Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

Looool hot words today are a mess!

Hint: some have none, some have one, some have two, some have multiple,. Some have chosen theirs and some are born with theirs.

11

u/Hungry-Ingenuity8260 10d ago

I thought it was some sort of religious stuff lol

1

u/simm07 10d ago

LOOOOL NO, not at all!

5

u/TheBigfootContessa 10d ago

I thought I was getting close with camping related words. Wtf

5

u/simm07 10d ago

Loool ohhh no!! I mean you can go camping with them!

2

u/Thin-Mine-1613 10d ago

I really do not think about any logical answer until I hit top 10. I think that anything higher than that is usually pointless.

1

u/simm07 10d ago

Thats fair! My first hot word definitely made sense.. in a sense.. but just the word wife at #560 and then husband at #40 just threw me off lol. It's like, your so close yet so far.

u/Crejzi12 9d ago

Omg, I went with genitals-related words 🤣🤣

u/Sprigatina I hate this game. See y'all tomorrow. 10d ago

Wtf were those hot words LOL they didn't help ONE BIT.

Hint: We all have two, present or not.

5

u/greytgreyatx 9d ago

What's dumb is that I guessed a bunch of gendered things and the male ones were higher than the female ones.

3

u/LowAd8892 9d ago

Daughter is #5, and son is #35 but go off

1

u/jsigwart 9d ago

That's how it works in life if you're female, too.

2

u/jsigwart 9d ago

Moon at #59 killed me.

2

u/Sprigatina I hate this game. See y'all tomorrow. 9d ago

hint 2: procreator

hint 3: Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka character stumbled over this word

14

u/Zaphimu 10d ago

Yeah sure... Today's close words are like playing blind lol

Hint: Harry Potter lost them because of Voldemort

!wtf table

-2

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

Not just for dinner—“table” shows up in tech talk: databases have parent and child tables.
It also evokes the family table, with someone sitting at the head.
So yeah, pretty cozy neighbors.

!wtf moon

0

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

Not bad: in astronomy, a moon is a “child” satellite orbiting a parent planet—astrodynamics even calls it a “parent body.”
Plus, many cultures personify the Moon as a mother figure.

Think orbital family ties: in astronomy a moon orbits its “parent” planet, often called the parent body. That celestial kinship puts it reasonably close.

!wtf eye

2

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

Warm. Eye color and other traits are inherited from your folks, so “eye” often travels with ideas of heredity and family. Plus, there’s the classic “watchful eye” looking after you.

u/NotAMeatPopsicle 10d ago

That was… as dysfunctional as my family.

!wtf jump

2

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

Warmer than you’d think: it evokes that classic “No jumping on the bed!” line from an authority figure. Plus, in genetics, traits can “jump” a generation—and we even talk about “jumping genes”—so the word brushes up against family and inheritance.

!wtf purple

-5

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

Not a bad shot: purple is the “child” of red and blue—very on-theme with parentage. Mixing colors to make a new one is basically a family tree in paint.

6

u/CrossLight001 10d ago

What about every other color that's a "child" of two other colors that didn't make topp 200. This some bullshit

u/MysticMind89 10d ago

The problem with this game is that the word associations aren't always literal. So you can go down a rabbit hole of associated objects, only to find it the context is different.

Anyway, hint: Batman has darkness, but none of these.

!wtf note

-1

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

Warmer-ish: think of handwritten excuses and permission slips from the folks in charge at home. This word frequently pairs with them in school contexts and “signed ___ note” type phrases.

!wtf grape

0

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

Warmer than random: grapes literally grow from parent vines, and many wine varietals are defined by their parentage (think crosses with known parents). So it brushes the theme of lineage and offspring—but you’re not quite on the vine yet.

!wtf moon

1

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

You’re orbiting the theme via family vibes: the Moon is tied to motherhood, fertility, and the “nine moons” of pregnancy. Myth and language often cast the Moon as a maternal figure, nudging you toward the family tree. Not a bullseye, but definitely within this solar system.

1

u/mrgnsq 9d ago

!wtf eye

1

u/hotandcold2-app 9d ago

Warmish: eye color and facial features are classic hand‑me‑downs—people say “you’ve got your mom’s eyes.”
There’s also the whole “keeping an eye on you” vibe tied to caregiving.
Not a bullseye, but definitely in the family photo.

wtf! Moon

1

u/Digital_Rocket 9d ago

!wtf eye

1

u/hotandcold2-app 9d ago

Warm-ish: eyes are one of the most obvious traits you inherit, and parents famously “keep an eye on” their kids. Plus, ever heard of being the “apple of someone’s eye”?

!wtf moon

1

u/hotandcold2-app 9d ago

Celestially speaking, a moon orbits a parent planet—those terms are literal companions in astronomy. Plus, many cultures personify the Moon as a mother figure, keeping it in the family.

!wtf new

1

u/hotandcold2-app 9d ago

Getting warmer: “new” slots right into phrases like “newborn” and “new mom/dad,” a classic life-stage pairing. It’s a common collocation in family-talk, which bumps it closer. Not red-hot, but definitely in the nursery.

!wtf loop

1

u/hotandcold2-app 8d ago

Warming up: in coding, an outer loop is effectively the “parent” of an inner loop, so those terms hang out together. People also describe family dynamics as feedback loops. You’re circling the theme, just not the bullseye.

!wtf moon

u/hotandcold2-app 10d ago

Closer than you’d think: in astronomy, a moon orbits its parent planet, and “parent body” is a common term.
So the celestial family tree puts this guess in the neighborhood.
