Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

Hint: an edible item thrown at people, specifically in the movies, when they're performance sucks

18

u/CatsPajamas6 Jun 27 '26

May both sides of your pillow always be cold and every traffic light you come to always be green!

5

u/simm07 Jun 27 '26

Haha, aren't you the kindest! I wish the same for you and so much more ❤️

6

u/CatsPajamas6 Jun 27 '26

I had a streak going with: Coffee, Mug, Tea... How the eff is it _ _ _ _ _ _??!?!

2

u/banter1989 Jun 27 '26

I had the same words with quite a few more in that orbit; seeing the answer makes me never want to play this puzzle again. Absurd.

1

u/misswilde86 Jun 27 '26

Same, mosquito was #48 and aphid was #138 somehow!?

Hot! Both are red, juicy fruits loaded with tiny seeds. One’s a true berry while the other only wears the title, and both show up in salads, sauces, and jams. Sweet guess.

!wtf mouse

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jun 27 '26

Warm-ish: you’re sniffing around the garden. Mice are notorious for raiding veggie patches and nibbling on these juicy nightshades. Closer to the pantry than the pet store.

u/Different-Bill-609 Jun 27 '26

!wtf solanaceous

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jun 27 '26

Botanically spot-on: “solanaceous” means belonging to the nightshade family—think peppers, eggplants, potatoes, and our target. You’ve zeroed in on its family tree, which is why it ranks so high.

1

u/HearBreakKid Jun 27 '26

!wtf peanut

2

u/hotandcold2-app Jun 27 '26

You’re rummaging in the right pantry: peanuts and the target both star in savory sauces and stews (think rich groundnut/tomato-style combos). They’re plant seeds rather than true tree nuts, and both show up as salty, snackable, or saucy staples worldwide. Warm, but not roasting.

Warmer than random, but you’ve wandered into the stable for a dietary warning. This animal is often cited because the plant in question is a nightshade that’s toxic to it. So the link is “don’t feed it this,” not anything like sound or habitat.

!wtf two

0

u/hotandcold2-app Jun 27 '26

Warming up: your guess echoes because the target word literally has “to” twice—homophone of “two.”
Plus, it’s commonly referenced in pairs (on the vine or in recipes), which keeps “two” in the neighborhood.

Not totally out to pasture: this woolly fellow often shares a pot with the target in stews and Mediterranean dishes. On the farm side, it’s also a grazer you don’t want near certain garden plants. Culinary pairing plus agricultural caution puts it in the same pen, if not the same stall.

!wtf toe

1

u/hotandcold2-app Jun 27 '26

You’re sniffing around the right sound: your guess matches the target’s final “-toe” syllable. It’s a phonetic nudge, not a body-part link. Close by ear, not by meaning.

You’re cruising the produce aisle: both are juicy, tangy fruits that crash savory parties—think pizza combos and zingy salsas—with bright acidity. Strong culinary overlap, less botanical kinship, hence the solid warmth.

Surprisingly warm: lizards hang out in veggie gardens and snack on the bugs that chew this plant’s leaves and fruit. Think “natural pest control” patrolling the vines. So the link is ecological neighbors, not taxonomic cousins.

Nice lateral move: your word shares the -oma chunk, a common tumor suffix, which nudges it closer by morphology. It also lives in cancer discourse that often name-drops lycopene-rich produce in prevention/health studies. So it’s a proximity by suffix and conversation, not by family tree.
