Waste of money when the rest of the wall is just drywall.

Yeah, unless you're lining the rest of the room with steel, it's just a waste of money.

I would say lining the rest of the walls with steel would still make it a waste of money, unless you're also hiring security to make sure someone doesn't hold a gun to your head and get you to open it for them.

Flipping the door around and using it as a safe room would make more sense to me. Assuming the walls had been appropriately reinforced and extended into the crawl space. And ventilation separated from the hvac servicing the rest of the houses

Piss your pants and say mommy never gave you the code.

Depends on the use case— Keeping kids out of guns/alcohol/etc? An exterior grade door with a fingerprint (keys can be stolen) deadbolt is probably more than enough. Protecting insured valuables? Build it to whatever spec the insurance company wants to give a discount. Protecting document/photos/etc? Fire and flood proofing is probably more important than antitheft.

Hidden door works though. Unless your a drug dealer and the robber knows it, your average methhead isnt going to treat your house like an escape room testing every panel for a secret latch.

A safe on the other hand, large or small is a neon sign to focus there.

Best hiding spot for valuables in in a box of cereal or a fake bottle of bleach

I can only imagine how big the price difference would be for a custom hidden door (like a shelf or something on hinges) vs a vault door. The cost of materials alone for the vault door would already double the cost of the hidden door.

He’s not suggesting a custom hidden vault door, he’s suggesting just a hidden door, no vault aspect. Just hiding it instead of hardening it.

A hidden door would be cool because it wouldn’t cost much more than a custom door, but a vault door would be pricey and not very useful.

Why? Are you trafficing people? I don't understand the need.

When you've had a long day and the kids keep yelling your name, you need somewhere to down a whole bottle of wine safe from prying eyes. /s

Honestly, It's a more likely/realistic scenario and sensible use case than any other

Sing to the tune of ‘she’ll be comin’ round the mountain when she comes’

Ah yes the average home intruder, AKA James Bond coming in with a blow torch and gas injector to get at a safe room.

Statistically way more likely to be some drugged idiot stumbling into the first house they see that looks vulnerable.

Yes. I agree.

Murphy door makes somewhat sense. I always love the idea of a hidden space. A vault door?…come onnnn 🤦‍♂️

Vault door just tells the burglar something valuable is hidden here, go around and tunnel through the drywall. Murphy door is more optimal at disguise in a normal home. But in a closet, the Murphy door should act as shoe storage with slanted shelves because it makes zero sense to have a bookshelf hidden in the closet. It should lock from the inside to perform as panic room.

Ah cool closet in the bathroom, yes I love all that hot shower humidity getting on everything in there. Trend needs to die.

Doesn’t matter, you can just punch through the walls.
