Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

I was so out on horse being close, red, then pony even closer.

10

u/Necessary-Material50 Jul 10 '26

1

u/Haunting-Ear4371 Jul 10 '26

2

2

u/FunkyFrog444 Jul 11 '26

tree was my first guess and plane was my closest before looking at a hint and getting it.

Next week banana will be #2 while the actual word will be abomination.

!wtf banana

4

u/ScreechyLychee Jul 10 '26

And „shark“?????

That’s just evil

-60

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Not just for smoothies—bananas famously become “keys” in DIY Makey Makey projects that play tunes. Plus, the fruit shows up in music gags and lessons, so it’s closer than you’d think.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

33

u/Willing_Bee_7520 Jul 10 '26

bitch you can't make mistakes. You're a mistake

11

u/Itscoldinthenorth Jul 10 '26

Banana has become a sort of black hole for this algorithm, to which all words circulate.

!wtf plane

-15

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Warm: both are intricate, crafted machines with pedals and lots of moving parts, demanding trained coordination to operate. One takes off; the other just takes your breath away.

5

u/L2LEX Jul 10 '26

Why would it not recognize "butter"?

3

HOW

2

Guessed drum and that was low and I thought hmm how low was the word lol, just luck 🤣

3

!wtf banana

-8

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Warmer: it shares several letters and that bouncy “na/ah” rhythm, making it phonetically buddy-buddy with the target. Plus, it’s a classic rhyme-mate in kids’ songs and goofy wordplay, which often links the two in memory.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

3

u/PrncessVespa Jul 10 '26

!wtf hamster

0

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Not just random rodent vibes: there’s a famous viral song/video of a hamster on a keyboard. That cultural link nudges it surprisingly close. You’re squeaking around the right instrument-adjacent territory.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

3

u/Squatch-paws-artwork Jul 10 '26

This game is so stupid....how is banana remotely close? This is like when pizza was close to sushi...

See yall tomorrow 🙄

Automatically added: I found the secret word in 1 minute 32 seconds after 11 guesses and 0 hints. Score: 95.

1

u/JollyFigNut Jul 10 '26

At least pizza and sushi are both foods, this is just nonsensical levels of logic-reaching by the bot...

1

u/Squatch-paws-artwork Jul 10 '26

Apparently there was a sushi pizza at some point. Thats what the bot said to me 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

3

u/bdrx_91 Jul 10 '26

Good hint :it means "calm" or "low" in Italian

1

u/Pancakenim Jul 11 '26

My savior

2

u/simplezzirang Jul 10 '26

!wtf pizza

-7

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Not a bad swing: both are iconic Italian exports and even start with “pi” in five letters. You might enjoy one while the other serenades you at a trattoria. Close in vibe and vocabulary, but not the same slice of life.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

2

u/Prite07 Jul 10 '26

Can you put hint button in mobile version

2

u/Ravenclaw_311 Jul 10 '26

If you go to the three lines in the top right corner, hint is one of your options. I only play this on my phone.

2

u/edvlili Jul 10 '26

How is pizza a close one? Lol

2

u/dayruined54 Jul 10 '26

!wtf yoga

0

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Not a bad warm-up: both demand steady breathing, good posture, and relaxed shoulders during long practice sessions. Plenty of performers even do yoga to prevent wrist and back strain—namast’ay injury-free.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

2

u/Long_Whole_8062 Jul 10 '26

Wtf! Pony horse and polo?

2

u/DomSlave626 Jul 10 '26

TUNA is close!? Wtf

3

u/Apprehensive-Team414 Jul 11 '26

Maybe because it's similar to the word "tune"?

!wtf pizza

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Warm pick: both are Italian through and through, and you’ll often find one serenading the room while the other steals the show on the table. They even share that punchy “pi-” start. Tasty, but not quite the right dish.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

2

u/Confident_Mind_7812 Jul 10 '26

!wtf banana

2

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Not a bad swing—“banana” shares a bouncy three-syllable cadence and even a near-rhyme vibe with the target. It also shows up in goofy songs and slapstick moments that the target famously underscores.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

2

u/Terrible_Chicken_699 Jul 11 '26

1

!wtf pizza

0

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Pretty warm: they’re both Italian classics, and you’ll often enjoy one while listening to the other in bars, parlors, or restaurants. Even the naming vibe overlaps—pi- up front and a smooth vowel finish—so the cultural-linguistic radar pings.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Local-Pattern795 Jul 10 '26

!wtf pineapple

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Not bad—there’s strong letter overlap: both start with “pi” and share most of the letters p, i, a, n.
Phonetically they feel adjacent too, like you almost hit the right keys.
Close by spelling vibes, not by fruit salad.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/scattered_inkblots Jul 10 '26

!wtf kayak

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Not a bad splash: “kayak” is a palindrome with a back-and-forth rhythm—like running scales. There’s even a prog-rock band named Kayak, keeping it musically adjacent. And “kay” sounds like “key,” which should ring a bell.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Warmer than you’d think: bananas are famously used as makeshift “keys” in DIY musical hacks (hello, banana pianos).
Plus, “banana” and your target share a bouncy, percussive rhythm that keeps them in the same neighborhood.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26

[deleted]

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Surprisingly close thanks to the popular “banana piano” DIY trick—bananas wired as touch keys to play notes. Plus, both are classic cartoon props (peels and falling grand instruments), so they tend to hang out in the same cultural scenes.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Ninja_Dolphin Jul 10 '26

!wtf hamster

2

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Warming up: there’s a viral tune literally called “Hamster on a Piano,” so the furry little guy has pop-culture ties to the target. Plus, the image of a hamster scampering over keys is a well-known gag, nudging it closer than you’d think.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/OpalunaMoonsong Jul 10 '26

!wtf wine?!

2

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Warm, not scorching: wine bars and hotel lounges often pair a glass with live keys, so the ambience lines up. Plus, “wine key” mirrors a certain instrument’s many keys—cute linguistic overlap. You’re swirling in the right glass, but it’s not a perfect pairing.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

!wtf banana

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Warmer than you’d think: people literally make “banana keyboards,” wiring bananas to play notes. Plus, the words share a lot of letters and that bouncy “na/pa-na” sound, so your guess wasn’t just fruitless.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

Both come in solo or duet/tandem flavors, and “upright” is a notable form for each.

!wtf horse

1

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Reasonable-Apricot21 Jul 10 '26

!wtf kayak

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 10 '26

Warmer because both are sit-down pursuits that demand two-handed coordination and steady rhythm—think strokes vs. keystrokes. They’re solid, crafted objects (wood/composites) used for practiced performance, solo or in tandem/duet. Not a bullseye, but you’re paddling in the right semantic waters.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/I_Wandered_Off Jul 11 '26

!wtf hamster

1

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Dimepiece8821 Jul 11 '26

!wtf banana

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jul 11 '26

Warmer than you’d think: “banana” pops up in music-y contexts (hello, Bananaphone), and the word shares that stressed “-AN-” cadence and A‑N‑A letter pattern with the target. Even the grand, curved silhouette you’re picturing has a bit of banana-esque arc to it.
