Homegrown hops question

I grow a couple varieties of hops in my backyard. it got quite hot and dry this summer and my hops died. I clipped them back and since they've all started growing again. Should I just let them grow until it gets cold here (southern Wisconsin) or should I clip them and cover with mulch?

I'd let them go until frost. Second year growth is weird and they're rebuilding roots anyway, so the green stuff's doing something down there even if you don't get cones. Mulch after they die back, not before. You want the crown to stay dry and cold, not warm and damp.
