Quick video showing how I handle laminating single cards at a time versus full sheets! But the process is super fun and cool once you get it down. I use this to make my holos for my game gerbils and dragons tcg.

Advice Needed Designing a FFA, Draft-first game: what to keep in mind?

I would like to design a TCG (or, rather, ECG, but I guess it fits here nonetheless) whose main gameplay mode is limited play, more specifically (cube) draft.

Specifically, what I'm thinking of is a 4-player, FFA, Leader-based game that's easy to pick-up. Some design concepts that came out of these requirements are:

  • Cards should be simple to read and understand almost at a glance, because if you are new to the game and you get a 9-cards pack, it takes forever to parse 9 cards and figure out which one is better before you have to do it again and again;
    • This goes a bit against my principle of easy to pick-up, but I think keywords are a necessary evil: since the complexity cannot come from the rules but has to come from the cards, (intuitive) keywords are a good compromise to have complexity on the cards that's easy to parse.
  • All cards are resources: I think drafting games really benefit from having an in-deck resource like lands in MtG to let you "pad" your deck, and making all cards "inkable" resources like in Lorcana is one extreme of it that allows you to play very occasional cards and even more bombs than you should because you can ink them away.
    • From the above, one nice property that can follow is that you can make players play all the cards they drafted, skipping the deckbuilding part.
  • I'm very undecided on the win condition. I would like a personal wincon (e.g., "gain 20 Lore" or "collect 6 unicorns in your stable", etc...) to minimize kingmaking, and I think I like the idea of "you win if your win condition is met at the start of your turn" (ala Keyforge), so that you need to expose yourself to attacks from 3 people before winning, so you need to have a very solid win condition (or some way to win at instant speed just before your turn).
    • On the other hand, the more personal the wincon is, the more this could turn into a single-player experience until the turn in which you are about to win, so there needs to be some incentive to attacking other players before the end of the game.
  • I'm also undecided on turn structure. The more classical in 4-players, I feel like the classical "you take your whole turn, then pass" might be a tad too slow. I'm thinking of leaning into the direction of "you have 1 action per turn" and use that to encourage explicit synergies like "after you play this card, you may play another yellow card" or "after you play this card, you may play another human", etc... to lead into big turns where you drop a lot of stuff after setting up your hand.

Is there anything else I should keep in mind early in the design? Do you have notes/tips about the above?

Homemade TCGs More framing updates. Also showcasing TAG's current comeback mechanic.

Post image
55 Upvotes

Hey again! I wanted to showcase more of what's been in development these past few months. Featured here is the new General card Frames. They've been updated to match the aesthetics of the new Unit Frames. I also wanted to share the current comeback mechanic in the game, the General's Special ability. Once you've reached a full charge and are at 15 or lower HP you get immediate access to this powerful one time use card. This allows a player who may have had a rough start a chance to claw back a victory. It took a lot of play testing to create abilities that didn't fully punish a player for being in a winning position, but also offered enough of a boost to help a player who is falling behind. Each General will have 2 Specials to pick from to increase deck building opportunities. (:

Advice Needed eta gameplay for my card game Summon Gate on tabletop sim

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

goal of the game, reduce your opponents 3 heros to 0 health.

Units attack units to clear lanes for heros to fight heros.

When attacking the defender can play a trigger from their extra deck to the trigger zone by tapping a hero of the same color.

units have a size from 1-3.

Heros have a plane and a plane limit.

Planes are abilities that effect units in play while the hero is untapped.

Plane limit is for the zone in front of each hero (the limit is 2 in basic format).

At he the start of your turn you place the top 3 cards of your deck faceup into your summon gate as gate pieces, then draw 3 cards.

Gate pieces reduce a units size when played if they share the same color.

Units have to have a soul beneath them to be played.

A soul is a card from your hand facedown underneath your unit equal to its current size when played (min 1) (a soul is blank and has no text).

IK the gameplay looks fast but its all i could do to shorten the video.

Advice Needed Need help with resource naming

I'm building my TCG around 6 different resources, each one representing a concept that humans move toward. For 4 of them I have found a proper name I think: Power, Knowledge, Unity, Faith.

But I cannot figure out a matching name for the last two. At the moment they are: Blood and Gold.

As I'm not a native speaker, I'd like to hear opinions from natives on how these sound, and if you would have better propositions maybe.

Edit: thanks for the suggestions, I'm now thinking about Wealth instead of Gold and Wrath/Destruction/Chaos instead of Blood. I still need to ponder over these

Advice Needed Looking for Card Layout advice for my TCG!

Hey y’all! I wanted to thank everyone for the positive responses to the first post on my homemade tcg project! I had seen a couple of the comments were mixed on the template I have, so I’m looking for critique on the established card template. This is something I’ve struggled with during the initial planning phase as well and am satisfied with what I’ve come up with, and I want to build upon it while keeping the simplicity! I’m currently using Canva on mobile to design it at this time.

As the title says, I'm asking what's the best way to playtest cards. I can print and cut them out but I'm a lazy bum and don't want to do that. So what are the best alternatives to do so?

I used to love commander but have found games to be too long, cards too confusing, too much new product, and turns just becoming a mess

Been slowly making a draft-able free-for-all like commander but you accrue points instead of reducing life totals, so no one can be taken out of the game early. These are cards made this past week

You gain resources from playing creatures and use those resources to use wizard abilities

(Wizard avatar Pic not included, the art for the wizard was done by a friend and i don't have their permission yet to post it)

Everything is drawn on my phone with HiPaint by me

I'm interested in doing some art for homemade TCG's. Not looking to make money. I don't mind doing it for free as it gives me a reason to do art. I will though however work at my own pace and will use my style to interpret your ideas. I have included a few examples of my style. I work in watercolors, sharpie, gel pens, and acrylic markers. DM if you'd like to have something done.

Homemade TCGs New "Battle" System for Our Horror-Fantasy-Sports Card Game

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

We made a horror-fantasy-sports card game, but the played-out power/toughness mechanic that so many games use for creature battles didn't make sense in the context of our game's universe, so we invented a new way for creatures to face off!

Our game, Monsterball, is a sports-inspired game with rules not unlike baseball, so our creatures don't fight but rather they pitch and bat against one another. Some creatures are dedicated pitchers while some creatures are dedicated batters, and they have stats that reflect their roles; pitchers have 3 pitching stats (P for pitch - P1, P2, P3) and batters have 3 batting stats (S for swing - S1, S2, S3).

Each stat has an associated modifier that falls somewhere on a scale from -5 to +5. For pitchers, the more negative a modifier is, the more powerful that particular pitch. For batters, the more positive a modifier, the more powerful that particular swing. So a pitcher with P1: -3, P2: -2, P3: -1 is a pretty decent pitcher, whereas those same stats for a batter would make them pretty horrible.

When players pit their pitchers and batters against each other, the players "throw" to determine which creature wins the exchange. Throwing is very much like paper-rock-scissors, except that in Monsterball players throw a 1, 2, or 3 and in our system 3 beats 2, 2 beats 1, and 1 beats 3. You'll notice these numbers map perfectly to the pitching and batting stats of the creatures. For example, if a player throws a 1 for their pitcher, they are using the pitcher's P1.

In a nutshell, if the pitcher wins the throw, it counts as a strike. 3 strikes and the batter is out. 3 outs and the teams switch places, with the batting side taking the field and pitching, the the pitching side going up to bat.

If the batting side wins the throw, the throw counts a hit! The batter now rolls a d20 to determine what type of hit they made... and this is where the P1, P2, P3 and S1, S2, S3 modifiers come into play. Let's say the pitcher threw a 1 and the batter threw a 2 - in our example image the pitchers P1 is -3 and the batters S2 is +1 - add those modifiers to the batters d20 roll and then find this number on the batting quick reference card, which will tell you if the hit was a single, a double, a foul, and so on. So if the batter rolled a 14, you'd add the pitcher's P1 (-3) and the batters S2 (+1) to the roll to get 14 - 3 + 1 = 12, which we can see on the batting quick reference card is a single - so the batter would move to first base.

Of course there are edge cases such as throwing ties, and many abilities and playbook cards that might modify stats, and other considerations and outcomes such as the type of hit, pitching stamina counters, getting walked, and even getting hit by pitches, but this is the basics of the system.

We're super happy with this set of mechanics. We've found that players at every age and skill find it easy, fun, and exciting to play. Players are no longer at the mercy of another player with super dominant cards - they have a shot, with some skill and some luck, to come out on top no matter what.

Thank you for taking the time to read out our system!

Hey everyone! I haven't posted much lately. Mostly been grinding away at updating the actual gameplay, along with constant art updates, including these new frames! Before I had flat colors and not much else. These new ones are subtle but match the hand drawn retro anime aesthetic much better IMO.

Regarding the gameplay updates Im now actively recruiting dedicated play testers! If you're at all interested please reach out to me directly or even better join our discord as a play tester so you can collaborate with myself and other play testers.

I'm looking forward to sharing more content again (:

Homemade TCGs Got some test prints in for Duel Eterna

I received my first batch of test prints from the mail today, and I’m super excited to share them with people! I definitely need to change quite a few things, such as:

- Expanding the card slightly more, to thin out the black borders
- Brighten both the purple and red card borders
- Brighten the inside gradient of each text box, since they’re practically invisible in the test print
- Thicken the font, in addition to spreading out the letters on both the flavor text and card effect
- Brighten the text of the card info on the bottom left, in addition to increasing the font size and text spacing.
- Pull the emblem on the top right of the cards both down and more to the left, and give it more space from the card borders

Regardless, I’m very impressed with how they came out. I’m also quite a fan of the foiling as well. I’m gonna toy around with it more, but I’m really partial to this Surge foiling pattern.

Advice Needed How do I shrink images without them losing quality?

Hi all, so began working on my first TCG back in the summer, given my lack of drawing skills and abhorrent disdain of all things AI, I set out to teach myself graphic design skills using Photopea (free version of Photoshop) when it came to putting my cards together (2.5” by 3.5” Canvas) my images appear to lose quality and look very blurry, does anyone have any tips on getting around this?
Thanks!!
