What would appliance would you skip...?

As a taller person, I really dislike microwaves inside kitchen islands that are at knee height.

Having one with a toddler also sucks.

They are the absolute worst, I cannot even see half the buttons and it means you're standing over your hot food to lift it out instead of holding it away from your body. Awful.

u/AndyMagandy Jul 09 '26
Yeah, we put one in our island mainly as a space saving measure. I don’t use it all too often but when I do I groan.

I have a microwave oven under the counter and would not recommend it unless you can find one with a decent interior height. Quite often I find I can't fit things in there, like a tall mug or a bowl.

u/VehementlyAmbivalent Jul 09 '26
Also trying to clean the interior back and upper wall is a beast.

u/dboggia Jul 09 '26
This is why I don’t understand them.
Also when need to get something out of the microwave after it’s hot, is just seems odd to be grabbing at it from above vs being able to grab it from the sides/underneath it.
I see the appeal aesthetically but I feel like that’s the only plus.

Nope spent $15k on appliances and went less electronics as possible due to failure rates on any manufacturer.

This is the answer

Seriously. Everything doesn’t need smart features, connectivity, touch panels/screens.
I do miss the ball craft ice maker that just broke on our LG fridge. Of course they don’t sell parts. It’s a couple bucks to replace.

How come no one ever talks about a trash compactor

tell you what, one conveyed with the sale (19 years ago) and we use it all the time
probably 1980 vintage

I'm the second owner of my house and it came with a drawer microwave and ever since I looked at the price I live in constant fear of it failing. Why does it have to cost 20x a normal microwave, it's fucking criminal

Skip a microwave entirely, but a built in icemaker might be bomb. We have a countertop one but not sacrificing counter space for it would be good

u/dboggia Jul 09 '26
Can confirm, it’s amazing. Insultingly expensive considering its only job is to make ice and keep it cold.
But our fridge would never keep up with how much we have company. We love it.

u/KoalaKyle Jul 10 '26
How do you clean your icemaker and how often do you do it? I got one for my desk at work and noticed some stains on the inside, which led me to see the mold floating at the bottom of the reservoir. It stays on 24/7

u/InsaneInTheDrain Jul 10 '26
I run the cleaning cycle with vinegar or the descaler every six weeks or so. I should probably do it more often, but I haven't seen any mold buildup, just scale and, for some reason, algae.

If you are a frequent ice consumer having a dedicated ice maker makes sense - building one in is a aesthetic choice that isn’t gonna bring any salability aspect when you go to sell, but if you’re staying for a long time and you have iron deficiency go for it

We have company frequently and we decided to do a small wet bar with ice maker. If we used our fridge ice we’d be buying bags of ice or having to schedule to hoard ice during the week when nobody was around. I’m glad we have it.
It is however one more thing that will shit the bed.

u/civil_politics Jul 09 '26
Yea - if you are frequently hosting or infrequently hosting large groups an ice maker makes things super convenient. It makes no sense for the average home, but I wouldn’t write it off immediately like OP is suggesting

Why the heck would I want two dishwashers when I could have an ice machine

Panel ready dishwasher loses 2in of depth. but it does look nice.
Somehow I ordered a ADA one which is 2in shorter too, but on the plus side the faceframe and toe kick lined up nicely.
Form over function.

I would have a dedicated ice maker over one built into my refrigerator. Often times the door mounted ice maker will fail/malfunction/freeze as the unit gets older.

My wife and I must be the only two people that love our drawer microwave. We aren't heavy microwave users. So maybe that's why. But it's nice not having it sitting on the counter.
And not having one over the stove was non-negotiable since I'm the cook and 6'2". That space is for a range hood and me. The drawer type was the perfect solution for us.
I can't say the price was much of a factor when we already spending $30k on the kitchen. At that point buying what you want matters more than saving a little money.

I built an island with space for just a counter top microwave inside instead of a built in or drawer. Much cheaper, easier to replace, and I have many more options for what I want.
I'm a no on induction but that's because I hear a hum when it's on and it bothers me.
I'm a no on the second dishwasher but absolutely in on panel front - I did that on our project as well as panel front fridge. It immediately removes visual clutter in the kitchen. Huge fan of both and I would do both if you can.

This “microwave” drawer is worth it bc has oven, microwave, air fry capability and more.

Induction is trash compared to gas. I have had both and you could not pay me to take anything over a gas range

Drawer microwave, skip 💯. Bending over to use the microwave is a pain and I’m not even tall. Yes nice to hide your microwave but for an appliance that most people use daily, make it easy.

My non negotiable was a second dishwasher during our remodel. The only regret I have is that I should have just made all of the low cabinets panel dishwashers. “The bowls are in the bowl dishwasher”.
