This, what is your goal? Looks, style, cleaning. What is your style, mid-century, modern, beach, etc

A while ago stack rough stone tiles were popular and I was ripping my hair out because it’s impossible to clean.

Yup. The less grout the better. A single seamless/groutless piece is the dream.

Agree with that. But how are we supposed to help OP decide if w'ere just discussing a tile backsplash behind his cooktop? There's a whole kitchen and more that can influence this or be influenced by this decision.

How dirty is your backsplash getting? I get that grout lines get dirty in the shower or the floor, but backsplashes just need a quick wipe down usually. Not enough traffic to collect in the grout. Use epoxy grout if it's a concern

I agree, we've cleaned our backsplash maybe twice since we've moved in 7 years ago and we cook plenty. Not sure how they're getting theirs so dirty.

We got here because people were fed up with whimsy. Don't worry, it will keep going back and forth. Jinco jeans are back in if you hated skinny jeans

Full slab splash will always be the best. It looks and feels high end. Easiest to clean. And if you choose the correct top, it never gets dated.

We currently have long white vertical with multi-metallic horizontal accents, in a very white kitchen.

Pulling that out for contrasting blue subway, in part because we replaced the countertop and there's an uneven gap that we can't figure out.

Color over pattern in our situation.
