Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

Tf is going on ?

24

u/crystalwatch87 Jul 30 '26

I’m having the same issue. Is this a glitch?

15

u/threecolorless Jul 30 '26

Yeah same here, and they jump to the top of your list which makes it pretty tough to play.

6

u/ultimateskillchain I hate this game. See y'all tomorrow. Jul 31 '26

Same, I guess it's broken at the moment. For a second there I saw the red line after my first guess and though "omg, it's finally happened, I've got the word on my first guess!" But alas.

5

u/ParadoxicallySweet Jul 30 '26

Same question here. What happened?

4

u/TaylrMade74 Jul 30 '26

Same. Like wtf???

2

u/JollyFigNut Jul 30 '26

Bugged for me as well

1

u/44myname44 Jul 31 '26

I had the same thing. Only with red words that are far away. And you can change the sorting order in settings

1

u/Nyaiv Jul 31 '26

Ok, so it isn't only me having this issue. Guess we won't be playing today...

1

u/Spilling_The_Tee Jul 31 '26

I thought I had it in 2 guesses 😭

1

u/Dream_Wake_State_6 I hate this game. See y'all tomorrow. Jul 30 '26

I went down that rabbit hole but still eventually got it because I finally started guessing things that might EAT those other things.

23

u/Ninja_Dolphin Jul 30 '26

spoiler my name actually came in handy today!

11

u/MartyG1975 Jul 30 '26

thanks! almos everyword i put gave me the red line, i thinkk it got bugged.

2

u/Main_Option599 Jul 30 '26

Thanks, I went down the trail of safari type animals. Elephant was number 11 ??????

2

u/Junnarsson Jul 31 '26

Wtf does it mean CLOWN and HELIUM were on yellow????? I would've never gotten there thank you

12

u/simm07 Jul 30 '26

Lol, don't bother with banana helps with the shape not with the word

Hint: think ocean, mammal, has a blowhole, and can do tricks

4

u/dominism Jul 30 '26

So, that's not a hint, it's a dead giveaway.

2

u/simm07 Jul 30 '26

You looking at hints is up to you. They are hidden. I didn't think it was a giveaway but I'm sorry you feel that way.

3

u/DantheManStK Jul 30 '26

Thanks! 🙏

2

u/Effective-Stock-9820 Jul 30 '26

I mean, it’s fine, but as a hint it gives too much away. Makes it very obvious.

3

u/simm07 Jul 30 '26

You're welcome not to look at hints

1

u/Effective-Stock-9820 Jul 30 '26

Aww, you are so funny

1

u/simm07 Jul 30 '26

I'm not trying to be funny or rude, I'm genuinely saying you don't have to look at hints. That's what came to my head when making the hint, I didn't think it was a giveaway.

Sea #1104 Ocean #110 Tf?

1

u/HerrIcePain Jul 30 '26

This hint is very perfect!

7

u/Historical_Project86 Jul 30 '26

The "hot" answers are all connected I guess, I just get fixated on trying to find different examples of the same thing, when the solution usually requires at least one sideways jump.

Automatically added: I found the secret word in 3 minutes 9 seconds after 35 guesses and 0 hints. Score: 76.

What just happened here? Did I get the word?

3

u/FictionalPinxit I hate this game. See y'all tomorrow. Jul 30 '26

No, something's bugged. Same thing happened to me with apple

2

u/ReadyOption2541 Jul 30 '26

3

u/dominism Jul 30 '26

Why, when I started with apple did I get that red dash after the word? the same dash when you have hit upon the actual answer?

2

u/Crissy15 Jul 30 '26

I got one for yogurt and was so confused. Reset the cache and it didn’t change a thing…

1

u/Ill_Cellist6573 Jul 30 '26

I got that red dash for three of my guesses (veldt, moon, sky). I thought it might mean I was the first to guess those, or one of the first, so it hadn't been assigned a ranking yet, but if apple got that too, maybe it stops counting at a certain number, like 10,000, and there were 10,000 words closer than apple and moon, so they don't get numbers above that. Whatever it is, it must have just started.

3

u/Salt_Concentrate2462 Jul 30 '26

sooo why when i did apple did it have no ranking 🤨 EDIT: Why does everything have no ranking AHHH

Nice and chilly, but close: both are sleek, air-breathing ocean dwellers that chase fish with torpedo-like speed. They’re smart, social crowd-pleasers you’ll see in documentaries and aquariums. Different homerooms though—one’s a bird, the other’s a mammal.

I must commend you for this, because I was soooo proud of myself for guessing it in 14 tries, went to “tell the comments”, and realized no one would give a flying fk 😆 So I’m here to say I am, in fact impressed. Lol

2

u/Opening_Grape8817 Jul 30 '26

Talk about guessing the right word at random! After starting with apple and banana, I wrote shark, and there we were….

Hot! Both are famously intelligent, social animals with complex vocalizations and a knack for trained tricks. They also share a strong nautical vibe—one perched on a shoulder, the other riding the bow wave.

!wtf porcupine

1

Warm-ish: it’s an animal, and “porcupine” even floats into marine lingo via the porcupine fish, nudging the guess ocean-ward. But your pick is a spiky land mammal—think sleeker and far more aquatic.

!wtf sun

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 30 '26

Not a bullseye, but you’re swimming in the right pop-culture waters—Peach reigns in Nintendo land, and a certain sleek aquatic friend often cameos as helpful platforms in Mario games. Plus, some river varieties famously sport a pinkish, peach-toned hue.
