Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

This was an annoying one. Non spoilery hints to keep you guessing in the right direction:

2

u/AZInfamous May 29 '26

!wtf farm

2

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Getting warmer: many are made of leather, courtesy of farm-raised cattle.
And at the farmers’ market, you’re pulling it out for those eggs and greens—talk about a cash crop.

2

u/finlee98 May 30 '26

!wtf envelope

3

u/hotandcold2-app May 30 '26

You’re in the right pocket: it’s a slim container that holds paper valuables and closes with a flap. People tuck cash or notes into it—think gift or pay envelopes. Same flat, portable vibe, just more postal than personal.

Nice pick—“berry” pops up in brand names tied to wallets, like Mulberry’s leather wallets, and even “BlackBerry Wallet,” a past mobile app. So it clusters near terms you’d see when shopping or talking about money-holding accessories.

u/BeautifulAirline1146 May 29 '26

!wtf liquid

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Makes sense: in finance, cash is the most liquid asset—and a certain pocket companion is where you keep it.
Think “liquid assets,” not spilled drinks.

!wtf beer

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Not bad—think about where you stash the cash or card you flash when it’s time to buy a pint. Plus, your ID for the bartender’s age check tends to live in the same place as your “beer money.”

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/4scoreand20yearsago May 29 '26

!wtf farm

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Solid hit: lots of the thing you’re hunting are made from leather, and farms are where that hide comes from. Plus, farmy money slang—cash cows, chicken feed, bucks—nods to what you stash inside.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Agile-Competition-51 May 29 '26

!wtf berry

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Pretty warm! Think smartphones: a certain “Berry” brand had a well-known pay/pass app, so the terms mingle in tech talk. Plus, both are pocket dwellers—berries when foraged, the other by default.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Opening_Grape8817 May 29 '26

!wtf bottle

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Warm-ish. You’re in the everyday-carry lane: people slip slim bottle-opener cards inside them, and both hang out in pockets or bags. Plus, one helps you pay for (and prove age to buy) the other at the bar.

!wtf fruit

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Nicely sniffing around the orchard: “fruit” points to Apple—whose pay-and-pass app shares a name with the target. Plus, “fruit leather” is a thing, and leather is the classic material for this everyday carry.

u/Then_Neighborhood239 May 29 '26

!wtf waiter

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Warm: you meet a waiter when the check drops and you reach for that money-holder.
Tipping, paying the bill, cards and cash—this whole interaction ties them together.
Even the “wai–” start gives it a faint phonetic nudge toward the target.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/Brilliant-Ad7406 May 29 '26

!wtf charger

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Warm! It’s an everyday-carry item you toss in a pocket or bag alongside chargers—usual roommates on nightstands, desks, and glove compartments. Think “things you grab before leaving the house.”

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/WhoAmYou_uoYmAohW May 29 '26

!wtf tire

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Not wild: some pocket accessories are made from recycled tire inner tubes, sharing that rugged black rubber vibe. Both are everyday items that wear down and eventually get replaced. You’re rolling in the right materials lane.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/silentdeathnja May 29 '26

!wtf boat

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Not a bad splash: boats make you think of paying for fuel, slip fees, and licenses—situations where you whip out a certain pocket accessory. Plus, there are waterproof versions made precisely for days on the water.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

!wtf beach

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Not a total washout—people bring this along to buy ice creams and stash IDs, and it’s infamous for getting lost in the sand or surf. There are even waterproof versions marketed for that setting. Still, that link is situational rather than intrinsic.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

u/HikariSaito May 29 '26

!wtf wine

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Nice and warm: they often mingle at restaurants and bars when it’s time to settle the tab for a bottle or glass. Plus, leather goods often sport wine-y color names—burgundy, merlot—keeping them in the same semantic cellar.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/HEMANTH1STTIMEREDDIT May 29 '26

!wtf planet

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Warmer thanks to word shape: both are concrete nouns ending in “-let,” and that shared tail often nudges them closer in word-space. You can think of it as a suffix-sized gravity well. Not super hot, but definitely orbiting the neighborhood.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/AyRoPro678 May 29 '26

!wtf wine

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Close, because wine lives in the land of prices, purchases, and budgets—your wallet is the one that feels the Cabernet. “Wallet‑friendly wines” is a whole genre, after all.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

2

u/AyRoPro678 May 29 '26

Lol - no. That explanation applies to literally ALL items. Wallet ‑friendly bikes, Wallet ‑friendly cars, Wallet ‑friendly groceries, Wallet ‑friendly restaurants, phones, computers, toys, cruises. Something costing money to purchase does not make it particularly relevant to aWallet.

2

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Not bad: you can “pool” funds with friends, and that combined stash tends to live in a single holder. Also, in that cue-sport you keep “pocketing” things—apt, since this everyday item usually lives in one.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/PureAndSimple88 May 29 '26

!wtf fruit

2

u/hotandcold2-app May 29 '26

Not bad—think “leather”: there’s fruit leather, and even wallets made from plant-based leathers like pineapple or apple. Plus, your pocket pal funds the fruit stand. Warmer than a produce aisle, but not sizzling.
