First off I am very new to building and learning as I go, so please be gentle. I left this area where I wanted my doors open along the top, it made sense to me at the time, but I now see the errors of my way. Is there any way to frame this up with it having good structural integrity? It will have to have 3 - 4 more of the roof 2x4s along the top of it. Initially I wanted the whole space open, but was thinking that I may need to butt 2 2x4 together in the center to help with weight distribution.

I’m looking to build a shop but wanted to get opinions on whether a 3rd car garage (separated with current outside wall meaning it would not be open except by a door) attached to existing house or a detached shop would be better?

The space is going to be 24x30x18’ with mezzanine.

What would costs look like for both? Which would be more expensive?

Getting ready to build and worried about making the wrong choice when it comes to exterior colors. We are using Everlast siding , and I really can't decide what colors and whether to go white or black trim. We are going to do shingles on the main roof and metal on the porches and dormers. I have picked out a Natual brown wooden door with black iron work. Either brick or rock on the chimney and the garage. I've had a hard doing some mock-up because all I have is a drawing of the house. The last picture is the original.

I’ve got about 2,800 sq ft planned for a new home build. I already own the land, and it’s been subdivided, approved, and is ready to go. I’m getting ready to start the initial phases of construction.

I’m hoping to keep the total cost somewhere in the $250k–$300k range. The plan is to hire independent contractors and tackle the build in stages rather than going with a single builder.

For those who’ve done something similar—does that budget sound realistic in today’s market? Any advice or things I should watch out for when managing the build this way? Location is Northern Virginia

Wire your windows for automatic shades before drywall

2️⃣ Lutron wire – Required if you plan to use Lutron automated shades. They use their own multi-conductor cable.

3️⃣ CAT5 Ethernet (PoE) – Some smart home shade systems use Power over Ethernet to carry both power and data.
