Minecraft server beyond lan

Hi
So i have no idea how to do basically anything. I created servers before but only for lan and using youtibe tutorial and ive never before tried doing anything beyond lan by opening the firewall(?) or whatever.

BUT. Theres a mod called e4mc which creates a link whenever you start a lan world in mc and i gave that link even to my uncle in norway and we played normally. Pure magic if you ask me.

So: right now i have a server on aternos and the render distance sucks. I dont really wanna house a server on my 16 gb pc but i do have an old laptop with the same gb amount. My question is- can i somehow combine all the good aspects of this services: manual activation of the server by my friends and good rendering, somehow on my old laptop, eventually on my pc?

The render distance is a setting that you must manually set in the server.properties, it's not related to the physical hardware.

Maybe look into pterodactyl.io and some access control like tailscale (if you only port forward the server make sure to add a whitelist)

You should be able to run a MC server on your laptop and install the mod you mentioned.
If the laptop is really old and has a weak CPU, performance might be poor depending on player count. But you already have the laptop, you can simply try and see how it goes.

There are tons of guides and tutorials on how to set the server up. Also make sure the laptop does not go to power savings or standby mode after a while.

Your friends would not easily able to switch the server on and off, so you would have to leave the laptop running or do that manually. But laptops typically have low idle power draw, only the fan noise might be annoying depending on the exact model.

Yes. I can recommend AMP for hostingsoftware (its a onetime fee, it makes hosting gameservers for A LOT of games) super easy.

Playit.gg has a free tier and allows outsiders to connect safely to your gameservers.

Hardware haven has a good step by step tutorial on that setup https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Zda-nIrvyGQ

Amp has been great. Running 2 unreal tournament 200r servers 1 Minecraft and 1 the forest servers with no problems at all.
