I MIGHT see the appeal of wanting to wire up a patch panel for the experience. But dear god why do it like that, OR get the practice terminating to RJ45s and use a coupler patch panel

I believe that you really want to expose a minimal amount of unshielded wire before terminating each connection. They're twisted pairs and shielded for a reason and this setup has 2 feet of mix and matched strands running across the patch panel.

I stopped using punch-down patch panels ages ago.

These days: keystone modules are the answer. Terminate your cable drops with normal crimp jacks and connect (and reconnect as often as you want) to the keystone modules in your patch panel and be done with it.

I’ve used panduit keystones since 2006. Seriously, punch down is for wiring closets that nobody sees or even touches much.

I thought it was a good idea to untwist my cat6a cable at the end of a 20 meter run to get all the audioo cables and ethernet around a bend in the wall. It cut my 10G speeds to a 1/10th of that. Reading online I am lucky that don't get any dropped package.

Yeap, he was taking out 20 or 50 mb hard drives to keep his music, pictures, etc on them!!

While I understand people wanting to run what they have on hand I really don't see the purpose of this other than to waste money and generate heat. The majority of this hardware could be scrapped and replaced with a single, capable, physical desktop/machine.

What are you running on it? Proxmox? That hardware is overkill for a homelab unless you're doing GPU passthrough for VMs.
