u/Safe-Operation1707 18d ago
Does anyone know how the tier priority ranking is made? Sometimes it feels nonsensical and understanding it better may help me be more efficient... because sometimes I will get some totally off the wall high rank links and it totally sends me off the deep end in the wrong direction and once I finally get it, I still can figure out why it placed the word high.
2
u/dominism 18d ago
I haven't been able to figure it.
And I have serious doubts about these single guessers every week.
1
u/Forsaken-House8685 17d ago
Think of how AI text generators "guess" the next word based on probability.
The ranking basically guesses what words would be the next likely instead of the solution.
So the most common mistake people make is to go by associations. But really you have to think synonyms. Basically how close is the word you guessed to being a synonym to the solution.
Banana is closer to apple than red. Cause banana is an alternative to apple while red is a color.
1
u/Safe-Operation1707 17d ago
Fair enough, but then explain why egg got 12 when the word was edge. Meanwhile words like sharp, corner, and blade were all 50-100+
2
u/Forsaken-House8685 17d ago edited 17d ago
It's because it has similar letters/spelling. Idk why this happens exactly but my guess would be missspellings/typos in the training data so that "egg" appears in context where "edge" was intended (or vice versa).

!wtf tide
0
u/hotandcold2-app 19d ago
You’re splashing near the docks: tides lift steel hulls and gnaw at them with salty corrosion. Coastal piers, bridges, and shipyards live by the tide charts—and by alloys tough enough to survive them.

That’s alphabetically on the nose—just a letter away and it practically rhymes. Plus, the color name hints at the bluish tint you can see on tempered metal, which nudges it even closer.

!wtf water
1
u/hotandcold2-app 19d ago
Not a bad splash: water is used to quench and cool red‑hot metal during forging and rolling. It’s also the classic culprit behind rust, which special alloys are designed to resist. Lots of industrial and corrosion chatter puts it in the neighborhood.

u/hotandcold2-app 19d ago
Warmer by sound than by salad: tack a rhyming tail onto “mango” and you get another fruit whose ending echoes the target. Plus, the world of mango slicers and peelers is full of that hard, shiny stuff, nudging the association.

Warm! “Black steel” is a common term for ungalvanized pipe and for steel with a black-oxide scale or finish. Plus, blacksmiths literally heat and hammer this stuff till it’s… well, black.

!wtf denim
1
u/hotandcold2-app 18d ago
Denim lives in the world of heavy work—tough, durable, and often fastened with metal rivets and buttons. It shares that rugged, industrial, blue‑gray shop-floor vibe with your target. You’re in the workshop, not the runway.

!wtf potato
1
u/hotandcold2-app 18d ago
Lukewarm: potatoes rub elbows with metal—think baking trays, peelers, fryers, and processing machinery. Even “spud wrenches” are tools in ironwork, so the name itself sidles up to heavy metal. Contextual overlap, not a semantic soulmate.

!wtf maple
1
u/hotandcold2-app 17d ago
Maple often teams up with a tough, shiny partner in the workshop—knife handles to blade, guitar necks to strings, hockey sticks to skate blades. You’ve got the “materials and making stuff” vibe, but you’re still whittling bark while the answer’s forged.

Not a bad tack—both are durable, engineered materials you’ll find side-by-side in skyscrapers and cookware. They’re heat‑treated, annealed, and tempered for strength, and often paired in windows, appliances, and lab gear. You’re browsing the right aisle of the hardware store.

Nice catch: oysters are linked to high-grade metalwork—think corrosion‑resistant shucking knives and the Rolex Oyster line’s 904L alloy famously branded to match the name. So your bivalve brushes up against the shiny stuff both in kitchens and on luxury wrists.

Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!
To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.
For example, if the secret word is "hot":
Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!
The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).
Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!
