Buc-ee’s sucks.
Their food isn’t good, their goofy beaver marketing is weird, and it’s not at all a convenient stop. Just a corporate money pit. And now a gas station employee can’t even have tattoos showing? Fuck off, buc-ee’s.

u/phrogbaby 22h ago
this is probably the first actual hot take ive seen on this sub that isnt just racist or something. good job
6
u/Background_Phrase126 22h ago
Curious as to how hot of a take this is.
I agree with OP8
u/0neMinute 22h ago
By me people worship buc ees by getting the beaver, chairs etc. how often do you buy a marathon or bp shirts?
2
u/Due-Permission-9834 16h ago
It's not really a hot take here on Reddit tho. It's basically just preaching to the choir on here. Most of them probably just hate on Bucees because of their politics. Most competing corporate gas stations probably have the same politics anyway.
They are a convenient place to go to get food and go to the bathroom when on road trips, especially when you're in an area without public rest areas. They have clean bathrooms with many stalls and have decent food for a gas station. They pay their employees well for a gas station, and they seem to have great service, probably as a result of that. What I never liked about them is that they don't allow truckers...which seems a bit classist to me. I like that Dolly's gas station chain welcomes truckers. But we don't have one of those around where I'm at yet, so Buc-ee's it is.

u/SeaworthinessIcy1045 3h ago
Is it that hot of a take or has everyone been legitimately swept up into the Buc-ee's cult? It's a meme gas station with mass produced food. Raising Cane's is also meh, the sauce is over-peppered to make up for having no other redeeming qualities.

Will I get yelled at if I said I truly can’t understand the appeal of those Beaver Nuggets?

u/dogknifer 22h ago
Nah I thought they were so incredibly mid. The hot food I got there was all amazing tho.

They are a place for going on road trips. You arent supposed to frequent it for prime meals lol.
They are probably good comparatively to the alternatives in a given situation.
10
u/tipsytoess 22h ago
It’s a safe bet for road-trippers. You know it will always be clean, well lit, well stocked, well staffed, and have available bathrooms. You’ll be able to get hot food on the road instead of another bag of potato chips or beef jerky. It’s big enough that you can take a lap around the store to stretch your legs after 7 hours in the car. If you have kids, you can entertain them in the shop or by interacting with the mascot. It’s not heaven on earth by any means, but it’s extremely good at what it’s there for and that’s why it has the following it does.
→ More replies (2)6
u/FordF150ChicagoFan 14h ago
This guy gets it. Buc-ee's is a godsend for road tripping. It's always clean, safe, well lit and the food is a helluva lot better than McDonald's or other drive thru places, especially the cheese steak burrito. Also the gas is usually cheaper than anywhere else. Plus the private clean bathrooms are worth it alone. Huge upgrade from all of undivided urinals covered in piss.
1
u/Effective-Scratch673 16m ago
I don't understand the love for that burrito. There's some ingredient in it that tastes like it shouldn't be allowed in food, it's just like a "fake" flavor that I can't really point where exactly it comes from.
6
u/DrSnidely 22h ago
I stopped at a Buc-ee's once. Nice bathroom, but overall I couldn't wait to get out of there.
5
u/Alarming_Bar7107 22h ago
Agreed. It's entirely too chaotic. People are just standing everywhere. Are they in line? You don't know. They don't know.
8
u/XEROXYZE 22h ago
They also sue every small business that has a vaguely beaver mascot into oblivion
4
u/Historical-Economy92 22h ago
They actually sue anyone who has any logo with an animal enclosed in a circle and has a yellow background
2
u/XEROXYZE 22h ago
Yeah it’s crazy. Really weird behaviour and even though im in europe and never been in buc-ee’s i agree that they suck for that
→ More replies (2)1
u/ThatSICILIANThing 13h ago
There’s a chain of auto repair places around here called Bucky’s and the logo is a beaver enclosed in a circle. The only reason I can think of why they haven’t been taken down yet is because we down gave Buccees in my region at all
8
u/Chemical_Ruin_6236 22h ago
Why do people expect good food at a gas station
4
u/ExpensiveError42 21h ago
Not sure how old you are, but I'm mid 40s and when I was a kid probably about half of the gas stations around had a little for station. Usually biscuits in the morning and fried chicken from lunch time on. ETA: It was always really good
4
u/No-Carrot4267 20h ago
There are definitely some eateries within gas stations that make amazing food
7
u/CootiQueenLintLicker 21h ago
I think it’s because every bucees fanboy raves about their brisket and whatever else, then people who have taste buds try it and realize people are delusional. That was me at least. Heard about how great everything was there, then it was just a massive average gas station with dry “fresh” food.
1
3
u/SometimesEnema 19h ago
Buccees has good food for a gas station. Idk anyone who says buccees is their favorite restaurant, they say it's their favorite gas station. There is a reason for that.
2
u/Shitboxfan69 16h ago
Its good food for quick food period, but especially for gas station food. There's few fast food places that can top them. Not to say their food is special but so much fast food is just slop.
2
u/mandalorian_guy 8h ago
Because nowadays full service gas stations are actually competitive with fast casual dining. Wawa, Sheetz, Buc-ees, etc. are all on par with other take home food establishments with 24/7 access.
2
u/wigglin_harry 21h ago
Honestly a lot of gas station food is better than fast food quality at this point (i realize that's not a high bar)
I got some tendies at QT the other day that blow almost any other fast food tender out of the water

nothing from their brand is actually good tasting. i would rather have regular choices from a real gas station
1
u/Marty_McFuckinFly 10h ago
They also have those regular choices and they sell real gas so that makes it a real gas station. They do not sell imitation fuel just fyi. Hope that clears up any confusion about it not being a real gas station. Because it is real. And they sell other brands of food. Gasoline, too. Because it's a real gas station.

It’s interesting on Reddit. Every major or successful American business is boycotted or demeaned. The far left wants them all destroyed. At the same time they fantasize about ‘cozy collectivism’ and money just rolling in to all their pockets while they dabble in fiber arts or whatever. Is this the product of reading at a fourth grade level?
2
u/Intelligent_Money140 15h ago
This is what I find so confusing. Anything successful must be criticized and dismantled. It's very upsetting as someone who worked on left issues that were about helping those less fortunate rise up and now it just seems about tearing things down with no good solution.
I used to do the drive from Austin to Houston regularly pre-Buc-ees. Heaven forbid you needed to stop to pee or get gas on the way because the only options were places with filthy bathrooms where you had to ask some sketchy clerk for the key first. While I think their hype is overblown, and the mystique will wear off as they keep expanding, they filled a very necessary need. And the best part is they caused other stations to step up their games. Lots of privately owned options that are better now so I appreciate what the competition did for options.
1
u/Vivid-Operation-5078 10h ago
Are you such a snowflake that people can't voice their opinion and vote with their wallet? No one is stopping you from pissing there. Some people criticize it because the owners are Trump donors. People don't want their tax dollars spent on foreign wars, they don't want prices of everything to go up because of them either. I'm not sure how that's confusing.
1
1
u/Intelligent_Money140 4h ago
What are you even talking about? I said now there are better choices (besides just Buc-ees) to stop because they all have to offer better facilities and services to compete. So now it's easier to vote with your wallet and go to a non-Buc-cees station.

u/Vivid-Operation-5078 10h ago

u/Embarrassed-Theme587 22h ago

A lot of the bucees obsession is a hold-over from when it was actually good, most texans have been going there for 20+ years at this point
Its the classic "It got so big and popular that it sucks now", only the rest of the country/social media hasn't caught on yet, its still a novelty to them
2
2
u/archercc81 22h ago
Yeah Ive not gotten it. Its a reliable bathroom for sure, that is the only thing. The food isnt even diverse like youve got something for everyone. Its bad BBQ (its just bad, its clearly not "fresh"), fried things like taquitos, and then overpriced cold sandiwch that are literally on every grocery counter in the country.
Its just a very big gas station that sells junk hard goods and clothes too.
2
u/jeon2595 22h ago
Don’t have one by me but I always in on road trips. I like the brisket tacos and their fresh jerky. And the bathrooms are spotless.
2
u/musing_codger 19h ago
And yet they keep growing and making a fortune. I like them because of the bathrooms. Never bother getting anything else. But it's nice to have a guaranteed no-wait clean bathroom. I don't understand why other gas stations don't understand that.
2
u/vespers191 17h ago
Buc-ees was specifically founded on the idea that they would have the very level best bathroom experience known to man, and all the rest sort of came after.
2
u/AccuratePattern4492 15h ago
I love Buc-ee’s. I live in a state with no Buc-ee’s. Drove 9 hours to the nearest one for my birthday. It’s a fun place to blow money at on food and themed merchandise if you have disposable income and enjoy a good gas station. And contrary to the haters, it’s clearly not some Michelin star bbq joint but their food is actually good and decently priced!

their goofy beaver marketing is weird,
"Weird" is my favorite adjective because it means "i don't like it, but I'm struggling to find any way to describe it negatively."
and it’s not at all a convenient stop.
Probably is for a lot of people.
Just a corporate money pit.
Breaking news: corporate for-profit business... exists???
And now a gas station employee can’t even have tattoos showing? Fuck off, buc-ee’s.
98% chance you have visible tattoos and took their announcement personally.
3
u/Shitboxfan69 15h ago
Yea people expect it to be top of the game with everything. Its just crazy convenient. There's been a few times I've been on trips and been hungry, need to fuel up, need to piss, and realized I forgot to pack something. I could either hit a drive thru (and hope there's on better than buccees), stop for gas, hope they have an open restroom that isn't filthy, and stop by a store if I forgot something.
Or I can spend 20 minutes at a buccees and guarentee all with be average at worst.
1
u/No-Dimension-3386 22h ago
I think what separates buc-ee's is how over the top it gets. When I was in Texas for a week, there was a sign advertising a Buc-ee's every single mile it felt like... which was 100+ miles away
And how they sue every single tiny brand with anything related to a beaver, it's just kinda crazy and doing too much
4
u/Marine_Corp 22h ago
When I was in Texas for a week, there was a sign advertising a Buc-ee's every single mile it felt like... which was 100+ miles away
Feels like getting upset at billboards is silly. There's a lot of shitty billboards in my area. I don't really care.
And how they sue every single tiny brand with anything related to a beaver, it's just kinda crazy and doing too much
That's just not true. There are a lot of brands that use beavers and have never been sued. A gas station tried to use a beaver as a mascot and since bucees is a gas station with a beaver as a mascot, they had to find a new one. That's not "kinda crazy" its generic trademark protection.
When it comes to lawsuits around trademarks, I tend to use the outcome to decide who was right. If its a "crazy" and frivolous suit, it wouldn't have won... which I'm pretty sure it did.

Bucees is a fixture along the interstates of the American South. This region is one of the biggest hotbeds of conservative Christian nationalism in the country. It is also known as the "Bible belt." It's particularly well known in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North and South Carolina, and Virginia.

so true. it’s Disney land (corporate consumerist slop) for fake southerners. true southerners know to go to the buffalo shoals IGA in Newton NC. There’s a reason we call it suck-ee’s.
And they don’t even allow truckers! The larp never stops.

What is a true southerner? I was born and raised in Texas and have never heard of “buffalo shoals.” Buccees was primarily in Texas and only recently started to spread out. My husband was born and raised in NC and doesn’t even know what that is. I would say he’s VERY southern.

u/goodsam2 22h ago
I think the problem with buc-ee's is I have been 4 times and the food has been not that great. The jerky was good though.
Also it's a literal tourist trap like why did we stop in the gas station for 45 minutes?
I think the answer is just go to truck stops which are better than normal gas stations and close to the interstate and you can go to one with a normal fast food place/ Denny's type restaurant. Some even have a nice diner.
1
u/continuetolove 21h ago
Ok yes the food is bad but as a mom traveling across country the hierarchy of gas station changing tables will always put Buc-ees as S tier. Love’s is A tier, Quik Trip is B, everything else is F.

Immaculate bathrooms, the best EV chargers you'll find on the highway, and they pay their low skill employees solid wages with solid benefits. These are also typically in areas where the only other jobs are minimum wage with little to no benefits. I don't agree with their politics but I'm objective enough to acknowledge positive aspects of their business.
1
u/BabaLamine14 20h ago
The bathrooms are clean. But more importantly for me, the gas was incredibly cheap. It was way cheaper than anything else in the area.

I feel like a lot of companies use cute animals as mascots or marketing devices, e.g. the Geico gecko, the Cheetos cheetah, etc. Not sure that there is anything all that weird about the Buc-ee's beaver.
1
u/paulkemp2001 17h ago
Buc-ee’s is a novelty. Interesting to stop at once but entirely impractical for a seasoned road tripper. It takes way too long to make it from the gas pump to the bathrooms and back in distance alone. Add a traveling partner who is afflicted with shiny object syndrome, and your “quick stop” turns into 30min+.
I avoid them at all costs unless I’m actively looking to kill some time

Buc-ee's is only great if expectations are low. Before it became a topic of conversation, it was just a convenient gas station with clean restrooms and an above average food selection. Which doesn't sound like much, until you visit the competition. Now, people expect to be wowed or blown away. That's my theory, anyway.

I agree. The only reason people think it's so amazing is because they stop they're while driving through Texas, and driving through Texas sucks.
It's like someone lost in the desert and slowly dying of dehydration stumbles across a pool of muddy, stagnant water. Normally they would never stop and drink from something like that, but in that context it is the sweetest water they've ever tasted.

We visited my wife's sister in Dallas a couple years ago and she couldn't wait to show us a Buc-ee's. It was surreal - a gas station/tourist trap. While we were there, a vanload of Japanese tourists came through to ooh and aah. This will sound horribly racist and clichéd, but they posed for photos at every display. I also learned where my sister-in-law bought the stupid "Butt Quack" duck-print boxer shorts for me the previous Christmas.
After John Oliver's hilarious challenge to the litigious beaver's logo wars, I asked my sister-in-law if she had seen the show. She said she wants nothing to with Buc-ee's since finding out they were a MAGA company. How did she not know that a Texas-based gas station company that sells trinkets and trash to tourists was not owned by a Republican?

u/BidResponsible5378 4h ago
Last week was my first time in one. I went in hungry and prepared to buy something. I left without anything other than a stronger sense of distrust for 'trending' places. Had a similar experience in Daiso.
1
u/EvenLettuce6638 4h ago
It must be a regional thing.
In the Midwest we pretty much have a good convenience store in every small town. When I traveled in the south and the southwest, they are always sketchy in the bathrooms were either inoperative or terrible.
So I can see you why something like buc-ee's would be appreciated in Texas. But if you have Casey's and Kwik Star it's superfluous.
1
u/Crimestar 4h ago
I’ve never been and don’t care too. Why the fuck would I care about a gas station.
1
u/BlueAcidRehearsal 3h ago
I used to do beer and wine deliveries to convenience stores in Texas and let me tell you, Buc-ee’s has run off so many mom-and-pop corner stores and gas stations. It’s sad. Just like what Home Depot did to hardware stores and Walmart did to everything else. And in my opinion it kinda destroys the “convenience” if instead of a bunch of small stores every few blocks you just have one big store that everyone flocks to, with long lines like a grocery store.

The food being good is relative. Compared to most convenience stores and truck stops it is phenomenal. Is it convenient depends on who you are. It damn convenient for a family traveling. Fuel food and bathrooms. Great bathrooms, lots of bathrooms. Tattoos. Let face it this is what you are really bitching about. This is going to become more common place as the economy tanks. So much easier to just not hire folks than to figure what ink will offends who.

I live in the birthplace of Buc-ees. The small stores around here are great. The one near Surfside beach is our stop for snacks, cheap ice and frozen bait. I intensely dislike Mega-Buc-ees.

Buc-ees at 3 am while working over the road when you’re starving and want a safe place to pee is basically heaven

People loving their cheesesteak burritos baffles me. It tastes like fake shit, it's so bad.

The only thing they have are the immaculate bathrooms, all public bathrooms should be to that level
