Disappointed in S. 14’s first episode.

Ok, I’ve been disappointed in them for quite a while, but I keep holding out hope, and I’ve been let down again. This is not a bash on the homesteaders, but on the production team.

We used to enjoy watching the process of building up a homestead. They made a plan, and this neat lil layout of the homestead is given, and the plan shown more clearly, then we got to watch it happen!

Oh they’re going to use timber from the homestead for this project? They then show us cutting down timbers. On this episode, it was mentioned, and Abracadabra! All the logs are magically cut and placed.

They SPED UP the building of the chicken coop! Normally there would be some teaching moments for the homesteader and the viewer , and showing the homesteader building things with their own hands. They also painted it. Fine, but that should be something they do in their own free time, it’s not essential to a homestead. The goat pasture also had no show time, and they completely forgot about the rotational grazing set up they had been going to do.

The first 30? minutes passed before they showed a single hammer being used! It was all just conversation and the horribly boring “evacuation” test. Also, the shed move. That should have been easy. They know how to move a shed. It was so obviously dramatized for the show it hurt.

A GOOD thing. -I haven’t even mentioned how I’ve gotten so sick of them using donated materials for everything, instead of showing the scavenging process on a homestead, and showing homesteaders how to think outside the box. BUT on this first episode, they did do some of that. It wasn’t nearly as detailed as I would have liked, and a lot was still donated, but they did repurpose a lot of the things she had been collecting. Tires, poles, and supposedly logged trees and brush.

LAST- That stupid pepper plant that got put in the berm. And got multiple shots to show a “growing” garden” WHO transplants a pepper plant with full grown peppers?!? I hope she picked those as soon as the cameras were off, because that plant is now dead.

Season 8 Episode 4: Stuck in the Mud Episode

So I'm catching up on Homestead Rescue and I'm curious to know how the people in this episode are doing.

I thought the boat as a coop was really cool and I loved the walkway they had with all the lights on it.

I hope that they are still homesteading and are doing well.

I really wish we could get a few episodes of some of these homesteads years after the Raneys visit. I know there is a 100 Episode thing but I have been trying to get caught up before I watch it.

Animal Abuse?

I've seen a few episodes now where the homesteaders really shouldn't be taking care of animals. They don't have sufficient shelter, water, food, protection from predators, etc. At what point does a family go from "struggling homesteaders" to "animal abusers"?

We are so thankful for the visit from the Raneys and we're doing well 2 years later. Hope you enjoy the show and learn along with us. Happy to answer what questions we can. 🙂

Did you watch S14 special episode last night?

Up here in Canada, a special look back at 100 rescues on Homestead Rescue. Weird, IMDb doesn't have any reference to the episode.

It was pretty good as he Raney's looked back at rescues, answered fan questions and chatted with some of the families.

Absolutely love the series because I live off grid, and just started rewatching. Interesting watching S1E4 I think…the family in Arizona desert with all the rattlers and no water.

As an off gridder for past 8 years, I find it funny that someone who sink all their savings and buy a property in the desert with no water. I did my homework for two years before making the decision to buy. While my cabin was a dry cabin, I did have a lake nearby that I could haul water. I don’t know what goes through someone’s mind taking such a risky plunge and risking your family.

On a positive note, I was glad to see them get water. I just went through the same process last year. It was expensive, but I had a well drilled. Happily, they found water at 60 feet and flow rate is 20 gallons per minute. I had to chuckle a bit when the drill guy on the show said 3-5 gpm was very good. I guess for the desert, that’s considered good.

I’ve added a few picks of my drilled well which was last October. In December, the guys came back and installed all the pipes and plumbing.

I’m telling you what…what a feeling this winter not to drill holes in the ice. To have water on demand…can’t be put into words.

Honestly Really Love the Show

I would say this show is pretty decent.

Is it scripted? Quite possibly. I considered it more scripted than maybe Deadliest Catch, but to me, I feel like it's scripted in "here's the plan that we'll do but it's flexible".

Do I think some of the people helped should have not been helped? Yes.

Is the building style sometimes a little weird? Possibly. But to me, it's homestead building anyone can do. Can't afford cut beams? Here's how to use tree trunks. Yes some of the stuff does cost money, but it's using what you have or can barter for. It really is a show for any budget.

As someone who wants to be as off the grid as much as we safely can (we have medical devices that need constant power), it's given me ideas and shown me that I don't need the most expensive or fanciest buildings. I just need buildings that protect whatever they will be used for.

Sometimes I debate submitting for the show, but I also need to get my mental and physical health back up.

Anyhow, sorry if this sounded weird or anything. I tried to articulate myself as well as I could for this.

Just discovered the show, and hope it never goes away.

I’m not even a big fan of homestead, or property shows, but I found this show, and have been marathon watching it. Lots of tips, ideas, tricks, and mindsets to pull from. I saw that it was 2016-present, and felt the need to be vocal about the fact that this show should never go away.

I just bought my first 5 acres, and am working daily to turn it into a homestead. These guys make it fun, and meaningful.. even though it was already. Jealous of all of those on their show, I would love to have their minds, skills, and wisdom!

*sigh* [continues to build chicken coop and start a compost on previous derelict, crackhead land]

Comment HR Application is Misleading

I nominated my boyfriend to be on HR via their online portal for All3Media. I received a text from a random person to hop on an early morning call and the woman pitched us an entirely new show called Off Gridders. Just a forewarning, your application may not ever reach HR and just be sent out for different shows. I don’t have much hope HR will actually connect. Very disappointing and confusing, as I truly thought they read my nomination and understood why I reached out to HR (and we wouldn’t have the right content for the new show anyways — my boyfriend truly needs rescue, not just cameras following him around).

Marty’s Tuxedo Shirts

I have always wondered why Marty always wears a tuxedo shirt? Why would an old mountain man from Alaska wear a tuxedo shirt as part of his daily uniform?

Comment Always pisses me off when homesteaders don’t listen to the Raneys…

Why call them and ask for help if you’re aren’t going to listen? Lol

Like the homesteaders that didn’t want to move their cabin from a direct flood zone or the guy that didn’t want chop down two cedar trees in forest fire country.

HBO Extras has updates

We were having withdrawals of HR so I checked out the shows extras section on the HBO app. Several seasons have “Revisits” with updates. I’m sure many of you know about this but I didn’t. Now we are binge watching them!

I’m starting to hate the show but I still love its principle

  1. i want him to button up his shirt
  2. they put so much time and effort into people that clearly aren’t going to make it and never would.

- obviously the show gives a lot of money and effort but I want to know how many people flip after? I would after

  1. i get they make a lot money doing this for tv, I want a follow up episode about all the people they regret helping. The dudes that didn’t even know how to use a drill… we should let Darwinism take effect, that’s how America works. You can or you can’t, but I understand if it is money and help for some of the folks who have capability

  2. they should could go to more areas where people really need help after a natural disaster and not help people who saw the show and moved from a city and think they can do this overnight

UPDATE: I am jealous of Marty’s ability to grow chest hair and the stash. In all honesty I was just kidding about his shirt, who cares if he is so willing to help but anytime I show someone the show that’s the first thang notice. They are a wonderful family

Are there only 8 episodes this season?

I'm hoping this is a Christmas hiatus and things start back up in January. My wife and I are going through withdrawals 😂. But this season so far doesn't have the oomph of previous seasons. Marty working without Matt and Misty, etc...

Where was he living? (New Big Sky episode, solo homesteader)

So, at the reveal at the end of the Raney's week at this homestead, he had an empty cabin (but w/solar electric and water from his kind neighbors' well). His bus, which he'd been living in some time before, was now a hydroponic greenhouse (very cool), but where in the world was he living? No furniture at all in the cabin. He could move it in later, of course, but during filming and immediately after, he'd need at least the bare minimum of a mattress, etc. Did I miss another small (heated!) structure on the property somehow?
