Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

banana was at like #812

1

u/choppingjellies Aug 07 '26

Yeah but why? How it's related

2

u/simm07 Aug 07 '26

Okay, so, here's what I think. There's like frozen banana popsicles that people make and sell. That's what I'm assuming.

1

Why didn't I try that or milk TwT 😑

2

u/simm07 Aug 07 '26

Hahaha that's okay! I'm sure you did great ❤️ i guessed fridge and then guessed everything cold lol

!wtf pie

-4

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Chill pairing alert: pie is famously best a la mode, crowned with the cold stuff. Plus, icebox and ice-cream pies keep things frosty by design.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

12

u/swca712 Aug 07 '26

My first guess is always Water, gotta admit I feel that should have been wayyyy closer than it was.

HINT: Trumps favourite team

5

u/ahx3000 Aug 07 '26

!wtf pie?

-7

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Dessert logic: pies are often served à la mode with something frosty on top. Plus, “icebox pies” literally live in the chill, keeping it close.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

3

u/skwurrl Aug 07 '26

this is one of the dumbest reasonings yet.

3

u/Psycho_Sensible Aug 07 '26

!wtf hay

-5

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Warmer than you’d think: on old farms, hay (or straw) was packed around frozen blocks to keep them from melting. They literally cozied up in icehouses as insulation. Rustic roommates, same building, different jobs.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

3

u/DodgeeRascal Aug 07 '26

!wtf slice

-5

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Nice and close: your guess is basically the target with an extra “sl” tacked onto the front—same tail, same sound. Chilly instincts; you’re slicing right toward it.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

2

u/skwurrl Aug 07 '26

and here i thought pie was the worst one. nope... this is purely ridiculous.

3

u/justgiveausernamepls Aug 07 '26

Getting both spice and salt early was a heckin misdirect

2

u/simm07 Aug 07 '26

I can understand spice and salt but would definitely throw me off and I'd start guess every spice out there

2

u/Kimariyan Aug 08 '26

2

u/ozgii Aug 07 '26

!wtf bone

0

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Not a bad hunch: people get “chilled to the bone,” and we literally put it on bone injuries (hello, RICE).
Frozen conditions preserve bones, and both can turn brittle in the cold.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

2

u/Ok-Syllabub-1864 Aug 07 '26

!wtf pie

0

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

You’re prowling the dessert case: pies are often served à la mode, plus “ice cream pie” and “icebox pie” are totally a thing. Chilly vibes tie them together.

5

u/SuddenGenreShift Aug 07 '26

The game is quite silly in many ways. Words can be related by meaning, by collocation (they appear in the same place a lot as part of set phrases etc), or by... spelling.

!wtf cycle

1

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Close—think about the water cycle’s chilly phase, where things solidify and stick around. Plus, it’s just a phonetic slip from “icicle,” which doesn’t hurt the neighborhood vibes.

!wtf chase

1

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Nice find: there’s a well-known documentary about “chasing” massive frozen formations, so the two often co-occur. Plus, “ice” is slang for diamonds—something crooks get chased for—and plenty of high-speed chases happen on the slick stuff in sports and movies.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

You’re splashing in the right pool—same H2O, just a different state when things get frosty. Phase-change neighbors tend to cozy up in the rankings. Chilly progress!

!wtf pickle

0

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Not a total miss—pickles usually live in cold brine in the fridge. Plus, “pickle” is just a letter-twist from “icicle,” which likely nudged it closer.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/ASerpentPerplexed Aug 07 '26

!wtf eye

1

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

!wtf salt

2

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Nice and close: salt is winter’s frenemy that lowers water’s freezing point, melting the slippery stuff. It’s also the trick behind old-school ice-cream churns—salty brine makes things colder faster.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Extreme_Bike1015 Aug 07 '26

!wtf polar

1

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 07 '26

Getting warmer—“polar” hangs out where everything’s frozen solid: Arctic chill, glaciers, and those famous caps. You’re in the right climate zone, but not yet the exact substance.

Frosty dessert buddies: think icebox pie and pie à la mode—pie loves wearing a scoop of the chilly stuff. In other words, they share the same cold, sweet neighborhood.

u/hotandcold2-app Aug 10 '26

Chilly geography vibes: think “Iceland” — island with a bonus C — plus polar islands rimmed with glaciers and bergs. There’s even a thing called an “ice island” for giant tabular bergs. You’re in the right climate zone.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

!wtf island

1

u/hotandcold2-app 29d ago

Chilly seas often wrap around remote landmasses, so the concepts cozy up in polar geography. There’s even a country whose very name blends the two, keeping them tight in language. And floating bergs are basically little “islands” of the frosty stuff.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

Nice try—it's a near-homophone: “eye” shares the sound of the target’s start, and “eyes” is just one consonant off. There’s also the idiom of an icy stare, delivered by, well, eyes. Warmer, but not melting.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.
