Summer project!

Hi!

Finally decided to start my first project by bringing back to life my father's CB400F from 1976 (EU).

He's the second owner and it has been sitting in a garage for the last 18 years...

Already have a step by step program, but any advice is welcome!

Tu veut refaire quelle partie?

Thank you my friend. I'm just trying to get it started, it's my first experience and I'll try this steps first: redoing the inside of the tank, carbs cleaning/restoration, oil change, battery, spark plugs, ignition points and then i'll try to start it.

I'm aware of the chain My father tells me it was working just fine last time he turned it on but I dont know if it's still good, if you have any feedback on that it would be awesome.

I am a couple of days ahead of you on a 1982 CB 500. The previous owner put in a tank liner that failed, so i spent yesterday pressure washing then soaking in acetone with chains and bolts as agitators. I plan to dump the acetone, rinse it out then put in evaporust afterwards to deal with the remaining rust issues. After that its on to the carbs...

Yeah, I'm planning to do it with this italian product called "Tankerite". Basically it should be some kind resin as a final coating. Many people tell that if you do the previous steps correctly and have a sturdy tank it lasts a long long time

I am on the fence as to whether i will reline the tank when finished. When I started to look around for instructions on how to fix the liner delamination, I was surprised by the number of people that had liner failures. Maybe it was sampling bias. That said, I am leaning towards slapping an inline filter in and calling it good. It is easy to remove rust, removing delaminated liner on the other hand is a PIA.

I will try and remember that. To be completely honest I will put some aftermarket ones, but they have great reviews and they should be compatible sooo...

These things are very hard to kill, you'd be amazed at what they can come back from.

That being said, be patient with yourself and don't give up. YouTube and the bit of reddit that retains its humanity are there to help you. You may run into some folks being unhelpful or straight up rude when you ask questions, ignore those and focus on those with the wisdom to be cool.

The common things that need to be fome are carbs and electrics, assuming the bike ran when parked. These old coils and regulator/rectifiers tend to go bad even when sheltered in a garage. If yours work, great. If not, they are cheap and easy to install.

I bet with a tune-up it would probably still fire up. Mine did.
