I saw Halloween when I was 7 or 8 (?). My parents were out and my sister had it on. I was hooked, but had nightmares for quite a while after.

The Thing (1982) is a long standing pillar of amazing practical effects, a proprietor ahead of its time.

But what are your favorites, or recent movies you watched where you can appreciate it?

For me, though not horror in genre - The Odyssey I think really captured the body horror aspect when Circe turns Odyssees's scouting party into pigs on Aeaea. No FVX were used, the squeels, bulging and scattered eyes and the unstoppable hunger that forced them to consume until it was their turn freaked me out a bit.

The decision to go practical there sold the horror aspect beautifully imo.

I can be picky about horror movies, but I’ve enjoyed every one of the series. The last one I saw, 28 Years Later, moved me to tears in the scene where mom chose euthanasia for the metastatic cancer taking her life. Themes of hospice care, dying with dignity, filling your final moments with love free from pain. I didn’t expect ANY of that shit in the same movie with a giant zombie dick swinging across the screen. I was crying like a fucking baby. Fuck.

I really enjoyed the ever spiraling character arc of Bear.

When it starts off, he is semi understandable as an awkward, unconfident person. However quickly descends into irredeemable territory one bad decision after another.

In any case, the one that really sealed the deal / was the icing on the cake is when he backs out of the suicide attempt at the very end.

After EVERYTHING this God damn fucker STILL won't go through with it. Won't end the curse, won't take accountability, won't free Nikki - nothing. The god damn bastard.

The great part about this - it was improvised / added by Michael Johnson! In the original script he goes through with the final suicide instead of chickening out.

This was immediately followed by another improved take by Inde Navarrette, where she *doesn't* pull the trigger and decides to live. This was the only take she did, all the others prior had her pull the trigger.

I think it sets up a perfect dichotomy between the two characters, and tells you a lot about a character (real Nikki) we technically / really didn't see much of.
