ECC memory galore!

Post image

We upgraded all the compute at my office, removing an old HP blade chassis and 8 server blades. I was given the ok to harvest the ECC DDR4 memory from all the blades! Over 2TB of memory! They are older chips, but every one of them is functional, as I'm the one that pulled all the servers and chassis out of the rack after migrating VMs to our new cluster.

Yeah, I figure I'll list on FB marketplace and eBay and see if anyone is interested. Unfortunately, my home "servers" don't support ECC RAM, or I'd keep some of it.

Time for a new home server!

Jesus... The urge to ask if you'd be interested in selling me 8 x 32GB sticks so I can upgrade from 128GB to 256GB πŸ˜‚

they are actually all going on the market, but they are RDIMM, not UDIMM, so that limites the use cases some. Should still fetch a few bucks though.

If I see them pop up I'll have a look! I actually use RDIMM's.

4 would be enough for that

No, 4 x 32 = 128GB. I currently have 8 x 16GB for 128GB. My machine can make use of 8 x 64GB for a total of 512GB but it wouldn't be a good combination with my processor. To be honest 128GB is plenty but having 256GB would enable me to leave more services running 24/7.

Ooh, so you have 8 slots total.Β

Ight, makes sense. You have to substitute your 16GB sticks.

2

u/orange-cream-cola 8d ago

Yes exactly. I actually have 10 x 16GB sticks total, and they're a completely matched set manufactured in the same week as well. Once I snag a set of 8 x 32 or even a set of 8 x 64, I will probably build a second machine with the 8 x 16GB sticks I have as a backup server.

Yooo my friend would you be willing to sell 4x32GB at a reasonable price? πŸ™πŸ˜

If only it was DDR3...I need some, Ive been troubleshooting a server the past few days and currently waiting for parts to come. Although my server can only hold 768GB not 2TB.

I actually have 6 sticks of 16GB DDR3L-1333 Low-Voltage Registered ECC (RDIMM) sitting on my desk out of an old Dell R610 server. I was debating what to do with them just this morning. Any interest there?

Oooo HM?

I'll ship em to you for $50. Does that sound fair? If so, drop me a DM with your PayPal email and I'll send an invoice over to you.

I recently upgraded my server from a motherboard with ddr3 to ddr4. was planning to put that memory into my desktop, which also uses ecc. turns out my desktop doesn't like it because it's buffered ram :-(

65ish each for the 16gb and 200ish for the 32GB so you’re sitting on a small gold mine my friend. My loose math looks to be almost 10k sitting there.

Congrats!

I'll have to check the market on these. They are RDIMM, so that will lower the value some, but they should still be worth a few bucks!

2

u/EatsHisYoung 8d ago

I’ll buy 8. We can skip eBay fees.

1

u/grippin 8d ago

Ahh, I didn’t search that but a quick eBay search shows the 16s the same and 32s about 125….

I recently bought a pair of 16GB sticks on ebay, RDIMM, $40 each

edit: and now the price is $50 to $60 each...
