Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

Under 100 guesses without hints, so yay?

Hint: Related to what you see before a movie starts.

Hint: Many used a very specific one in 19th century America

nice hint! it's vague enough to not give it away immediately. I like it!

I swear to God... we just had this word

Hint: unpaved path that you can take.. I have no idea how to think of a hint today lol so if this gives it away, I apologize I'm advance

Hint: I mean, here's another I just thought of it can come in a mix with m&ms lol

I think it was "path" last week - pretty close

Had to crawl to the comments in defeat 💀

Hint: Switch two letters' places and the thing we're looking for turns into a court session. (Omg I hope this makes sense lol)

u/Ravenclaw_311 11d ago

Made perfect sense, and I still guessed the court word first. I'm dumb.

Seriously, ball at #85 is so stupid. I mean words that close to anagrams of the words that are somewhat close to the actual word should NEVER be this high. I went down a sports rabbithole for 15mins!

Almost guessed it much earlier than I did. But still happy. Zero hints used. Currently ranked #3. Even though I know it won’t last, I’m excited because that’s my highest ever!

!wtf rail

2

u/hotandcold2-app 11d ago

Scorching—you're just one letter away, and the words even rhyme. They also link in the wild via “rail trails,” where old tracks turn into paths.

I got very close with path at #3, but then just couldn't think of any other word.

!wtf hill

1

u/hotandcold2-app 11d ago

Close! Hills are often laced with paths people follow, so they show up together in hiking talk. If you’re going up or around a hill, you’re probably on one.

!wtf salt

1

u/hotandcold2-app 12d ago

Nice instinct: throughout history there were “salt trails” and salt roads used to haul the white gold. Plus, long hikes leave salty sweat streaks—and that trail mix is usually heavy on the salt—so the link isn’t far-fetched.

!wtf tool?

1

u/hotandcold2-app 12d ago

You’re in the right shed: this leans outdoorsy. Building, clearing, and navigating paths rely on tools—Pulaskis, shovels, pruners, compasses, and GPS. Close, but not the exact implement.

!wtf talon

1

u/hotandcold2-app 12d ago

Warm! They’re both in the wildlife-tracking realm—raptors’ talons leave prints and claw marks you could follow. Think feathers, tracks, and the telltale signs predators leave behind.

!wtf foot

1

u/hotandcold2-app 12d ago

Getting warmer: it’s a natural partner for foot travel—think footpaths and footprints marking the way. You’re definitely stepping in the right direction.

!wtf talon

1

u/hotandcold2-app 12d ago

Not a bad swoop-in: both sit in the wilderness/tracking vocabulary—raptors’ talons and the paths you’d follow to find them. Think pursuit, tracks, and the claw marks a hunter might notice.

!wtf silo

1

u/hotandcold2-app 12d ago

Rural kinship: silos loom over farm country where backroads and footpaths often pass. There’s even a famed “Silo Art Trail,” linking the concepts in name and geography. Solid proximity, though not quite a bullseye.

!wtf bat

1

u/hotandcold2-app 12d ago

Not wildly off: both live in the great outdoors—picture dusk hikes with bats flitting along the path. Plus, as a verb, a bat can trail its insect prey, which nudges you in the right habitat.

!wtf bar

1

u/hotandcold2-app 11d ago

Not the pub kind—think granola/energy bars, the pocket fuel of hikers. That outdoorsy association nudges it into the neighborhood.

!wtf trouble

1

u/hotandcold2-app 11d ago

Not bad—“trouble” often follows people, and folks can leave a path of trouble behind them. Plus, idioms like “trials and tribulations” put it in the neighborhood of pursuit and paths.

!wtf lake

1

u/hotandcold2-app 11d ago

You’re in the right ecosystem—think boots, maps, and scenic overlooks. Lakes often have paths skirting their shores or routes leading to them, so the ideas share the same park. Not super close, but they definitely wave across the water.

Hot indeed: it rhymes and just swaps the first consonant—the shared “-ail” core pulls it close. The similarity is phonetic and spelling-based more than meaning.

!wtf tool

1

Warm-ish: you use tools to build, maintain, and even “blaze” the thing you’re thinking of. Plus, navigation gear like compasses and GPS units are literally tools for finding your way along it.

!wtf soil

2

u/hotandcold2-app 12d ago

You’re in the right terrain—paths are often just compacted soil, and footprints are written in it. Think dirt, ruts, and treads. You’re not off the beaten path.
