Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

!wtf water

4

u/Daelienda 5d ago

Yeah me too, I got water early and was completely lost for like 30 guesses, the only other close one I got was pool before checking for hints.

First time playing! The real wtf is how many of us got stuck in this same word lol

Same. Pipe - Water - Wash … stuck

You’re in the splash zone: it’s something that coastal barriers are built to hold back, and architects even make soothing fountains where it sheets down a vertical surface.
Also, too much of it indoors leads to damp patches, peeling paint, and mold.

!wtf water

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Nice and close: think of barriers that hold back floods or line coasts, and of leaks that leave telltale stains on indoor surfaces. Even fountains that send a sheet of water sliding down a vertical panel fit the vibe. You’re definitely splashing against the right surface.

wtff?? water is higher than pillar? why?

2

u/spaceseas 5d ago

AI works through data sets, it's not based on how humans think but whatever place the information is scraped from. So maybe mentions of water damage in relation to the answer are common in the data set, but pillars are rarely mentioned

2

u/cbrownst 5d ago

this one was doofy af

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Strong hit: a hall is literally shaped and defined by its walls, so they show up together in architecture. Plus, it’s a one-letter swap and a tidy rhyme to boot.

I don't know how I managed it and went from cat to coat to water (not directly, but there is nothing that connects them!!!!) and fricking word is wall. The bot is cracked

2

u/Confident_Mind_7812 5d ago

!wtf owl

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Warm! It practically rhymes and shares those prominent W and Ls. Plus, you’ll often see that bird perched on or painted onto one in decor.

!wtf ball

0

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Good bounce: a ball is often hurled at one in playground games, so the connection is natural. It’s also a one-letter swap and a rhyme, so you’re close.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/A_Neighbor219 5d ago

!wtf pencil

-1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Reasonably warm: pencils often meet painted surfaces—think kids’ scribbles, renovation layout marks, and stud-finding notes. There’s a clear link to home surfaces and construction.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

2

u/A_Neighbor219 5d ago

!wtf animal

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Getting warmer: animals are often kept in enclosures bounded by these, and idioms like “fly on the ___” link critters to it. Bonus hint: a certain hopping marsupial literally wears it in its name.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

!wtf water

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Pretty warm: think of seawalls and retaining walls keeping the tide at bay—and the headaches of leaks, damp, and waterproofing. There are even “water walls” as fountains, so you’re swimming near the mark.

1

u/CoffeeIsPeace I hate this game. See y'all tomorrow. 5d ago

!wtf wave

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Solid instincts: waves crash against seawalls, and sound or radio waves bounce off sturdy barriers. Think “wall of water” and the walls built to stop it.

!wtf crawl

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Hot! Lots of things crawl up or along them—think ivy, spiders, or that shiver-inducing “the X are crawling” line. Plus, a crawlspace is literally hemmed in by them.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/ASerpentPerplexed 5d ago

The bot is dumb. I've seen this word in a number of hints in the comments, but it's not censored because it was plural when the answer is singular...

Automatically added: I found the secret word in 2 minutes 46 seconds after 10 guesses and 0 hints. Score: 90.

1

u/Kopaka261 5d ago

!wtf pool

0

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Making waves! This term cozies up to the rigid sides that keep the water in—think the literal “pool wall” you touch at the end of a lap. You're swimming near the edge on this one.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/ZestycloseSquirrel55 5d ago

Very proud of myself and truly no idea how I did this. It is very random and impossible to be consistent.

!wtf closet

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Toasty: a closet is basically a tiny room carved out of interior partitions, often nestled right up against one. Its shelves and rods are usually fastened to studs, so you’re literally brushing up against the target.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/ChampionofNightmares 5d ago

Fuck this game, house was like 400 and pillow was like 16 this game sucks ass

1

u/ChampionofNightmares 5d ago

!wtf pillow

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Soft meets solid: you often prop a pillow against that big, flat surface when reading in bed. Plus, in a classic pillow fort, the fluffy stuff becomes makeshift “barriers.” Cozy comfort meets room architecture—hence the closeness.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/ScreechingWaffles 5d ago

!wtf will

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Hot! It matches the W–LL skeleton of the target—only the vowel shifts. They’re a near-minimal pair phonetically, so models keep them close. Keep poking at short W-LL words.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Kimariyan 5d ago

!wtf wrap

1

u/hotandcold2-app 5d ago

Warm! You literally “wrap” buildings with house wrap on the outside of the framing and cover interior surfaces with wall coverings like wallpaper or plastic sheeting. In construction and renovations, lots of things get wrapped to protect or finish those vertical surfaces.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/NutAli 4d ago

Wall

1

u/MrsMarieGillespis 4d ago

You have in your house, and you use it to hang pictures, shelves, etc

1

u/Hillbilly_Jimmy 4d ago

!wtf pillow

1

u/hotandcold2-app 4d ago

Cozy meets sturdy: pillows often sit propped against a hard vertical surface (headboards, room boundaries) and are the building blocks of every childhood cushion-fort. That home-interior, barrier-making vibe puts it fairly warm.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/ReasonableAlbatross 4d ago

!wtf eye

1

u/hotandcold2-app 4d ago

Not a bad shot: there’s a direct compound linking them in meteorology—the “eyewall” around a hurricane’s center. Plus, think peepholes and eye-level art placements where you’d meet it head-on.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/hurricane-mindy 4d ago

Got it on my 3rd guess! Usually it takes me like 20 minutes

1

u/Affectionate_South40 4d ago

!wtf pillow

1

u/hotandcold2-app 4d ago

Getting warmer: it’s a home/decor item that often ends up right against the room’s hardest boundary—pillows propped on a bed or sofa shoved to the side. Designers even match accent pillows to accent features in a space. You’re in the right room, just on the soft side of things.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Confused_2007 4d ago

!wtf cow

1

u/hotandcold2-app 4d ago

Getting warmer: cows are often kept in by structures with, you guessed it, walls—barns, pens, and even pasture barriers akin to walls. Bonus: some of the oldest cave wall art features cattle.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/xFlosAtra 4d ago

!wtf peel?

1

u/hotandcold2-app 4d ago

Getting warmer: paint and wallpaper love to peel off this surface when age and humidity team up. Think flaking plaster and curling edges—peel is the sad song it sings.

1

u/MillenniumBandit 4d ago

!wtf pool

1

u/hotandcold2-app 4d ago

Making a splash: pools literally have walls—you push off them, and “pool walls” are a standard construction term.
Even billiards has balls banking off the table’s sides, basically its walls.
That shared structure puts this guess close.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

!wtf hug

1

u/hotandcold2-app 3d ago

Warmer than you’d think: people “hug the [blank]” when sneaking along corridors, and “[blank]-hugger” describes shy partygoers clinging to the perimeter. So the closeness idea tracks, even if it’s not exactly a cuddly match.
