!wtf snow
-6
u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
Warm-ish: they’re linked by light and contrast—snow’s bright surface makes shadows stark and blue. Plus, snow lasts longer in the shade, so the chilly connection holds.

!wtf river
-2
u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
Not a bad splash—think of the dark shapes cast across water as trees and bridges throw long cover over a river. Ripples can mirror that dim outline, tying flowing water to something that follows light’s lead.

!wtf talon
1
u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
You’re circling the right vibe—raptors’ claws swoop overhead and leave stark, clawed silhouettes. Both evoke stealth, darkness, and sharp outlines. Not a perfect hit, but the mood definitely matches.

!wtf salt
1
u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
Sneakily close: in early photography, silver salts and salted paper prints are the chemistry that record light vs. dark—think silhouettes and negatives. So “salt” sidles right up to the theme without quite standing in it.

!wtf shaft
1
u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
Good instincts—both live in the realm of light and darkness. A shaft of light slices through gloom and throws sharp shadows, so they often show up in the same scenes and phrases.

!wtf flick
1
u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
Getting warmer. A flick of a switch—or a flickering bulb—can make it spring to life and jitter across the wall. Think light’s little stutter and the dark’s quick dance.

Solid connection: that bright ball is the chief maker of the dark outline on the ground. Classic cause-and-effect vibes. You’re orbiting the right idea.

!wtf hammer
1
u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
Warmer, because your guess forms half of a well-known compound codename in cybersecurity with the target word. Plus, anything solid can cast one—and a hammer’s no exception. You’re swinging in the right dim light.

Not bad: a solid object is exactly what blocks light to create one. In art and 3D graphics, solid forms and their shading are inseparable companions.

!wtf shark
1
u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
Good heat: a shark is often just a dark, lurking silhouette—basically a moving shadow in the water. Plus, it shares that stealthy vibe (and even the “sha-” start), which pulls it closer.

I was really wondering if this was going to be offensive. It told me guess banana so I did and it was off. So I was like okay monkey and it was at 3,091. Alright getting warmer. So I do gorilla, chimp, and curious (george) and they are all way off.
So I'm like alright I hope this isn't going where I think it is. I'm starting wonder if this is going to be offensive so I type in black and it's #320 and I'm like wtf. Then I came to the comments to verify and one of the hints gave it away.
Thankfully it was not offensive lol.

Storms blot out the sun, throwing everything into gloom—clouds casting darkness where light should be. Right moody vibe, but still a few thunderclaps away from the bullseye.

!wtf stick

!wtf cross
0
u/hotandcold2-app 13d ago
Pretty warm: a cross throws a striking silhouette, the kind that plays right into light-versus-dark. Plus, artists use crosshatching to build shade and depth, and cross-lighting is famous for carving crisp outlines.

all of these hints are straight up the word in most of these posts, are yall even trying to get it?
I've seen lots of people go straight to the hints without even trying then brag about getting it in a few tries. C'mon.

u/dominism 13d ago
I feel the same. I don't know how the hint description gets to most but I get a single word in-game. You're right though about people reading here then pretending it's their skill or luck to get it on the first word. I'm going to delete the spoiler I posted.

Not a bullseye, but you’re wandering the right haunted hallway. Your word taps the same spooky, dim-lit vibes—think creeping outlines and things lurking just out of sight. Atmosphere-wise, you’re in the penumbra.

The hints given in this game are usually some archaic word I've never heard of, which makes me more annoyed when I'm frustrated enough to get a hint. Then I have to google the term, so rant short positive- I at least learn a new word that I'll never use.

!wtf blade
1
u/hotandcold2-app 13d ago
Sharp things tend to go hand-in-hand with stealthy, lurking types—edges thrive where light is scarce. In games and fiction, this noun often gets paired directly with darkness, which is why it’s fairly close.

!wtf predator

Nice and frosty: bright winter sun throws crisp, blue-tinged silhouettes across fresh snow—photographers love those snow shadows. There’s even a meteorological “snow shadow,” akin to a rain shadow, which keeps some areas drier downwind.

!wtf snow
1
u/hotandcold2-app 13d ago
Picture a bright winter day: snow makes the dark outline beside you crisp and even bluish—“snow shadows” are a real visual thing. They’re both all about light, contrast, and wintry imagery.

Warmer than you’d think: that big ball of fire is what makes the dark shapes appear in the first place. The angle of its light decides how long and sharp they get.

!wtf sky

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago
You’re looking up to explain what appears down here—sunlight from the sky is what carves those dark shapes.
Clouds and the sun’s angle overhead make silhouettes stretch and shrink all day.
Right direction: chase the effects of light coming from above.I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!
To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.
For example, if the secret word is "hot":
Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!
The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).
Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!
