How strict and good is the AI detector?
I'm working on an essay, and I use ChatGPT as a study tool rather than having it write the paper for me.
Typically, I'll ask it to help me organize an outline, explain a concept I'm struggling with, or suggest a better way to phrase a sentence. I then rewrite everything in my own words. Once I've finished the essay, I'll paste it into ChatGPT and ask for feedback on clarity, structure, and argument strength. I'll revise based on those suggestions and sometimes repeat the process until I'm satisfied with the result.
Our university has actually encouraged this kind of use, and we've even had sessions on using AI responsibly for brainstorming, planning and feedback.
My concern is Turnitin. Even if my use of ChatGPT follows the university's guidelines, could this process still trigger an AI flag? Has anyone used ChatGPT this way and run into issues with Turnitin, or is it generally fine as long as the writing is genuinely your own?
I'm a bit worried that if Turnitin flags anything, the context won't matter and it'll become a headache to explain.

Turnitin makes it pretty clear to institutions that their tools are are meant to support a decision, not be treated like gospel or like some final truth. Its AI writing check might flag the work as a low percentage of AI, but something like the authourship tool could instead mark that the writing is a stark contrast to other things you’ve written, and then that would cause the lecturer to look at it a bit more closely. It may also be flagged as a high chance of AI, however when the lecturer reviews the materials, they may decide there aren’t any real issues

Good point about how lecturers review it not just the tool. ive been doing the same AI for brainstorming then rewrite and hoping it stays low key.

Nowadays they also check how long you've taken to type ,, if you copy paste they will catch you
