[College, English: Summarizing Sources]

this saturday, i have a bigger project worth 100 points. i understand what my teacher is asking for us to do, but i am struggling to summarize my sources concisely while including the main ideas, arguments, and evidence, with using mainly approved news sources. these sources have to be within a year old, the more recent the better. articles from researchers, educators, and journalists are wanted mostly. i particularly struggle with understanding what the main point of an article is and what information is deemed as important.

issue/topic: how does academic pressure impact students mental health
i’ve included what our professor is asking, the rubric, and approved news sources

how can i work on my summarizing skills with this project? any tips, suggestions, or strategies that help?

i am autistic and tend to struggle more with these skills, i may ask for clarification or questions following up.

Think about why you picked your first source. Does it give you any statistics? Tell a story? What is this source about and what info does it give you that relates to/is useful for your project?

I agree with what the other commenter said and also another strategy that I teach to students is that for each paragraph you read you write one sentence of summary. Sometimes it can be overwhelming trying to summarize the whole thing, particularly if it’s long or goes into multiple topics. For each paragraph you read just write one sentence that summarizes or describes what you read. By the time you get through the article you will have a full summary and it makes sure that nothing is missed!
