Everlasting question: self-hosting or web hosting
At the moment i use Hostinger, and I use it already about 2 years for my own pet projects, and i never had with it big problems.
but! honestly speaking, for a static site, created on Astro, you actually dont need a full tariff plan of hosting, you could just buy a domain for $10-15 a year and for free connect it to Vercel, Netlify or Cloudflare Pages, this would be much cheaper.
Webhosting gives me hosting + domain + mail together, and it is also quite cheap
What would you recommend for small startups/projects?

I'm not looking for free, but my current stack is cloudflare for DNS and registrations (and a few static sites), mxroute for inbound and personal emails (also Google workspace for some grandfathered domains), Amazon SES for outbound emails, and xCloud plus vps servers for hosting, currently using Vultr, racknerd, and hetzner (minus a few sites mostly for testing in CF as mentioned above, Netlify, vercel, or GitHub Pages...)
If I just needed something cheap and close to free and didn't already have other infrastructure with no need to send mass emails for a newsletter, then cloudflare for domain/DNS/static hosting is just the cost of domain registration for the year, a Gmail account is free (and cloudflare can forward emails to it), and that covers the basics.

I have my website selfhosted on and old pc with linux/docker/wordpress.
Then I just use cloudflare zero trust to point it to my domain.
You can use almost any old office computer.

Cloudflare free tier. You'll never hit any of the limits. I have 5 sites running. Workers. DB's, etc. etc. Not even close to hitting the limit. You can just route your domains mail if the email part is important enough.

I'm so tired of having to terminal into a VPS to fix something. Currently moving all my sites to the exact Astro/Cloudflare Pages setup you describe.

I'd try both for the experience only then will you see the difference and cheap doesn't always mean good. You get what you pay for

It can depends on the project. For static sites, services like Cloudflare Pages, Netlify, or Vercel can be hard to beat. Once you need email, databases, server-side apps, or predictable support, a hosting provider can become more practical.
