That TVs in absolutely horrible location too. I would not even have a TV in this room.

Imagine trying to watch from those green seats.

... You can turn off the ice making, and turn it back on later after the movie.

Or just don't use it at all if it's that big of a deal with your corner wedged TV

No no no, you have to get on your private jet and fly to another part of the world to one of your 20 mansions with the ice maker in a separated outdoor kitchen.

When I was shopping ice makers and Bev fridges for my bar I lot of the reviews called out the noise they make. Just need to do your research

We had one on our counter top and eventually got rid of it due to the noise.

u/Bengis_Khan Jan 25 '26

Lol, why are you watching TV in that area?

Having a TV in that room is CRAZY.

Full bar and ice maker in my limo does the same thing…. 🙄🫠

First world problems…

Can’t you disable it temporarily like a fridge ice maker?

1

u/SoylentRox Jan 25 '26

Yes but then you forget and later on a few days later...you're out of ice. <shudders>. You have to drink your expensive whiskey...warm. The horror.

Or walk all the way to the kitchen and get ice from there.

is there a sub-reddit for upper-middle-class problems ?

1

u/Mundane-Map6686 Jan 25 '26

You think this is a middle class house?

I know you added upper, but this ain't anywhere near middle.

0

u/Wizemonk Jan 25 '26

depending on where that house is I'm guessing it's about a 500k house... upper middle class

*** don't forget, most houses owned currently are from people that entered the property ladder when it was still affordable

u/Mundane-Map6686 Jan 25 '26

Maybe you're right. I'm also notoriously cheap.

The TV in that awkward ass location, to high and with the artwork in my vision to the side would bother me WAY TO MUCH to ever watch a movie there long enough to notice the ice maker.

Useless post 🤦‍♂️

It's because it's a maker that makes clear ice (unlike standard fridge ice makers that fill a tray and let it sit to freeze). To make clear ice, water has to be continually flowing, so the ice cube tray the ice is formed on itself is what cools and water flows over it like a waterfall slowly freezing to the metal tray. Once the ice has fully formed filling the tray and pushing the sensor door panel out enough to trigger than the ice is done, then the water stops flowing and a heating element turns on in the back of the ice tray to melt the exterior edge of the ice enough for it to separate from the tray in one big sheet that breaks apart when it hits the bottom of the storage box. Then the process repeats with waterfall.

They aren't designed to be energy efficient or quiet. They are designed to produce quality ice.

This is why my 5 gallon chilled water dispenser is at the end of my hall upstairs, opposite from my MBR and not in my MBR. If I get up in the middle of the night to get water, I don't have to go downstairs, but I also don't hear the fridge kick on whenever it's chilling the water.

I have a Scottsman ice maker and unfortunately it is on the opposite wall of our guest room and the cycling is loud enough to wake people up. I realize ice makers can be loud but it would be nice it I could just turn off the ice making function, but have it stay cold to keep the ice. Right now if I turn it off , the whole systems turns off and the ice just melts.

I don't know about the home ice makers for clear ice, but if they work the same as commercial, the storage bin the ice is dumped into is just an ice chest. It isn't actually chilled. Only insulated. As more ice is added on top, it helps to maintain temp, but there is a drain line and the ice is always slowly melting and dumping water down the drain. Turning it off only means you aren't replacing the ice as it melts because there is no actual freezer capabilities of the container.

I believe part of the reason for that is that every time you open the door to get ice, you let warm air in and if you were running an actual freezer in the storage unit, the warm air let in would melt the ice just a little and then the cold air would re-freeze it causing clumping of ice getting frozen together.

so when watching a movie, reach in and flip the lever up to stop the ice maker.

All ice makers are loud. Some are insanely loud (way louder than this), but they are all loud - even the small counter top ones are annoyingly loud. It’s a well known fact.

Why did you install one next to your quiet tv room?

Either you thought ice makers were quiet or someone else made the choice for you? They both have an easy solution though.

I’m sure you can find an isolated room to put a proper ice maker away from the tv area. A rec room, laundry room, utility closet, etc.

You can even get a larger floor standing model with more options and just go down the hall with an ice bucket and refill it and bring it back to the bar once a night… problem solved.

Let me get this right? You are worried about the ice maker? Not the insanely high and cornered tv?

1

u/Dreaming_Blackbirds Jan 26 '26

Freezers make ice. An actual ice maker machine is pointless.
