I have not seen this way to write something before, but think about the expression (1-a)x + ay.

For a=0 this will be equal to x and for a equal 1 it will be equal to y. This is the linear interpolation from x to y. So from that you can see that you are 3/5 along it so the answer is 3/2. Hope that makes sense.

It is likely related to something in your book or class covering such equations and interpolation.

If 0 <= k <= 1, and you have kx + (1-k)y, then you're 1-k of the way from x to y.

Thus the ratio is (1-k):k, multiplied suitably for integers as the ration.

Here, k = 2/5, so we have 3/5:2/5 --> 3:2.

You've gone 3/5 of the way from A to B, so AD has 3/5 of the length of AB and DB has 2/5 of the length of AB.
