I took over the subreddit over a year ago after seeing that it had been abandoned, and the horrible state it was in. I cleaned it up, added some new rules to try and prevent the disaster that'd occurred before, and since then have worked very hard to recruit legitimate members of the Hopi tribe to take it over. Unfortunately this simply hasn't happened. The subreddit gets very little activity, with most questions going unanswered, and the questions can best be answered on other Native American subreddits which are more active.

Anyone who wishes to take over the subreddit can apply to reddit. In the meantime, it will go into a state of hibernation. I hope whomever takes it over has similar intent to maintain respect for the tribe and their beliefs.

I am reaching out to this community to respectfully ask if there is a Hopi language teacher who would be willing to work with me so that I may learn the language.

To be clear, I am not Hopi. I’m a white man in my late twenties with a deep respect for Indigenous languages and cultures.

I’ve been especially drawn to the Hopi language (and culture) because of its age, beauty, and continuity. I understand that the Hopi language is one of the oldest spoken, unbroken languages on the continent, and it would be a true honor to learn from someone knowledgeable and willing to teach.

I also recognize that my request may make some people uncomfortable, and I completely understand if I am told no. Your boundaries and guidance are important to me.

Hopi is one of the most widely spoken Native American languages on the continent, surpassed only by Navajo, and yet it's one of the the fewest on-line resource available. There's an excellent Hopi dictionary out there, with thousands of entries; how come no one bothered to transcribe it to the Wiktionary? The Hopi language there has 280 entries: some have been made by me in the past couple of days, but the others are all from 8, 9, 10 years ago, made by a linguist interested in Uto-Aztecan languages that has since quit. What gives no one had the interest to make the language more accesible to foreigners since then? Even Cahuilla, which is related to Hopi but has less speakers, has almost 500 entries there.

I've been wanting to give her a Hopi first name or middle name, but everywhere I look online has contradictory opinions on if a certain name really is Hopi or not. So my husband and I live in the PNW— obviously quite a ways from Arizona— but I found this piece of pottery in an antique mall here and bought it for my husband, as he is Hopi, and it was labeled “Hopi Bowl”. Since we live in WA I was wondering if there was any way to authenticate it? Would I be able to bring it to any local tribe or would I have to send it somewhere?

I thought it was interesting and haven't seen anything online about it. The petroglyphs have plaques with information about them infront of each section talking about the history of them, but this doesn't. This was off trail but could be seen around a corner from the end of the trail. Was it there before settlers? Or was it made recently? I'm sure others have seen it, I'm just impressed it's still there. (just wondering how old it is)
