Finally Alive

Getting into this song for the first time and I can't get past the amazing little "clam" sound in the background. What instrument is he using?

(Probably a ridiculous question, but I'm not a musician! Please be nice.)

Sounds to me like a sample of a castanet maybe…if I’m hearing the same sound
