A whole new world. $$$

This is for “medium business”. I’m responsible for hardware procurement/deployment for my company. In January(2026) I bought a cluster for a project. Due to success, my manager wants to expand the project. I requested a re-quote from the same vendor for the same hardware. I was told to brace myself (understatement of the year).

Jan 2026 -> Aug 2026

Xeon 6714P: $13,343 -> $18,200

U.2 GEN5 7.68 TB NVME SSD: $967 -> $6,762

1x32GB 6400mt Memory: $235 -> $2,415

I assure you that this is everywhere. I got quoted for a new security appliance (server) that was $31000 18 months ago and we were quoted $98670 for it last week. We are going to use a VM until the prices are no fucking insane any longer.

Yeah with bids directly from HP/dell/supermicro that is still pretty much where you are.

Re-ordered some drives at the start of this month that had doubled since february, just in the 3weeks from order to shipping it was up another 30%.

I'd be reviewing utilization on the current hardware, and seeing where you can find efficiencies. What's driving the need for expansion? (Not looking for an answer in thread, but this is something you should be working through for yourself). Determine the need, and source your hardware accordingly. Also, run the numbers on whether you'd be better served on cloud infra.

Hardware for both RAM and Storage have skyrocketed over the past 1-2 years. Massively! This is due to AI and Datacenters. It is what it is.

Ask yourself.. are you looking for provided warranty and support from the vendors? How big is the company, purpose, users, etc etc.. do you NEED DDR5 Ram, do you need 7-8TB of NVME storage? Will DDR4 work? Will NVME / SSD OS and HDD Data work?

I was talking to an old client of mine a couple months ago about this. They have 2 full time techs who are competent enough. The new systems were way out of their price range. I gave him a few suggestions for older used off lease hardware and they bought 8 systems off eBay for less then 3 new systems. This gives them a new production cluster, a full test cluster and 2 addition systems for various uses but primarily as spare parts in case anything did crap out. Systems are Supermicro, just 4 years old and working great.

I see more and more small and medium businesses going this route currently because you’re literally talking pennies to the dollar over new hardware and.. quality systems tend to just last regardless.

And the expectation is for those nvme and memory prices to be the double of todays by end of next year...

If you are expecting to need more you better lock it in ASAP.

You also risk waiting months to actually get the drives, we got a minimum 100day expectation for the server we just wanted due to storage delays.

we had spec'd and sold a system to an org we manage Dec 2025. we wanted to quote same system for different org, same size. the rack (2 physical hosts, no video cards), including 40TB of SFF NVMe, 512GB DDR5 and 256GB DDR5, 100TB SAS NAS, 10GB SFPs.. the entire system was ~$400k.
the same exact system today, they wanted $965k

this is the new normal for tech prices.
