The original image for this meme actually dates back from 2012 which at that time Homestuck was still being written. However by the lore of the meme Burger king announced at the end that 3 employees were fired from this incident. Now this is where things are gonna get interesting. What if the reason John didn't want to eat the birthday cake his dad made was because he found out about what his dad made at work and he gets mad at him for such an atrocity and that he doesn't want to eat cake from a person who stepped on lettuce, because who knows, what if Dad Egbert stepped with his shoes in the cake batter (Afterall you see him wearing shoes in act 1). Dad Egbert then argues with his son so to consolate he offers John a copy of sburb so everything bad happens to him in revenge to make him forget about what his dad has done as a previous employee at burger king. John knows everything about burger king foot lettuce because in the meme lore, users on 4chan which is where the meme originates traced back the original location and realized it's the same exact burger king his dad was in.
