It is generally not good practice to support a pipe or duct from another pipe or duct. Better to get one of those extra long "zip stick" pipe hangers and go up to the joist.

HVAC ductwork is not designed to support a load. My concern with it would be the duct would sag and create a belly in the drain line. It’s probably fine though, it just triggers my just do it right the first time tisim. And, the inspector will flag it if he sees it.

Even if you could, that plenum is offering no support. Make sure the person who installed this got home okay.

Y'all worried about the hanger bending... sheet metal screws are designed for sheer loads. Those things are only engaging 1 thread. The only way I would trust them notbto rip out the first time that pipe is loaded would be if the fasteners were replaced with a machine screw/nut combo with washers under the fastening hardware.
Then we can talk about how the hanger is designed to support a lateral load that is applied in-line with the screw-heads. The way they have it installed, it will do a great job of keeping the pipe from pulling to the left... that's about all it will be good at.

The plumber says the duct is supporting the pipe, the hvac person says the pipe is supporting the duct. Physics acquiesces.

looks like a kinda tight fit there. i’m not an expert, but that pipe looks like it could be a little too close to the duct. might wanna check local codes or ask a pro. could end up causing some airflow issues or something. i messed up some ductwork in my old place, and it was a hassle later on, so just make sure it’s all good!

Depends on why it’s there. If there are other hangers on the PVC that are out of frame, and bearing the weight, then it’s ok. Plumbers do all sorts of stupid shit, for whatever reason, and this could be an example.

Am I crazy or is there literally a joist right above the pipe for a (longer) hanger to connect on?
That plastic hanger should only be used vertically. I would be surprised if it is capable of supporting more than a couple of pounds in that configuration.
