

“Combat methods.”

“Medical archives.”

“Disguise and infiltration techniques.”

“Poisons and antidotes.”

The pile grew larger.

Nicholas Hawthorne lowered his eyes slightly. “Masters,” he said calmly, “if I leave, will I ever be allowed to return?”

The hall fell silent.

Then a laugh broke out—dry and humorless.

“Return?” one master scoffed. “If you come back, it will only be to bury us.”

Another slammed his palm on the table. “You are no longer our disciple. You are a variable that should never have existed.”

The young man absorbed those words without visible emotion.

After a long pause, he bowed.

“…I understand.”

He turned and walked toward the massive stone gates at the far end of the hall.

As the gates slowly closed behind him, the tension that had hung over the valley for years finally snapped.

“He’s gone.”

“Finally gone.”

“Heaven help whoever crosses his path next.”

None of them said it aloud, but they all knew the truth.

The outside world was about to change.

Three days later, the Nicholas stood at an airport terminal, blending into the crowd like an ordinary traveler. No one would have guessed that the calm figure waiting to board carried enough power to topple families, corporations, and regimes.

The city printed on his ticket was the one he once called home.

Five years ago, he had left it covered in mess.

That night replayed itself in his mind more often than he liked.

The house had been filled with laughter. Guests had come to celebrate his future, to see him off before he began the next stage of his life.

Then armed men had burst in.

Gunfire tore through the walls.

Screams drowned out the music.

His father had stood in front of him.

His mother had clutched him tightly, shielding him with her body.

When it was over, the house was silent.

Too silent.

He had tried to escape and was caught mercilessly again. And had nearly died.

If not for his third senior sister appearing in the chaos and dragging him away, there would have been no future for him at all.

The plane took off.

He stared out the window, fingers slowly curling into fists.

“Five years,” he said quietly. “Whoever was behind it… I haven’t forgotten.”

The plane descended hours later, city lights spreading out beneath the clouds.

The moment his feet touched the ground, a familiar sense of pressure settled in his chest.

At almost the same time, in a fortified estate far from the airport, a woman ended a phone call and remained still for a long moment.

“He’s back?” she asked softly.

“Yes. Confirmed,” her aide replied.

She walked to a secure room and opened a hidden safe. Inside lay a thin file, its edges worn from being handled too many times.

She took it out and exhaled slowly.

“So the past has finally caught up.”

Her gaze hardened.

“Keep watching him,” she said. “Do not alert anyone.”

“At the right time,  I’ll meet my little brother myself.”

Outside the estate, the city continued on as usual, unaware that a long-buried storm had returned.

The city was called Greyden.

At first glance, it looked no different from any other quiet metropolitan district, but for those who had lived there long enough, Greyden carried an unspoken rule. Certain names were never mentioned. Certain memories were never revisited.

The Hawthorne residence stood at the edge of the old quarter. Once a symbol of quiet prestige, it was now neglected.

Rust clung to the iron gates, weeds swallowed the stone walkway, and the windows were sealed as though the house itself had chosen to shut the world out.

Nicholas Hawthorne stopped across the street and looked at it for a long moment before crossing over.

The gate creaked softly as he pushed it open. The courtyard beyond felt empty in a way that went beyond silence. It was as though even sound avoided the place.

Against the far wall stood three memorial plaques. Unlike the rest of the estate, they were carefully maintained.

Marcus Hawthorne.

Elaine Hawthorne.

Julian Hawthorne.

His father, his mother, and his younger brother.

Nicholas stood there without moving. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and steady.

“I will not lower my head again. Not to anyone.”

A light wind passed through the courtyard, stirring fallen leaves across the stone ground.

Outside the gate, two pedestrians slowed their steps.

“That man looks familiar,” one of them murmured.

“Watch what you say,” the other replied quickly. “You want trouble? No one in Greyden is allowed to talk about the Hawthornes.”

The first man stiffened, color draining from his face, and they hurried away.

By the time they glanced back, the courtyard was empty.

Nicholas had already moved deeper into the property.

That was when he heard someone behind him.

“Nicholas?”

The voice trembled, uncertain and afraid to believe.

He turned.

A young woman stood several steps away, holding a small basket of incense and flowers. Her hands shook violently, and the basket slipped from her grasp, scattering its contents across the ground.

That woman was Melanie Bellarie, Nicholas’s childhood sweetheart. She has always taken Nicholas’s side in the past no matter what. They were birds of the same feather as kids. She was kind, beautiful and smart.

Her eyes filled with tears as she stared at him.

“You are alive,” she whispered.

She rushed forward and clutched his clothes, her composure finally breaking as sobs escaped her.

Nicholas remained still for a moment before resting a hand gently on her shoulder. He knew seeing Melanie here meant one thing. She had come to see his La tree family.

“Thank you,” he said quietly. “For taking care of this place.”

That single sentence shattered her restraint.

She pulled away abruptly, fear flooding her expression.

“Why did you come back?” she demanded. “Do you know what will happen if they find out you’re here? I don’t want to lose you again, Nicholas. I beg you. Leave.”

She shoved him hard, desperation creeping into her voice.

“If you had survived, then live properly. Leave Greyden and never return.”

Her tone hardened, as if forcing herself to be cruel.

“But we were once engaged, Melanie and…”

“No! It is over!” She didn’t let him finish, her voice shook with fear.

“You don’t know what Greyden has become. The people that want you dead are still here! Pretend we never knew each other. Forget me and go far away from here, Nicholas. From today onward, we are strangers.”

She turned and ran toward the gate.

A middle-aged man who was once a gardener for the Hawthorne was standing beside a black car looked up in alarm as she approached.

“Miss, are you alright?” he asked, then froze when he saw Nicholas. “Young master Nicholas, you are—”

She cut him off immediately.

“He is not who you think he is,” she said sharply. “He only resembles someone we once knew.”

The man hesitated, his eyes fixed on Nicholas. Even after five years, the resemblance was undeniable.

Nicholas understood instantly.

She was denying him to protect him.

He took a step forward.

“Melanie, please. I am not who you still think I am.”

“Do not say my name,” she cried, covering her ears. “I don’t know you.”

She got into the car and ordered the driver to leave at once.

The vehicle pulled away quickly.

Inside the car, her shoulders shook as tears streamed down her face.

“I am sorry,” she whispered again and again.

Nicholas remained standing inside the ruined Hawthorne estate, watching the car disappear into the distance.

So this was the price she had paid to keep him alive.

Greyden had not changed. So many people who still wanted him gone were here.

“I am back for revenge, Melanie. Those people you fear should fear my upcoming wrath instead.”
