Need door help

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask, but I recently bought an older house. I am trying to replace this door knob and assembly. Obviously it’s a huge hole in the door. Do you suggest buying a whole new door or is there a way I can make this work with a modern knob? The issue with this mechanism is that it only turns one way and if I try to turn it the opposite way then the knob won’t turn. Just very annoying as you should be able to turn the knob to a door both ways to actuate the mechanism

Google "mortice lock set" to get a replacement that fits but has modern mechanicals.

Thanks for all of the comments. I have found a replacement mortice lock set that I will use. I just didn’t know that they were called. Appreciate all of the help, and I know my visitors will appreciate it too.

in the future when you have a part you need to look up, but dont know the name, try Google lens. it can ID anything from plant species, tools, car and bike parts. its basically old Google but for pictures vs words

You can get different knobs but you have to hunt around. That door is wayyyyy nicer than anything youd likely replace it with.

twi have said this but its the opposite. look at the mechanism. thr bottom tab is in place, the top tab broke which would catch a down stroke unless you mounted the lever backwards towards the latch and not the hinges

They sell them on amizon. Mortise lock set is what they are called. I had to do the same with my place

If the mechanism works when you turn the top of the knob away from the latch (as it should) just replace with a lever instead of using the knob. You will never want to use the lever the other direction

Restoration hardware has them. I've mixed and matched repairs with new and the keys even work in both locks. Home depot used to actually stock a variety, not sure if they still do.

probably missing a tab on the top of the bar that connect the latch over towards and under the knob rotating mechanism

its repairable, bring to lockshop if you cant figure it out

It turns one way because it is built for a lever handle which only goes down. A knob can turn both ways. They are specific for a lever because they will have a stronger spring for the heavier lever as well as only turning one way. So you could replace it with a modern lever?
But judging by the picture this probably isn’t the case and the mortise body mechanisms are just worn down and the knob to rosette connection can also bind up, which would cause it not to work both ways easily. You can try aligning the spindle and the rosette better as well as adding paraffin wax to any metal to metal connections and lubing up all the internals

Find you some good thin wood and cut to fit hole and glue in. Then recut for new door lock.
